(Reuters) - British sandwich and coffee shop chain Pret A Manger is nearing a deal to buy smaller rival Eat, in a push to ramp up its offerings for vegetarian and vegan consumers, Evening Standard reported citing sources. Pret a Manger is closing in on a deal to gobble up smaller rival Eat as the sandwiches chain ramps up its efforts to sell more food to vegetarians and vegans, the Standard has learned. Talks between the two chains are understood to be at an advanced stage, with Pret in line to buy the majority of Eat’s 94 shops or the whole business. Sources close to Pret said it wants to turn Eat sites into Veggie Prets, as health-conscious shoppers are increasingly swapping meat for plant-based meals. Pret already has four Veggie Prets, three in London and one in Manchester. Eat has been struggling in recent years and in February its private-equity owner Horizon Capital appointed Spayne Lindsay, a corporate advisory firm, to offload the business.
