JAKARTA (The Jakarta Post/Asia News Network): Indonesia's oldest party Golkar has formed a coalition with two smaller parties, in a move that analysts view as endorsing its party chief as a presidential candidate and opening up a chance of having more than two presidential hopefuls in the 2024 election unlike the last two polls. The alliance with National Mandate Party (PAN) and United Development Party (PPP), named "United Indonesia Coalition", seeks to "end the use of political identities polarising Indonesian voters" as seen in the 2014 and 2019 elections, which Golkar top executive Ace Hasan Syadzily described as "causing a deep trauma" within the society after the polls. "We want the general election to become a contest of ideas, thoughts, track records and achievements, an opportunity to prove to each other which one is the best," he said last Friday (May 13). The ratings of Golkar chief Airlangga Hartarto, 59, who is coordinating minister for economic affairs, have been … [Read more...] about Indonesia’s Golkar forms coalition to endorse chief as presidential candidate

Doubts due to fast poll results transmission? PPCRV chair says it was faster in 2019
MANILA, Philippines — The Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) dispelled doubts with the fast inflow of votes in the quick count of the 2022 national election results by reminding the public that transmission in the 2019 midterm polls was actually faster. PPCRV chairperson Myla Villanueva said in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel’s Headstart on Monday that the big story in 2019 was the seven-hour glitch which delayed the partial quick count being done by the citizen’s arm. But this was actually even faster than the 2022 polls — data of which, she said, were opened to students and universities to ensure transparency and increase credibility who all agreed that there was nothing unusual. “To put it in perspective, maybe in 2019 the big story was the seven-hour glitch. But in reality data was coming in, we just weren’t seeing it in our servers while the other servers were seeing it. To be exact, the rate of the transmissions of 2019 were actually faster than … [Read more...] about Doubts due to fast poll results transmission? PPCRV chair says it was faster in 2019
Global challenges for 2022
Nam Jeong-ho The author is a columnist of the JoongAng Ilbo. A 21st century event as powerful as the inventions of letters, the wheel or steam engine — or as devastating as a world war — could be the breaking out of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Its spread transformed the centuries-old practice of reporting to work into working from home. The international order is not free from the cataclysmic shift. As we move into the third year of the pandemic, let’s take a look at global challenges ahead. Most noticeable is the retreat of globalization and the shutting down of borders, which wreaked havoc on international exchanges and multinational enterprises. Globalization on the political, economic and cultural fronts suddenly came to a halt. The biggest victim of the pandemic was the tourism industry, which saw the number of global tourists drop to 381 million in 2020 from 1.46 billion in 2019. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) estimates the resulting losses … [Read more...] about Global challenges for 2022

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline A Fox Entertainment executive said Monday the network has “no regrets” over casting former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who served as former President Trump’s attorney, on the reality show, despite an onstage protest by a couple of the judges on the show and low ratings for his appearance. Key Facts Rob Wade, president of alternative entertainment and specials, said the casting of Giuliani delivered a “jaw-dropping moment.” Wade said his only regret was that the surprise reveal, which aired last month, was spoiled by the media months ahead. Giuliani’s episode was one of the lowest-rated shows for The Masked Singer this season, according to Variety .
