Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin What follows is a grim and depressing equation. Math has never felt so bleak. Buckle up folks, this one’s a doozy. It’s been a little while since a new A Song Of Ice And Fire book has hit shelves. A Dance With Dragons came out on July 12th, 2011—the day my now 12-year-old son turned one year old. I had just turned 30. I will turn 42 this coming June. The world has changed enormously since we were left with all those cliffhangers at the end of the fifth book of the series—which ended at the same chronological time as the fourth book, A Feast Of Crows, which came out in 2005. This means that the story itself has not moved on since 2005, before I even had children, when I was closer to Theon Greyjoy’s age than Ned Stark’s. Stark, I should point out, was 34 in A Game Of Thrones. When I read that book I was around 20—now I’m eight years older than the Lord of Winterfell. I jot these details down out of … [Read more...] about Here’s When ‘Winds Of Winter’ Is Coming Out According To Math

From France To The U.S.: Pension Reforms And The Retirement Age Debate
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin French President Emmanuel Macron took a bold step last Friday by raising the legal retirement age in his country from 62 to 64, bypassing parliament and potentially setting his government up for a vote of no confidence. The unpopular pension reform, Macron says, is necessary to address the financial deficits caused by pandemic spending and the European energy crisis. With the U.S. watching closely, could France’s pension reform serve as a blueprint for future changes to Social Security? I don’t envy Macron for making this tough call. The people of France enjoy one of the most generous pension systems in the European Union (EU). According to 2020 data, France spent a jaw-dropping 14.7% of its GDP on pensions alone. However, the sustainability of this pension system is being threatened by demographic changes. The Western European country has one of the highest life expectancies in the world, and the expected years in … [Read more...] about From France To The U.S.: Pension Reforms And The Retirement Age Debate
Why Michael Porter Jr Should Take More Interior Shots
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Michael Porter Jr has played in 55 games this year so far, which has to be considered a win in its own right considering the persistent back issues he's had dating back to his college days. The 24-year-old is one of the league's best long-range shooters, and a crucial part of Denver's offense, which is built around the playmaking of Nikola Jokić. Porter Jr is currently hitting 41.5% of his 7.1 nightly three-point attempts, his third season of hitting above 40% from the outside of his career. But while the 6'10 forward is a nightmare matchup for defenders on the outside, his inclination to take perimeter shots can make him predictable. The good news? There's justification for trying Porter Jr closer to the basket as well. Over his career, he's hit an astounding 79% of his attempts from within three feet, and is sporting an 80.3% accuracy rate this season. It stands to reason that shot should take up more than 16.5% of … [Read more...] about Why Michael Porter Jr Should Take More Interior Shots
Why It’s Gold For The Win – And How You Can Profit
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Gold prices are closing in on an all-time high above $2,000 an ounce. This pair of MoneyShow contributors weighs in on what’s behind the move – and how investors can profit! Sean Brodrick , Weiss Ratings Daily The banking problems started by Silicon Valley Bank are far from over. Depositors are still fleeing smaller banks, figuring they might be facing the same problems as the banks that failed. The ongoing crisis supports gold. One reason is because gold is a safe haven. But it’s also due to another reason … it’s now harder for the Federal Reserve to raise rates! In a week, there has been a huge shift in Wall Street’s bets on the Fed raising rates. Goldman Sachs (GS) expects there to be no rate hike at all. Global financial services group Nomura Holdings (NMR) boldly expects the Fed to CUT at its March 21-22 meeting — something that did not seem possible last week. Even if the Fed hikes … [Read more...] about Why It’s Gold For The Win – And How You Can Profit

Space Junk Will Make Astronomy More Difficult And More Expensive, Says New Report
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Satellites and space junk are brightening the night sky and making it harder for astronomical observatories to make scientific discoveries, says a new report published today in the journal Nature Astronomy . Since 2019, the number of functional satellites in orbit has more than doubled, according to the authors, who fear that an uptick in collisions between space junk and the extra debris they generate could mean that important astronomical discoveries are “lost in the noise” in the coming decade. The paper calculates the effects of satellites and space debris in low Earth orbit (LEO) on major ground-based astronomy research facilities. It finds that reflected light from objects in LEO may add an extra $22 million to the cost of a flagship night sky survey. The number of satellites in orbit is expected to increase from 9,000 today to over 60,000 by 2030 while estimates suggest there are already more than 100 … [Read more...] about Space Junk Will Make Astronomy More Difficult And More Expensive, Says New Report

Animoca’s Yat Siu Says Crypto Is Becoming A ‘Safety Net’ Amid Banking Crisis
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Yat Siu, chairman of Asia’s largest blockchain investor Animoca Brands , thinks volatile cryptocurrencies are a relatively safe investment as the traditional financial world is rocked by the Credit Suisse turmoil and the failure of a string of U.S. banks. “If you take a look what happened recently with the whole development with Silicon Valley Bank, which was obviously shocking, and with Credit Suisse being taken over by UBS…actually the narrative was played out quite differently for crypto,” Siu said via a video link on Monday at the Web3 Investment Summit in Hong Kong. “It started to actually bifurcate as some people had predicted, which is that sort of future, let’s say, safety net.” To be sure, cryptocurrencies are risky investments. The largely unregulated market saw roughly 60% of its value evaporate from its peak in November 2021, according to CoinGecko as of Monday. It comes after a series of corporate … [Read more...] about Animoca’s Yat Siu Says Crypto Is Becoming A ‘Safety Net’ Amid Banking Crisis
