October 27, 2020 by thethaiger.com

PHOTO: AFP / The Asean Post As anti-government sentiment among Thailand’s student population shows no sign of abating, the Education Ministry says it plans to overhaul the Basic Education Core Curriculum to provide students with a better understanding of political developments in the Kingdom between 1932 and 1957. Supat Chumpathong says the new curriculum will also place more of a focus on analytical thinking, instead of learning by rote. The Thai education system has come in for criticism in some quarters for not fostering critical thinking among students. University academics are being drafted in to help with the revamp, with a draft expected to be submitted to the Education ministry by mid-December, in the hope it can be implemented in the 2022 academic year. Supat says the social studies curriculum will be updated to consist of information currently not included. The married couple are cofounders of several organizations: The National Center for Urban Solutions , The National African American Male Wellness Agency , Academy for Urban Scholars , and NCUS TEC . A Revolutionary Move For A Better Future

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Harvard economist Raj Chetty is doing something remarkable, and it ought to be a model for how the government and the private sector can improve the lives of American citizens. His approach isn't political. It’s pragmatic . Even more admirable: he’s willing to face irksome facts about how inequality of opportunity is almost physically rooted in neighborhoods . It’s all about zip codes. You are who you are, economically and educationally, to a great degree because of where you live . Once you land in a zip code, it will launch you into new opportunities, or it will limit you. Where you’re going depends more than we want to admit on where you are right now. Chetty is the William A. Ackman Professor of Economics at Harvard. He focuses on economic inequality and social mobility: the ability of each generation of a family to enjoy a quality of life better than the previous one. Multiple studies have found that the U.S. is … [Read more...] about A Revolutionary Move For A Better Future

A Beginner’s Mind: Ocasio-Cortez’s Key To Cracking A Political Victory

June 28, 2018 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, in the expert's mind there are few,” writes Shunryu Suzuki in Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind . This idea is anathema to most politicians, for whom the very idea that a 28-year-old woman from a minority with no political experience could beat out a well-funded, high-ranking politician with legitimate aspirations to become Speaker of the House was outrageous. Until this past Tuesday, that is. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beat out the Democratic incumbent Joseph Crowley in a defeat few saw coming. As the 28-year-old challenger who was outspent 18-1, she enjoyed a crushing victory over the long-time incumbent who was twice her age, with 57% of the vote. In a sense, age was also a real protagonist in this election. Ocasio-Cortez demonstrated that age does not have to define — or limit rather — what you can accomplish. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the winner of a … [Read more...] about A Beginner’s Mind: Ocasio-Cortez’s Key To Cracking A Political Victory

How To Navigate The Flawed Job Market

August 8, 2018 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Day 3: Get to know the job market. This post is part of Forbes’ Career Challenge: Get Job-Search Ready In 15 Days . In 1987, Sallie Krawcheck secured a coveted job in investment banking on Wall Street. Shortly after she started, the 1987 crash followed. She found herself in a job she hated, in a cut-throat work culture she hated and in a time of crisis that exacerbated the problem. “I knew I didn't like investment banking. I didn't get it. I didn't enjoy it. I didn't love the work,” she said in an interview with Business Insider. In 1990, realizing this wasn’t the career she wanted, she started at Columbia Business School. Her goal in business school was to get out of financial services and switch to the media industry. According to plan, she landed a summer internship at Time, Inc. She was thrilled and excited at the prospect of working there full-time once the internship converted into a job. At the end of the … [Read more...] about How To Navigate The Flawed Job Market

Dying For The Perfect Photo Or Video – Is Social Media Claiming Lives?

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Twenty-seven-year-old Edgar Garay was killed after he fell from a cliff in Puerto Rico last Sunday while attempting to film a social media video for TikTok. He is sadly among the latest person to be killed while trying to stage a perfect photo or video. A 2018 study conducted by Indian researchers from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences found that 259 people had died between 2011 and 2017 while trying to take "extreme selfies" with their phones. These have included falls from the tops of mountains, cliff sides, and even tall buildings; while others have been swept away by water currents, and more than a few were killed by wild animals. In one case, a pair of Russian soldiers had posed with a live grenade that suddenly went off, while a teenage Romanian girl tried to take an "ultimate selfie" from the top of a moving train only to come in contact with a live wire. It is also a global phenomenon – with … [Read more...] about Dying For The Perfect Photo Or Video – Is Social Media Claiming Lives?

Haze Pollution Forces School Closures in Bangkok

February 4, 2023 by thethaiger.com

Bangkok pollution, photo by Bangkok Post. Haze pollution is devastating Thailand’s capital city of Bangkok , and forced several schools to close yesterday. Schools such as Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Secondary School and Jindabamrung School temporarily closed their doors due to the respiratory impact on students and announced reopening on Monday. The Education Ministry has established coordination centres to monitor the PM2.5 situation and schools can exercise discretion in their decisions to close if the dust levels are deemed unsafe. The Public Health Ministry reported that over 370,000 patients have suffered from illnesses due to inhaling ultra-fine dust particles (PM2.5), Bangkok Post reported. On Friday, 43 provinces including Bangkok and its suburbs remained blanketed in smog, with PM2.5 dust levels above the government’s safe limit of 50 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m³), according to the Pollution Control Department (PCD). Black History, DEI, And Becoming A True Ally

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As we observe Black History Month, it’s a good time for businesses and individuals to reassess just how well they are living up to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace and to explore how they can improve. Studying history is one way to do that, even if the connection to DEI might seem at first glance tangential to what’s happening in your offices and conference rooms today. But really, when you think about it, it’s not that difficult to make the connection. The lessons we learn from history – or don’t learn because we are never taught them – affect us in many ways, sometimes including how others in the workplace see us. Just recently on my vlog , “Intentional Conversations,” I discussed this very subject with Emmanuel Kulu Jr., an author of historical fiction and founder of the Ancient African Antiquities Research Institute of America. Kulu made the point that when a … [Read more...] about Black History, DEI, And Becoming A True Ally
