UK’s CMA extends investigation on Microsoft and Activision Blizzard deal
(Image Courtesy: Reuters) United Kingdom's Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) has extended its timeline for the investigation of Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The CMA said that it would now publish its findings from phase two of the investigation on April 26, 2023. The previous deadline was March 1, 2023. According to GamesIndustry.biz, the watchdog said that despite the new date, it aims to complete its report, "as soon as possible and in advance of this date." The reason given for the delay was the complexity of the investigation which would require parsing through a, "large volume of evidence, as well as main party and third party submissions." In December of last year, The CMA held hearings with the companies involved, as well as going through requests and submissions from both parties. This process is expected to continue in January. The CMA plans to wrap up the hearings by the middle of February, and the final deadline for … [Read more...] about UK’s CMA extends investigation on Microsoft and Activision Blizzard deal
Virgin Orbit Shares Slide as First UK Space Launch Fails
Virgin Orbit ( VORB ) shares slumped 12% Monday after the California company spun off by Richard Branson's Virgin Group aborted its first space launch from U.K. soil, citing a booster rocket malfunction. Key Takeaways The first space launch from U.K. soil failed late Sunday when Virgin Orbit's rocket malfunctioned. The California company's shares plunged 12% in Monday's trading. Virgin Orbit had already flagged doubts it can remain a going concern amid heavy financial losses. The mission's failure was also a setback for the U.K., which invested $24 billion to turn a Cornwall airport into a base for the Boeing jet used by Virgin Orbit to launch its rockets. Virgin Orbit began as a project within Branson's Virgin Galactic ( SPCE ) and, like the space tourism company, launches its space vehicle from a carrier jet plane flying at a high altitude. Virgin Orbit's 'Cosmic Girl' Boeing 747, adapted from passenger service for Virgin Atlantic, took off from Cornwall … [Read more...] about Virgin Orbit Shares Slide as First UK Space Launch Fails
Part-Time Work Is Key To Boosting Economic Growth And Employment, U.K. Research Shows
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin De-stigmatizing and expanding the availability of part-time work could support national employment, economic growth and worker engagement, according to new research published in the U.K. this week. Using data derived from the country’s flexible furlough program during the pandemic, under which organizations were able to bring back employees on a part-time basis with the government subsidizing their wages, academics at Cranfield University’s School of Management found that if companies were to offer more part-time work, the broader economy could be much better off. About a fifth of working age people in the U.K. are currently classed as economically inactive, the research found. Many of those are not employed because they have caring responsibilities, a disability or another health condition or concern. But having access to part-time work could a the two-pronged benefit: it would allow those individuals to re-enter the … [Read more...] about Part-Time Work Is Key To Boosting Economic Growth And Employment, U.K. Research Shows
Study Mathematics Until Aged 18? Let’s Start With Soft Skills
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In his first speech of 2023, the UK’s Prime Minister announced a new plan to better equip young people to enter the workforce: get them to study mathematics up until the age of 18. Rishi Sunak said: “In a world where data is everywhere and statistics underpin every job, our children’s jobs will require more analytical skills than ever before. “And letting our children out into the world without those skills is letting our children down.” The workplace does have a skills problem. Only a fifth of UK employers believe graduates enter into the world of work equipped with the right skills, one survey by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) found. And graduates are inclined to agree: a 2022 report by Cengage Group found that, among traditional degree graduates, just 41% believe a college degree signals they have, or will have, the skills needed by their employers. Sunak’s solution, then, sounds sensible. … [Read more...] about Study Mathematics Until Aged 18? Let’s Start With Soft Skills
Hyperscaler Shaker, Civo’s Lighter Touch To Heavyweight Clouds
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Clouds are heavy - both kinds. Like their meteorological equivalents, cloud computing clouds carry a great weight of water (data), internal weather system complexity (network-layer connectivity) and massive potential to exert kinetic strength and energy (big data analytics, machine learning functions for AI, real-time processing and so much more). While we could run on and on with the analogies here, the overriding sentiment that appears to be emanating from the cloud computing industry right now relates to the complexity of cloud orchestration and management. Clouds (the ones above us and the computing kind) are very often a maelstrom of forces that we fail to harness as competently as we should, especially when we are paying for them. On something of a mission to shake up the cloud computing firmament currently established by the big three Cloud Service Provider (CSP) hyperscalers is UK and US-headquartered Civo. The … [Read more...] about Hyperscaler Shaker, Civo’s Lighter Touch To Heavyweight Clouds
Horizon: Priming ‘Plan B’
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The UK scientific community is preparing itself for the brave new world that is life outside of the EU’s flagship R&D programme Horizon. With limited progress made between Britain and the EU on the Northern Ireland protocol – widely considered the first political hurdle on the road back into Horizon – the narrative has begun to shift to ‘Plan B’ and in what terms Britain will define itself as a science superpower in the future. The early signs of what that might look like were apparent in the content of George Freeman’s speech to the centre-right think tank Onward earlier this month where he summarised the outlook of British science post-Brexit. While the UK science minister was keen to stress the importance of bilateral projects with the likes of Switzerland, Japan and Israel, the speech outlined the need for realism and a recalibration of the specific research challenges that the UK can lead on internationally without … [Read more...] about Horizon: Priming ‘Plan B’
Now, Google and Nvidia have problems with Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision
Representative Image After Sony, tech giant Google and chipmaker Nvidia have "expressed concerns" to the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over Microsoft's proposed $69-billion acquisition of Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard. According to a Bloomberg report, Google and Nvidia have told FTC that Microsoft would gain an unfair advantage in mobile, subscription and cloud services if the merger goes through. Sources told Bloomberg that while Google objected to the deal, Nvidia stopped short of expressing opposition and stressed the importance of equal access to games for all services. Nvidia's GeForce Now streaming service for games competes with cloud offerings from Microsoft and as the publication Eurogamer points out Microsoft was one of the companies that protested Nvidia's acquisition of ARM, which eventually fell through . Google will shut down its game streaming service Stadia on January 18 but it still competes with Microsoft on online … [Read more...] about Now, Google and Nvidia have problems with Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision
Why Teams Should Eat Together If They Want To Bond
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Feeling like we belong at work is something many of us crave, yet most of us lack. Indeed, 40% of employees state that they often feel isolated at work, which results not only in lower engagement levels but also less commitment to the organization. A few years ago the Guardian asked readers to write in with their tales of isolation at work, and several hundred did so, with many lamenting the lack of any real sense of belonging at work. It's a problem encapsulated by data from the people experience company BetterUp, which shows how our sense of belonging is closely linked to the social connections we have at work, with our sense of identification, and that we, and our work, matter. There is a clear desire to feel accepted and included by those we work with. Eating together In The Social Brain , Robin Dunbar outlines how food has historically played a crucial role in this bonding process. While food in many … [Read more...] about Why Teams Should Eat Together If They Want To Bond
13 Million Passwords Appear To Have Leaked From This Free Web Host – UPDATED
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Type in “free web hosting” into Google and a variety of options are presented. Near the top is a Lithuanian company called 000Webhost. Its high Google ranking could well be the reason it is believed to have millions of users. Unfortunately for them, all their usernames and passwords have been leaked, FORBES understands. Earlier this week, I was contacted by Troy Hunt, Microsoft MVP and owner of haveibeenpwned.com , a website that sucks in email addresses from significant breaches so users can quickly check whether their data was compromised. Hunt informed me he’d been contacted by an anonymous source who’d passed along a database allegedly belonging to 000Webhost, containing usernames and passwords ostensibly belonging to just more than 13.5 million users. They didn't appear to have been leaked online before and the database looked legitimate, piquing Hunt's interest. Hunt and I subsequently tested various emails in … [Read more...] about 13 Million Passwords Appear To Have Leaked From This Free Web Host – UPDATED
