Gun buybacks take weapons out of circulation, but experts say there’s no evidence the programs reduce violence
(CNN) Chicago officials launched a fundraising campaign to support the city's largest ever gun buyback program, with the goal of raising $1 million to entice people to turn in guns during two large events this year. Mayor Lori Lightfoot called it a "bold new initiative" and said it would get "guns out of the hands of dangerous people." Chicago and other cities have been running these programs for decades, often trading gift cards of $100 or so for guns and some lesser amount for replica guns. Gun violence keeps supercharging America's Second Amendment debate Chicago officials annually take in hundreds of guns through buyback programs . But decades of research shows such programs don't reduce gun violence, in large part because they don't result in guns being taken from people who aren't supposed to have them. One recent study found "no evidence that (gun buyback programs) reduce suicides or homicides where a firearm was involved." These types of … [Read more...] about Gun buybacks take weapons out of circulation, but experts say there’s no evidence the programs reduce violence
Law enforcement focus on quality-of-life offenses renews old debate over ‘broken windows’ policing
(CNN) The New York Police Department is cracking down on offenses that have become part of daily life in some neighborhoods: public consumption of alcohol, open-air marijuana sales and public urination. The goal is to combat relatively minor infractions that the nation's largest police department maintains lower the quality of life and foment the type of disorder that resulted in 30 shootings last weekend and Monday -- including a 7-year-old girl wounded in gang crossfire. In Detroit, the city's newly released plan to reduce violent crime over the summer refers to the association between "urban blight" and gun violence and vows greater enforcement of noise complaints and traffic offenses and keeping a close eye on vacant lots and buildings. In Miami Beach, city officials responded to what they say are "excessively large and unruly spring break crowds" by declaring a state of emergency and imposing a midnight to 6 a.m. curfew through Monday. Nationwide police crackdown on student gang violence
The Royal Thai Police say they are cracking down on student gangs. They say they will be enforcing existing laws and focussing on problem cells. They will also prosecute parents for the behaviour of their children. Thai Rath reports that Pol Lt-Gen Phromthorn Phak-at from Royal Thai Police says that the police will be taking a “no nonsense” approach to student violence as the school term starts across the country at government and private schools. He said the police had a plan. They had collected data about problem students and problem areas. “If there is any trouble we will come down on warring students with the full force of the law.” Police say this is necessary to protect Thai society and law abiding citizens who get caught up in violence between school gangs. Stewart Copeland On ‘The Police: Around The World’ Documentary, Now Re-Released Decades Later
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin By 1980, the British rock trio the Police had already established themselves as a successful group in the U.K. and U.S. with such hits songs as “Roxanne,” “Can't Stand Losing You,” “Message in a Bottle” and “Walking on the Moon.” In that particular year, the band members—drummer Stewart Copeland, guitarist Andy Summers and bassist/singer Sting—were on their first and most ambitious international tour that saw them make stops in Mexico, Egypt, Japan, Australia, Greece, Hong Kong and India. It’s a memory that still lingers in Copeland's mind over four decades after the fact. “That tour was probably the most fun tour of the whole [Police] adventure,” he says. “We were the first rock band in Greece and Bombay. These were really not markets—they were just extremely exotic places where bands did not tour. But we did, and it was darn photogenic.” Footage from that tour was filmed and later released in 1982 as The Police: … [Read more...] about Stewart Copeland On ‘The Police: Around The World’ Documentary, Now Re-Released Decades Later
