Jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny appeared before the hearing at a Moscow court via video link from his prison colony MOSCOW - Jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny on Tuesday lost his legal appeal against a nine-year prison sentence that he and his allies condemn as politically motivated. His sentencing came as Moscow pushes on with its military offensive in neighbouring Ukraine and Russian authorities seek to silence remaining government critics. A Moscow court ruled to "leave the sentence without changes" and for it to enter into force immediately, meaning that the leader of Russia's embattled opposition will be transferred to a strict-regime penal colony with harsh conditions, including few family visits. President Vladimir Putin's arch-critic appeared before the court via video-link from behind bars at his prison colony outside Moscow. Wearing a black prisoner uniform, the 45-year-old looked grim and listened attentively, leaning against his bars, as the judge read … [Read more...] about Kremlin critic Navalny loses appeal against nine-year sentence

May 23, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Last week, a U.K. court awarded damages amounting to £50,000 to the parents of a 20-year-old student who tragically took her own life after her university was adjudged to have discriminated against her disability by failing to make reasonable accommodations to the way it undertook academic assessments. Chronically shy and suffering from debilitating anxiety, Natasha Abrahart, a physics student at the University of Bristol, was found dead in her flat in April 2018. The next day, the young woman who was petrified of public speaking and so shy that, on rare nights out, she would often rely on friends to order food and drinks for her, had been due to participate in a group presentation to staff and students in a 329-seat lecture hall. In his ruling, Judge Alex Ralton criticized the university for failing to provide Natasha with an alternative means of relaying the results of her experiments stating that it was “obvious … [Read more...] about Why Social Anxiety Remains A Deadly Silent Killer For Vulnerable Young People

May 23, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

A judge Monday sentenced a 49-year-old Greeley man to 120 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections for 16 drug charges related to his involvement in a large-scale and long-running drug trafficking organization. Luke Braziel, 49, appeared in person Monday afternoon with defense attorney Stephanie Stout for a sentencing hearing before Weld Judge Julie Hoskins. Braziel’s case dates back to 2019 when the Weld County Drug Task Force started an investigation into a major drug trafficking organization operating in Weld County. The investigation led to the arrest of multiple people. Braziel — who has a criminal history relating to drugs dating back to 1998 — and other members of his organization distributed a total of 28 pounds of crystal methamphetamine and heroin into the county, according to Greeley police. The task force learned that Braziel distributed drugs from his residence in the 1800 block of 7th Avenue in Greeley. Prosecutors from the Weld County District … [Read more...] about Greeley man gets 120 years in prison for 16 charges related to drug trafficking organization
