- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 27): Costlier crude oil along with a stronger US dollar will erode Spritzer's Bhd profit margin, the bottled water producer admitted. "Costlier oil will translate into costlier PET resin, which is the main raw material used in making the [plastic] bottles. "PET resin is normally quoted in US dollar so a stronger US dollar would mean we will have to pay more for our PET resin," a company representative said in a brief email reply to theedgemarkets.com recently, when asked about the impact of surging oil prices on its manufacturing costs. According to the US-based PET Resin Association, PET — which is short for polyethylene terephthalate, the chemical name for polyester — is a clear, strong, and lightweight plastic made from crude oil and ethane extracted from natural gas that is widely used for packaging food and beverages, especially convenience-sized soft drinks, juices and water. Following Russia's incursion into Ukraine, oil prices … [Read more...] about Spritzer admits costlier crude oil, stronger US dollar will erode its profit margin

I spent six weeks living in A24-world. Here’s what happened
What makes A24 a cultural powerhouse is not that it released a film last spring in which an inter-dimensional assassin impales himself on an Auditor of the Month trophy, inexplicably shaped like a certain sex toy, although it most certainly did. It’s not that most cinephiles would immediately guess A24 as the company who put out that film, Everything Everywhere All at Once , even if its logo didn’t appear before the credits, although they probably would. No, what makes A24 a steady, sturdy phenomenon is that it started selling $60 designer candle replicas of that unlikely trophy just after the movie’s early-June digital release. advertisement advertisement Whether enough fans purchase the item—a collaboration with Brooklyn-based design studio, Joya —to justify its overhead cost is incidental. Everything Everywhere is now A24’s biggest hit ever , its $89 million box-office haul rendering the digital release a victory lap. The very existence … [Read more...] about I spent six weeks living in A24-world. Here’s what happened

Over 400,000 Umbrellas Sold At Costco Recalled Due To Fire Risk
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Umbrellas don’t tend to work as well when they are on fire. That’s why SunVilla Corporation is recalling its 10’ Solar LED Market Umbrellas that have been sold exclusively at Costco. According to U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) , there have been reports of such umbrellas being on fire, but not in a positive, “you’re on fire” type of way. Instead, this has been the burst-into-flames-oh-my-goodness-why-is-the-umbrella-doing-that type of on fire. This recall reportedly encompasses around 400,000 of these umbrellas. They were manufactured in China, imported by SunVilla Corporation, which is based in Chino, California, and sold through Costco both online and at in-person stores from December 2020 through May 2022. Since approximately 33,000 of these umbrellas have been sold in Canada, Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) also issued the following tweet and notice: Why would an … [Read more...] about Over 400,000 Umbrellas Sold At Costco Recalled Due To Fire Risk
When in Rome, Drink Like A Roman
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Go off the beaten path and drink local with the locals Like all major European capitals, Rome’s touristy neighborhoods are hard to avoid or, sometimes, resist. After a journey of missed connections, jumbled travel directions and mangled language if you’re not an Italian speaker, it’s tempting to fall into a neighborhood like Trastevere, where English is widely spoken and familiar menu items can entice you to give in and settle for something comfortable. But, don’t. If you want to eat and drink like a Roman, get off the beaten track. Just across the river, the adjoining historically working-class neighborhoods of Testaccio and Ostiense have bloomed in the past decade, becoming destinations for more authentic eating and drinking. They’re no secret to the well-traveled set or frequent visitors to Rome, but you’ll see few fanny-packers, selfie sticks and white sneakers here. Take the subway ( Metropolitana ) to the … [Read more...] about When in Rome, Drink Like A Roman
Behind The Scenes: Nhow London Brings An Eclectic Take On The City
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A riot of colours, irreverent nods towards the royal family and rainbow-hued hotel-room doors (inspired by Notting Hill’s houses) – nhow London harnesses all the joy and quirks of British culture. A short walk from Angel or Old Street tube stations, the hotel is found on the fringes of Shoreditch. Entering the lobby space from the urban sprawl is like peering into a kaleidoscope. The open-plan space has a warehouse feel, with its vast space and high ceilings. It is filled with mismatched groups of chairs and sofas, covered in House of Hackney fabrics, graphic printed rugs and oversized pop art adorning the walls. At its heart is a neon yellow bar, ideal for late-night cocktails, which merges into the all-day eaterie. The design by interior architects Project Orange has fun and optimism at its heart. Having opened just before the pandemic, its ‘reinvention’ of the modern hotel offers a ‘hyper-real’ vibe which feels … [Read more...] about Behind The Scenes: Nhow London Brings An Eclectic Take On The City

How to Learn to Be Optimistic Again
It's a hard time to stay optimistic . Between the pandemic, the recession, and the protests, both business and life are uncertain and challenging. But while it might be difficult to stay positive, decades of psychological research illustrate why it's essential. University of Pennsylvania psychologist Martin Seligman became a towering figure in the field of positive psychology in part because of his pioneering work making dogs depressed. In the landmark studies, Seligman subjected dogs to mild electric shocks without giving them any way to escape the discomfort. He found that even if he later offered the unhappy animals an easy way to escape, they just sat there. They had learned helplessness. Essentially they got depressed. If that sounds uncomfortably close to how 2020 is making you feel sometimes, the good news is that Seligman also found humans are different from dogs. While all dogs would sit there and take the shocks, a subset of people are able to fight back and … [Read more...] about How to Learn to Be Optimistic Again
How To Connect With Your Audience: What Business Leaders Can Learn From Poetry
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For many people, poetry brings back the memory of being in seventh grade English when they were taught to try to solve the riddle of a poem: the meaning was hidden within the strange and complex syntax of a poem and you had to figure it out in order to get an A on the test. Poetry may still feel like a secret code that’s tough to break, but contemporary poets will tell you that what you learned in your English class was the wrong approach. Poetry was never meant to be a riddle, but an experience. An experience that cuts through the noise and gets to the heart of the matter. Poetry moves and connects people with few words, distilled imagery, and thoughtful language. Poet Audre Lorde famously defended the utility of poetry as the first step in changing the status quo, a goal of leaders from any sector. In order to create change, she argues, new ideas have to be formed in language before they can be put into action. … [Read more...] about How To Connect With Your Audience: What Business Leaders Can Learn From Poetry
Parrot Plumage Color May Be Linked To Body Size And Climate
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Spectacular plumage color like that seen in many parrot species is usually associated sexual selection, which raises the question: are parrots genuinely monogamous? Or are other factors influencing their dazzling colors? People love parrots, at least partly because of their often spectacular plumage colors. “The colors that parrots display are impressively beautiful and rare when compared with other birds”, said Luisana Carballo, who is the lead author of a recent study of parrot plumage color and a doctoral candidate at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology . In fact, parrots are one of the most colorful groups of birds, but the reasons for this are unclear. Is it because most parrot species nest in tree hollows, where they are safer from predators than if they nested in open cup nests or on the ground? Or perhaps it’s because parrots are the only birds that can synthesize their own red, orange and yellow … [Read more...] about Parrot Plumage Color May Be Linked To Body Size And Climate
