- A + A WASHINGTON (June 22): US President Joe Biden on Wednesday called on Congress to pass a three-month suspension of the federal gasoline tax to help combat record pump prices and provide temporary relief for American families this summer. "We can bring down the price of gas and give families just a little bit of relief," Biden said in a White House address. The president also urged States to temporarily suspend State fuel taxes, which are often higher than federal rates, the official said, and will challenge major oil companies to bring ideas on how to bring back idled refining capacity when they meet with his energy secretary on Thursday. Biden and his advisers have been discussing the issue for months amid increasing pressure to act as record-high gas prices weigh down the president's poll ratings and cast a dark cloud over Democrats' chances of retaining congressional power in November's elections. Fortunately an inflation-busting option is ready to go – modeling shows electric vehicles save drivers thousands per year compared to internal combustion engines in most states. But these consumer-protection economics hinge upon the U.S. Senate passing legislation that has languished for months after passing the House of Representatives. Without those extremely valuable incentives, EVs and billions in annual savings will slip out of reach for many families. If the Senate passes reconciliation legislation extending the EV tax credit cap for automakers and increases the federal tax credit to $10,000, it will … [Read more...] about Americans Are Suffering Record Pain At The Pump. These renters were hit hardest by the pandemic and they’re still struggling
(CNN) Millions of people struggled to pay their rent during the pandemic. But that hardship fell disproportionately on renters of color, those living with children and people renting in the South, according to an exclusive new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. The number of renters that fell behind on rent peaked at 15 million in January 2021, the report showed. Since then, federal aid programs -- including billions of dollars in rent relief and an eviction moratorium -- plus a recovering economy, have reduced that number. But there remained 10.4 million renters who said they are not caught up on rent as of March, according to CBPP. By September 2020, 55% of all adult renters reported a loss of income due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but for Latino and Black renters the share was even higher, at 65% and 57% respectively. More leg room, less space to breathe: Meet the double-decker plane seat
Flying business class is passable. But for everyone else, the experience of flight is awful. Leisure travel has devolved into a Lord of the Flies battle for resources—the slightest recline of our seats, some fresh air to breathe through a mask—that turns passengers against each other in desperation. This hell is the natural consequence of air travel’s business plan to maximize bodies on a plane to offset high fuel costs; it’s a business plan that, horrendously, works . advertisement advertisement As radical as the idea may seem, Núñez Vicente actually isn’t the first to design a double-decker plane seat. In 2020, designer Jeffrey O’Neil proposed the Zephyr Seat , which reimagined seating as a series of bunk beds. But Núñez Vicente has struck a certain nerve of the internet, spawning thought pieces and memes with his vision for a remarkably snug seating arrangement. Meanwhile, he claims that representatives from every major airline have come … [Read more...] about More leg room, less space to breathe: Meet the double-decker plane seat
