Japan’s Naoya Inoue celebrates after winning against Philippines’ Nonito Donaire during their Bantamweight unification boxing match at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama on June 7, 2022. (Photo by Philip FONG / AFP) Japan’s Naoya Inoue wants to prove he is worthy of his status as boxing’s new pound-for-pound king, by becoming undisputed bantamweight world champion, the man known as “Monster” said Monday. The ferocious 29-year-old was named The Ring magazine’s new pound-for-pound number one last month after demolishing the great Filipino veteran Nonito Donaire inside two rounds to add the WBC bantamweight world title to his WBA and IBF belts. Inoue replaced Ukrainian heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk at the top of the pound-for-pound tree, and the Japanese fighter is keen to drive the point home by beating Britain’s WBO title-holder Paul Butler to become undisputed champion. “People were saying that me becoming the number one pound-for-pound fighter all depended on what happened in the … [Read more...] about Inoue says undisputed crown will prove I’m pound-for-pound boxing king

June 28, 2022 by globalnation.inquirer.net

U.S. President Joe Biden attends the G7 leaders’ summit at the Bavarian resort of Schloss Elmau castle, near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, June 27, 2022. REUTERS/Lukas Barth/Pool WASHINGTON — U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday signed a national security memorandum to fight illegal fishing, part of pledged efforts to help countries combat alleged violations by fishing fleets, including those of China. The White House said in a statement that it would also launch an alliance with Canada and the United Kingdom to “take urgent action” to improve monitoring, control, and surveillance in the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. U.S. officials have vowed to introduce policies to better battle illegal fishing, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, as part of stepped up engagement with the region to counter China’s growing influence. Some countries in the region chafe at China’s vast fishing fleet, arguing its vessels often violate their 200-nautical-mile … [Read more...] about Biden swipes at China with memo to combat illegal fishing

With AFF tilt looming, Filipinas continue ironing out game wrinkles

June 28, 2022 by sports.inquirer.net

Coach Alen Stajcic’s assessment of the Philippines’ gripping 2-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina late on Sunday (Philippine time) that capped a series of international friendlies in Brezice, Slovenia, was straight to the point. “We toiled hard, pressed well as a group and executed some nice goals,” he said. Katrina Guillou delivered the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory that featured the kind of fight the women’s national football team has shown since becoming the country’s first representative to the sport’s global showcase, the prestigious women’s World Cup. Trailing Bosnia and Herzegovina, 0-1, the Filipinas leaned on the late goals of Quinley Quezada and Guillou, which both came in the span of five minutes, to pull off the come-from-behind victory. Sara Eggesvik found Quezada, who converted the assist to equalize the match, 1-1, in the 85th minute. Before the final whistle, Guillou struck in the 90th minute as the national team escaped with its second straight win over … [Read more...] about With AFF tilt looming, Filipinas continue ironing out game wrinkles

CJ Perez (right) assembles a triple-double in San Miguel Beer’s Sunday rout of Converge. —PBA IMAGES Taking a huge lead against an undermanned squad at halftime, San Miguel Beer received an urgent message from its coaching staff. Step on the gas pedal. Don’t play to the level of your opponents. “The coaches told us to show our killer instinct so we could carry over [the momentum] over to the next game,” said CJ Perez late Sunday night after assembling a triple-double that propelled the Beermen to a 111-92 victory over Converge in the PBA Philippine Cup at Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo City. The Beermen flexed their might just days after absorbing a 75-72 defeat from Barangay Ginebra that temporarily knocked them off the tournament lead. They caught up with the Gin Kings with their fourth win in five games, where six players scored in double figures—a display of depth highlighted by the fact that San Miguel was without potent scorers Terrence Romeo, Vic Manuel and Chris … [Read more...] about San Miguel Beer shows off killer instinct in rout of Converge

As he steps down, Ramirez says he is ready for fresh term if needed

June 28, 2022 by sports.inquirer.net

FILE – PSC Chairman Butch Ramirez. Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.net Philippine Sports Commission Chair (PSC) William “Butch” Ramirez said on Monday that he is willing to go through another six years in his office if entrusted with the job by the incoming administration. “It’s really time to go,” Ramirez said as he led the PSC’s flag-raising ceremony one last time on Monday. “But without pretensions, if the [new] president and the executive secretary offer me the position to be retained, I’ll be honored to accept it.’’ Combining political and financial acuity with his affinity for athletes, Ramirez turned the PSC into one of the vital cogs that led to the Philippines ending its near-century gold medal drought in the Olympics via Hidilyn Diaz’s victory in Tokyo last year. He had a solid set of commissioners who performed their tasks mostly under the limelight: basketball legend Ramon Fernandez, Charles Maxey, Celia Kiram and Arnold Agustin. And he wants a shot at making sure … [Read more...] about As he steps down, Ramirez says he is ready for fresh term if needed
