- A + A KOTA KINABALU (June 29): The declaration of the Lahad Datu Palm Oil Industrial Cluster (POIC Lahad Datu) Port’s full operation as a public port can further boost Sabah’s industrial and economic development. Deputy chief minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the declaration of POIC Lahad Datu Port, in accordance with Section 3 Sabah Ports Authority Enactment 1981, is expected to attract more investors and have a significant impact on the industrial development of the east coast of the state. He said the declaration of POIC Lahad Datu Port as a public port would also further strengthen its capability to play an important role as a logistics hub in Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). “The POIC Lahad Datu Port was built in 2013 but can’t operate as a real port as no declaration has been made in accordance with the law,” he told reporters after the port’s official declaration ceremony here on Wednesday (June … [Read more...] about Declaration of POIC Lahad Datu port to boost Sabah’s economy, says Joachim

4 Challenges–and Triumphs–of LGBTQ+ Entrepreneurs in 2022
One of the reasons I'm so passionate about entrepreneurship is that it allows anyone to chart their own destiny. If you have a good idea and the willingness to pursue it, you're on your way to supporting yourself and adding value to our economy. Which is why, as my company gathered stories from LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs for Pride Month, I was happy to hear that the spirit of self-determination is alive and well. "Ever since I was a child, I've always wanted to be my own boss," says RJ Silver, owner of Sad Boy Designs. "The only thing that ever struck my interest was art, and I wanted to find the best way to display my talents. Today, I'm a graphic designer, and I create multiple things ranging from small keychains to large car decals." We need more, not less, of stories like this. That's one reason Hello Alice regularly surveys the more than 800,000 small business owners on our platform to understand their quantitative and qualitative experiences and advance targeted … [Read more...] about 4 Challenges–and Triumphs–of LGBTQ+ Entrepreneurs in 2022
Jamie Malonzo cleared to play for Gilas Pilipinas as a local
Jamie Malonzo. –PBA IMAGES MANILA, Philippines–NorthPort’s young two-way star Jamie Malonzo, it turns out, is eligible to backstop the national cage program as a local. The news was confirmed by no less than Gilas Pilipinas program director Chot Reyes on Wednesday night in a chat with reporters after TNT’s 117-112 victory over NorthPort at Smart Araneta Coliseum. “All this while, he’s eligible. It took just like anything in life, just for me to actually ask him,” he said. “[W]e went through the process of Fiba, and now he has been cleared and he is now part of the Fiba portal as a local player.” Apparently, Malonzo—who was born to a Filipino mother—was able to secure a Philippine passport at the age of 8. The global basketball body requires players to acquire a passport before the age of 16 in order to suit up for the national team. “Over the past few years, she’s been—probably a thousand times—‘Why are you not eligible?’ She was able to go back, and find the paperwork. … [Read more...] about Jamie Malonzo cleared to play for Gilas Pilipinas as a local
Telcos grab DNB stake ahead of 5G rollout deal in July
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 29): Stakes in Digital Nasional Bhd — the special-purpose vehicle set up to roll out the 5G network nationwide — may have been taken up by telco players at the eleventh hour, ahead of Thursday’s (June 30) deadline for them to finalise their decision. According to a report by Singapore’s Straits Times ( ST ), industry sources claim that a non-binding term sheet had been agreed upon by six telcos ahead of the deadline, along with a shareholders agreement to take up a stake in DNB, which is expected to be signed early next month. "We are just doing due diligence, which should be completed within a fortnight," sources told the ST on condition of anonymity due to non-disclosure agreements signed when negotiations began earlier this month. Other sources told the daily that out of nine telcos, only six, including Celcom Axiata Bhd, Digi.com Bhd, Maxis Bhd and U Mobile Sdn Bhd, or collectively known as (CDMU), will take up equal shares in … [Read more...] about Telcos grab DNB stake ahead of 5G rollout deal in July
Malaysia’s top talent is fleeing to Singapore: Daniel Moss
Bloomberg filepix for illustration purpose only - A + A (June 29): Malaysia’s economy is cranking up after the pandemic. Land borders with Singapore have reopened, bringing in millions of visitors. Kuala Lumpur’s notorious traffic jams are back and shoppers are flocking to malls. The revival also has a rich irony: So many workers have left for better-paid jobs in the country’s wealthy southern neighbour that businesses are struggling to meet demand. From tourism to agriculture, an absence of staff is constraining the recovery. It’s also adding to deeper strains in an upper middle-income economy that was once a model for the developing world but has since suffered from a long-term slowdown in growth — one that started well before Covid-19. To graduate to the next tier of prosperous economies, Malaysia must staunch the flow of talented citizens abroad. The nation’s ambition is to escape a middle income trap, where it is less affluent than Singapore, but doing … [Read more...] about Malaysia’s top talent is fleeing to Singapore: Daniel Moss
Shopping mall show awaits Citizen Duterte
President Rodrigo Duterte (MALACAÑANG FILE PHOTO) DAVAO CITY, Davao del Sur, Philippines — Finally free of his duties as the country’s chief executive, Rodrigo Duterte can finally let his hair down and have fun at a concert to be held in his honor at a mall here on Thursday afternoon. The president is stepping down at noon on Thursday after a six-year term fraught with tension and conflict arising from his administration’s attacks on the press, brutal drug war, skirmishes with the Church and perceived critics, and the COVID-19 pandemic. He can forget all about these the moment he sets foot in his hometown, where he practiced as a lawyer and honed his political skills, rising to become vice mayor, mayor (one of the longest in that position), congressman and President, and where he sometimes held Cabinet meetings during his presidency. On Thursday morning, Duterte is scheduled to meet President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Malacañang before he is given departure honors at the … [Read more...] about Shopping mall show awaits Citizen Duterte
