WASHINGTON, D.C. — As the chocolate waters of the Potomac hurried below the Arlington Memorial Bridge on Thursday, the modern Broncos nudged their patriarch one big, overdue step closer to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It’s a matter of time until Pat Bowlen’s bust appears in Canton. Finally and finally predictably, Bowlen was named a contributor finalist for the Hall of Fame. He could be inducted as soon as 2019, perhaps alongside Champ Bailey. The hallmark of Bowlen’s Broncos has been their consistency. How are the Broncos lookin'? Good, usually. It's rare when they stink up the joint for long. Now what I believe to be Bowlen’s greatest statistical achievement hangs precariously from a ledge: over 34 seasons his Broncos have never suffered back-to-back losing records. Not once. That's wild, you know?Among the big four leagues, only the Houston Rockets can say the same. Props to media relations guru Patrick Smyth both for that telling anecdote, … [Read more...] about Paul Klee: In same year Pat Bowlen steps toward Hall of Fame, can Broncos sustain his greatest streak?

After years of a shallow pool of talent at the position, it appears every team in the NFL has something close to a capable quarterback. The influx of talent at the position is due to two factors – a new generation of young players progressing to an elite level earlier than expected, and older players who haven’t seen their skills deteriorate. While every team is always just one injury away from losing their star, heading into the 2018 season the talent at quarterback looks better than it has in years. In 2016, the NFL had a problem. After a year that saw Blaine Gabbert, Matt Cassel, Brian Hoyer, and other less-than-compelling quarterbacks take the lead for their teams under center, many were left to wonder if there just weren’t enough talented quarterbacks on the planet for each team to have a reliable starter. “Why aren’t there 32 starting-calibre QBs in the NFL?” asked Lorenzo Reyes of USA Today. “The NFL has a quarterback development … [Read more...] about The NFL’s biggest quarterback problem was quietly fixed thanks to players starting earlier and lasting longer
NEW YORK — The NFL season doesn't start for another six weeks and already job security is an issue for some coaches.Yes, even in late July.Every season, teams that entered with low expectations show significant improvement and make unexpected deep postseason runs. Last season, Jacksonville with coach Doug Marrone went to the AFC championship game and held a late lead at New England before Tom Brady rallied the Patriots. And, of course, the Eagles and coach Doug Pederson, despite losing Carson Wentz to a torn ACL, beat Brady and Bill Belichick in the Super Bowl. There's always pressure on NFL coaches to win. And win now. Here are a few who enter the 2018 season on the hot seat:VANCE JOSEPH (5-11)Only entering his second season, Joseph's Denver debut was a dud at 5-11 — an avalanche of disappointment by Broncos standards, especially so closely removed from a Super Bowl title. In an attempt to stabilize the QB position that's been troublesome since Peyton Manning retired, the … [Read more...] about Some NFL coaches, including the Broncos’ Vance Joseph, already are on hot seat in July
Nate Davis USA TODAY Published 1:13 p.m. UTC Jul 19, 2018 It's time to dig into those playbooks and hit the ice baths. NFL training camps begin opening this week as veterans for the Baltimore Ravens and Chicago Bears officially report for duty. Summer vacation ends for the league's other 30 teams next week. It won't be long after that until injuries begin to mount, holdouts potentially simmer and flare and other manners of controversy surface. But based on what I know (or think I know) as we embark on the NFL's 99th season, here's my annual prediction of how the season will unfold with record projections for each team based on picking all 256 games, plus a playoff forecast. NFC EAST Philadelphia Eagles (11-5): Underdogs no longer, the champs may be in for a rocky start based on a rough early schedule (particularly October, which includes a Thursday night road game and trip to London) that coincides with Carson Wentz's presumed re-entry from December's ACL tear. Dallas … [Read more...] about 2018 NFL record projections: Detroit Lions will finish 6-10
Everything’s riding on Ryan Tannehill again this year. (Allen Eyestone/The Post) There were clouds of both the literal and figurative variety hovering over the Dolphins on the opening Sunday afternoon of the 1994 season. Nobody seemed to know what to expect of Dan Marino, seeing his first action since tearing his right Achilles tendon nearly a year prior. At least one Dolphin knew what to make of Marino once the returns were in later that day. “I’m telling you all to kiss his … ,” linebacker Bryan Cox told skeptics about as emphatically as Marino had performed. It’s a day that comes to mind as the Dolphins rev up offseason training with organized team activities Tuesday, when we could get our first glimpse of quarterback Ryan Tannehill as he attempts a comeback from a second serious knee injury. Not even the greatest optimist can expect Tannehill to come anywhere close to the magic Marino pulled off in his return: 473 yards and five touchdown … [Read more...] about Ryan Tannehill’s comeback for Miami Dolphins: Marino, other QBs have rebounded quickly
