FC Bengaluru United (FCBU), a football club which was started in 2018, was amid the top four teams in the I-League second division, which is the second tier in the Indian football league system, behind Indian Super League and I-League. But I-League second division last year was interrupted on March 16 due to the coronavirus outbreak. And that played a spoilsport to FC Bengaluru United's plan to win the I-League second division. "We wanted to climb up the ladder. We were doing well just before COVID-19. We were the top five teams to be in the playoffs (in I-League second division). But the pandemic slowed things down. Any stoppage for athletes impacts their game, it slows down the momentum. From a mental standpoint, it was tough for athletes. As a club we had challenges on how to keep the boys (players) fit," said Gaurav Manchanda, owner of FC Bengaluru United. He added that the whole team was in a bio bubble for two months in Bengaluru in a sports school and even the players … [Read more...] about FCBU owner Gaurav Manchanda shares challenges his football club faced due to COVID-19

Personal data protection bill faces further delay despite progress in Indonesia
JAKARTA, June 27 (Jakarta Post/ANN): Deliberations on the highly anticipated Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill in Indonesia are now expected to carry over into the next House of Representatives sitting period, several lawmakers have confirmed, even as the commission in charge pushed through a week-long rally of secret meetings to get the legislation passed by the next plenary. The House Commission I overseeing defense, foreign affairs, informatics and intelligence is currently fast-tracking the PDP bill after lawmakers and the government agreed on a sticking point that had been stalling progress since 2014. Now both sides have come to a compromise regarding the establishment of a data protection oversight agency, which would be set up to answer to the president while offering legislators leeway in determining its scope of authority. House Commission I lawmaker Rizki Natakusumah from the Democratic Party told The Jakarta Post that a presidential regulation would be used to … [Read more...] about Personal data protection bill faces further delay despite progress in Indonesia

6ixty: As cricket improvises and experiments, cricketers face unusual tests
Fans will be able to grant one-ball immunity to a batter once in an innings, in the experimental 6ixty format. This opens up a host of possibilities for sports marketing. (Image: Shutterstock) The first edition of cricket’s newest format – the 6ixty – will be played in the West Indies this August. While it is not prudent to comment on its future until the first season gets underway, there is little doubt that no recent revolution in cricket has involved changes this radical. In cricket’s early days, there were no laws regarding the size of a team. Single-wicket cricket (one person against another) used to be common in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Substantial crowds gathered to watch (and bet on) these matches, for they often featured champions like Fuller Pilch, Tom Marsden, Alfred Mynn, and Nicholas Felix. Two versus two, five versus five – or even matches between teams of unequal size – were common formats as well. Then, as the postal system developed, cricketers … [Read more...] about 6ixty: As cricket improvises and experiments, cricketers face unusual tests
Ruturaj Gaikwad faces flak for pushing groundsman trying to click selfie | Watch
Ruturaj Gaikwad was seen pushing a groundsman away while gesturing him to give him some space. (Screengrab from video) While the fifth T20 international between India and South Africa was called off after 3.3 overs due to rain on Sunday in Bengaluru, more than the action on the field, an incident off it grabbed the spotlight. A video clip recorded during the rain break showed Ruturaj Gaikwad sitting in the dugout with two groundsmen when one of them, sitting very close to the cricketer, tried to take a selfie with him. Gaikwad was then seen pushing the man away while gesturing him to give him some space before looking away. The clip went viral on social media with people calling the cricketer's behaviour towards the groundsman disrespectful. Very bad and disrespectful gesture by Ruturaj Gaikwad. Sad to see these groundsmen getting treated like this #RuturajGaikwad pic.twitter.com/jIXWvUdqIX — Arnav (@imarnav_904) June 19, 2022 "Ban him. Singapore’s US$40 billion mega-port takes aim at shipping chaos
- A + A (June 29): As the world’s economies struggle to untangle unprecedented congestion in global supply chains, one of the world’s busiest ports is backing an ambitious modernization plan to provide solutions. Singapore is forging ahead with a US$40 billion project to build the world’s biggest automated port by 2040 — one that will double the existing space and feature drones and driverless vehicles. The city state started operations at two new berths last year, and construction work is continuing on the next phase. It’s becoming more urgent for ports to add capacity and speed as the pandemic has changed the nature of global supply chains. The just-in-time system for shipping has broken down as exporters in Asia face obstacles getting goods transported to customers in the US and Europe, and the situation has only worsened this year with Covid lockdowns in China and the war in Ukraine. Ports are the most visible choke points in the US$22 trillion arena for … [Read more...] about Singapore’s US$40 billion mega-port takes aim at shipping chaos
Fiestas survive pandemic albeit on socially distanced, masked or virtual scale
MASKED CELEBRATIONS Thousands of devotees turned up at a Mass in Tondo, Manila, during the Feast of the Sto. Niño (Child Jesus) on Jan. 17 this year, wearing masks and face shields. —MARIANNE BERMUDEZ MANILA, Philippines — Christianity was introduced to the Philippines 500 years ago, the faithful have found ways to weave the Filipino culture into their expression of faith, particularly through religious festivals or fiesta — joyous occasions that fill communities with color, hope and a sense of unity. “Although Christianity — the prayers, rituals and devotions — comes from Europe, the past 500 years have shown that the Filipino people have not only embraced Christianity; we have given it a ‘Filipino flavor,’” said former Manila Archbishop Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle. In “Fiesta: Ang Makulay na Pananampalatayang Pilipino,” a documentary film produced by Jesuit Communications to commemorate the 500 years of Christianity in the country, some Filipino festivals and traditions are … [Read more...] about Fiestas survive pandemic albeit on socially distanced, masked or virtual scale
Three pandemics – The worrying long-term effects of Covid-19
THE Covid-19 pandemic “marathon” is not over, even if we wish it to be. Many seem to have a relaxed outlook already, with a drop in mask usage and increased unprotected social gatherings. We have lost all momentum to fix indoor ventilation significantly and vaccination of young children has sadly faltered. Communication by health authorities has been limited to current emerging data and science on our Covid-19 risks. While we work to restart the economy, restore our children’s education loss and support those who have lost jobs or are having food security issues, we must remain mindful of the situation. I would like to briefly summarise current understanding from research and data on Covid-19 and highlight the three pandemics that are occurring. Note: I have not referenced many studies in this letter to facilitate reading. But the comments made are all based on current available data from reliable sources. First pandemic: Covid-19 The Covid-19 pandemic continues to evolve. … [Read more...] about Three pandemics – The worrying long-term effects of Covid-19
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Biden’s ICE Nominee, Withdraws
Harris County, Texas, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, President Joe Biden’s pick to run U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), withdrew Sunday. Biden nominated Gonzalez in April 2021 and he quickly faced questions from Republicans who voiced concerns that he had opposed an ICE screening database. The voluntary database allows for inmates to be screened to determine immigration status, and Gonzalez ultimately opted to end the program for his office in 2017, the Houston Chronicle reported at the time. (RELATED: Texas County Approves $2.5 Million Of Taxpayer Money For Illegal Immigrant Defense Fund) Gonzalez wrote Biden a letter detailing his decision to withdraw from consideration for the position, The Washington Post reported on Monday. In addition to questions over his decisions as Harris County sheriff, Gonzalez’s nomination was stalled amid unconfirmed allegations of domestic violence, ABC 13 reported . “ I arrive at this difficult decision with the understanding … [Read more...] about Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Biden’s ICE Nominee, Withdraws
Why Female CEOs Gave Themselves Pay Cuts While Male CEOs Took Raises
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin After the last two years of pandemic, economic collapse, and the she-cession, it’s time to return to a topic near and dear to this columns’ heart: entrepreneurship. There is nothing that warms said heart quite as much as the idea of a bunch of ambitious young women out there forging their own paths and transforming the world. There’s excitement, heightened by the sense—even back in the 1990s, when I founded my company—of helping to break new ground. And in the decades since, it’s been a distinct pleasure to watch women like Marissa Mayer, Sheryl Sandberg, Jane Fraser, and Safra Catz rise up alongside a whole generation of female business leaders. But unfortunately, there’s no way to talk about the entrepreneurial spirit in 2022 without also talking about the pandemic and its consequences. Chief among those consequences, for our purposes, is the she-cession—but not the narrow, technical definition of the word—the slower job … [Read more...] about Why Female CEOs Gave Themselves Pay Cuts While Male CEOs Took Raises
