China warns US a ‘dangerous situation’ forming over Taiwan

May 19, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (May 19): China’s top diplomat again warned the US over its increased support for Taiwan, showing the island democracy remains a major sticking point between the world’s biggest economies as Beijing sent more military aircraft toward the island. “If the US side insists on playing the Taiwan card and goes further and further down the wrong road, it will certainly lead to a dangerous situation,” Yang Jiechi, Beijing’s top diplomat, said in a phone call with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. Yang said Washington should “have a clear understanding of the situation,” according to a statement posted online by his nation’s Foreign Ministry. “China will certainly take firm action to safeguard its sovereignty and security interests,” he added. The White House issued a short statement on the Wednesday call, saying the pair “focused on regional security issues and nonproliferation.” They also discussed Russia’s war against Ukraine and specific issues in … [Read more...] about China warns US a ‘dangerous situation’ forming over Taiwan

3 ways to manage the stress of being ‘results oriented’

May 18, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Focusing on outcomes is definitely more meaningful than simply showing up and going through the motions of a job. But oftentimes, being too “results oriented” can just as easily get in the way of our work—particularly if expectations are high, or if we don’t feel like the results are in our control, the work can feel overwhelming. It’s a stressful experience. When it comes to creative work or problem solving, it can also be counterproductive—there’s no easier way to clog up the creative process or to start a creative block . advertisement advertisement Here are three ways to get through analysis paralysis or a fixation with results, and to let go of stress to actually do the work well (excerpted from my book, Creative Doing ): Relax expectations With vision comes expectations. We believe this project will be the one that enables us to break through. It would be weird if we didn’t—there might be less of a point in … [Read more...] about 3 ways to manage the stress of being ‘results oriented’

Malaysia’s biggest telcos seek majority stake in 5G agency

May 19, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's four largest telecommunications firms are seeking a majority stake in a state 5G agency, countering a proposal by the government to offer them minority ownership, according to a letter sent by the firms to the finance ministry. The four dominant providers - Celcom Axiata Bhd, DiGi Telecommunications, Maxis Bhd and U Mobile - also want a review of the pricing model and network access plan offered by the agency, according to the May 9 letter seen by Reuters. ALSO READ: Ensuring the success of 5G Their objections to the government's proposal, which offered up to 70% of the country's sole 5G network operator spread among a wider group of companies, raise the risk of delays as the government aims to wrap up discussions on the stake sales by end-June. "We would not be able to justify a passive minority investment in this venture without being able to exercise influence and control to safeguard our investment," the letter said. The Most Unpleasant Success Hack That’s Still Worth Doing: Create a ‘Failure Resume’

March 1, 2022 by www.inc.com

In the course of writing eight books, Dan Pink has offered tons of easy, actionable tips to help readers become happier, more successful human beings. That's probably why many of them are bestsellers. But his latest covers a topic that's inherently a lot more gloomy than previous titles on intrinsic motivation and the power of crafty scheduling . His latest, The Power of Regret , is just what the title suggests. In it, Pink delves into the universal human emotion of regret , arguing that while it's not at all a pleasant feeling, it is both an inescapable and a useful one. My colleague Christine Lagorio-Chafkin interviewed Pink for a full rundown of the book's lessons for business owners for Inc.'s What I Know podcast . For a quick example of how to leverage regret to improve your life, I point you to the latest newsletter of Pink's fellow author Steven Johnson . The no-fun exercise that will radically improve your life. In it, Johnson asks Pink … [Read more...] about The Most Unpleasant Success Hack That’s Still Worth Doing: Create a ‘Failure Resume’

The Worst Advice I Have Ever Heard as a Business Coach

March 2, 2022 by www.inc.com

As a business coach for more than 25 years, I have heard a lot of business advice from leaders and other business coaches in the industry. And much of it, while it may seem well intentioned, is actually pretty bad advice. And there are a few pieces of it that I have heard over and over again that make me cringe. So today I want to share one of the worst tips I have heard and tell you what you should be doing instead. "Do what you love, and the money will follow" This piece of advice is often given to a new entrepreneur looking to start their own business. They don't really know what they want to do yet, and have dabbled in a few things, but haven't really found anything that has gained traction. Their business acquaintances see them searching and share this tidbit as a way to help their friend find their path. And it is often coupled with a story of a friend of a friend, who found a love for some obscure hobby and turned that hobby into a multimillion-dollar business … [Read more...] about The Worst Advice I Have Ever Heard as a Business Coach

New Research: Beware ‘Dark Empaths,’ the Toxic Personality Type That Hides in Plain Sight

March 29, 2022 by www.inc.com

For most people, the word psychopath conjures up images of hardened criminals and ax-wielding lunatics. Certainly, many psychopaths end up in prison. But many others lead outwardly normal lives. There is, for instance, the neuroscientist studying psychopathy who accidentally discovered at age 60 that his own brain worked just like those of the criminals he was studying. Or for evidence of this fact you could look at the research showing that business leaders are three times more likely to be psychopaths than the general population. Clearly, lots of psychopaths wield pens not weapons, and spend their days in the C-suite not the penitentiary. How is this possible? Previous research shows that so-called " dark traits " -- characteristics like lack of empathy, manipulativeness, and narcissism that everyday folks associate with the term "psycho" -- express themselves in different ways . New research discovered a particularly hard-to-spot type that entrepreneurs and other … [Read more...] about New Research: Beware ‘Dark Empaths,’ the Toxic Personality Type That Hides in Plain Sight

Why Israel Drew 28 Times More Venture Capital Per Capita Than the U.S.

March 29, 2022 by www.inc.com

Despite the flourishing of work from anywhere during the pandemic , it still matters where a startup is located. That's because, as I wrote in Startup Cities , regions of the world differ in the vitality of their local Startup Commons -- a collection of regional resources that at best provide an irresistible attraction for capital and talent or at worst repel both. This comes to mind in considering the flow of venture capital around the world in 2021. A striking conclusion is that on a per capita basis, capital flows into Israel were a whopping 28 times more than those in the U.S. To be sure, 2021 venture capital flow into the U.S. was way larger than into Israel -- up at 154 percent in 2021 to $330 billion versus 136 percent higher to $25.4 billion, according to NoCamels But Israel's population of about nine million is a fraction of the U.S.'s 330 million people. Hence, Israel's $28,000 in venture capital invested per capita in 2021 is far above the … [Read more...] about Why Israel Drew 28 Times More Venture Capital Per Capita Than the U.S.

Why You Must Unlearn Habits and Beliefs as Your Company Grows (and How to Do It)

May 13, 2022 by www.inc.com

Before I went through personal development , I was closed-minded. Negative. Jealous. Thought I knew better. I thought that successful people were just lucky. That I was born less privileged than the rich and successful. Then I went to those seminars where you hug and hi-five and dance on your chairs like it's 1985 to the Black Eyed Peas' I Gotta Feeling. I started reading self-help books and articles until 1 a.m. Previously the kind of thing I rolled my eyes at, I invested in myself. I even got therapy. I was high on life, and felt that the glass is half full--happiness is a choice. All the gurus taught beliefs like, the more you learn, the more you earn. Invest in yourself--you pay the best interest. The mind is like a parachute--it works best when it's open. So off I went on a 15-year journey of "learning to earn." Knowledge plus action is power. And it worked--to a point. I got out of £50,000 of debt. I sacked my boss, like they said I should. Became … [Read more...] about Why You Must Unlearn Habits and Beliefs as Your Company Grows (and How to Do It)
