The Indiana state legislature banned biologically male athletes from playing on women’s sports at public schools on Tuesday, overriding Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb’s veto on the legislation. HEA 1041 , set to go into effect July 1, requires public schools designate sports categories by sex and the genetics of the athletes. Holcomb originally vetoed HEA 1041 in March 2022, arguing at the time that the bill did not offer “one consistent state policy regarding the fairness in K-12 sports in Indiana.” Today, legislators successfully voted to override the governor’s veto and protect the integrity of girls’ sports. This new law prohibits biological males from competing on girls’ K-12 sports teams. Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb Vetoes Bill Banning Biological Boys From Competing On Girls Sports Teams
Republican Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb vetoed Monday a bill requiring biological boys who identify as girls to compete on boys sports teams. The bill would have prevented biological boys who identify as girls from competing on girls sports teams at public schools for grades K-12. Had it been signed into law, the bill also would have allowed for a civil action suit to be brought against a school or institution subject to it if such an entity violated its provisions, according to the text of the bill. Holcomb said the bill “falls short” of creating “one consistent state policy regarding the fairness in K-12 sports in Indiana.” “First, as to process, the wide-open nature of the grievance provisions in HEA 1041 that apply to all K-12 schools in Indiana makes it unclear about how consistency and fairness will be maintained for parents and students across different counties and school districts,” Holcomb wrote in a letter to Speaker of the House Todd Huston. “Student-athletes … [Read more...] about Indiana Gov. Billionaire brothers John and Patrick Collison built Stripe into one of the world’s most-hyped, highest valued — and profitable! — startups, worth some $95 billion. Now they must stave off going from disruptor to disrupted. I t’s just before five o’clock, and Stripe Cofounder John Collison is preparing to address his hundreds of Ireland-based employees on the top floor of his headquarters in Dublin’s “Silicon Docks” District. Such regular Friday town halls, which are also simulcast to New York, San Francisco, Singapore and anywhere else its 7,000 employees want to tune in from over Zoom, are an almost sacred tradition at Stripe, the payments company that Collison cofounded with big brother Patrick in 2010. With Patrick away getting married, it’s up to John, 31 and with a dusting of gray hair now topping his boyish face, to field questions. It could get contentious: There’s a social media “kerfuffle” playing out over Twitter this week: Stripe has been accused in a … [Read more...] about The Collison Brothers Built Stripe Into A $95 Billion Unicorn With Eye-Popping Financials. Swansong of the iPod
Technology dates our anecdotes. (Image: Brett Jordan via Unsplash) iPods are bidding goodbye. They will follow the Walkman into the great heaven for obsolete technology and machinery. There they will be with cameras, wristwatches, telegrams and STD calls, smirking at the arrogance of iPhone 13, Fitbits and Smart TV. Like all formerly trendy apparatus, they know that every gadget is mortal. The end is nigh, sooner or later. We remember with a nostalgic pang the time iPods first came into our lives over two decades ago. Suddenly music was directly in our ear. We could listen to songs in a way we never could before; they travelled with us, went on forever and sang only to us. Like having a personal orchestra! From LP records to tape recorders and CDs, it’s been a bumpy ride for music lovers. And iPods changed all that. Just like that. One fine day. Of course, such is life. We’ve had to say ta-ta to black and white TV sets and refrigerators that wheezed loudly as if on life … [Read more...] about Swansong of the iPod
Rising cost of living must be addressed
Recently, the issue of the increase in the cost of living has become a hot topic once again. The public is saddled with growing concerns over the shortage of chicken supply, food security, coupled with the rising prices of essential goods whilst e-hailing companies up their fares. The flow-down effects arising from the rising prices of goods and services will result in similar price hikes of non-controlled goods and services, such as, milk and disposable diapers, children's pocket money, school bus fares, meals, vehicle fuel expenses and others. In fact, the issue of the rising cost of living is a global issue faced around the world including developed countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Korea and Japan. Malaysia is no exception in experiencing a jump in daily living costs. Wanita MCA takes this issue seriously, more so, for people residing in urban areas. This is because rising living costs will cause psychological stress in the household, which can lead to … [Read more...] about Rising cost of living must be addressed
What’s US politics got to do with Elon Musk’s $44 billion Twitter offer?
Elon Musk’s audacious bid appears to threaten the stranglehold that left-liberal politicians and intelligentsia have had over both American mainstream and social media for years now. (Illustration by Suneesh K.) It was probably inevitable that Elon Musk’s $44-billion bid to buy social media platform Twitter would turn intensely political. After all, ever since the 2016 US presidential election, the right wing and conservatives have been accusing the company of a leftist/Democratic Party bias. Musk, who calls himself a “free speech absolutist”, too has made it clear several times that he thinks Twitter’s censorship and intervention laws are skewed. Events have moved fast in the month since Musk made his offer of purchase, and he has been facing attacks coming from all directions. Within days of the Twitter board accepting Musk’s offer, the Joe Biden administration announced the creation of a “ Disinformation Governance Board ”. To many people, this did not seem to be a … [Read more...] about What’s US politics got to do with Elon Musk’s $44 billion Twitter offer?

Delhi High Court split ruling: Marital rape still not a crime in India
India is one of only 32 countries in the world, including Pakistan, Bangladesh and Libya, where marital rape is still not considered a crime. (Illustration: eShe) In another setback for Indian women, the safeguard for a husband against a rape charge by his wife remained intact in the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after a two-judge bench in the Delhi High Court gave a split ruling on May 11, 2022, while hearing a case against marital rape. The bench, comprising Justice Rajiv Shakdher and Justice C. Hari Shankar, gave opposing rulings. The former deemed the law unconstitutional and “steeped in patriarchy and misogyny” whereas the latter felt that removing the law would hurt marriage as an institution. The question arises: what kind of an institution demands subjugation of one partner and allows cruelty and inhumanity by the other? And can such an ‘institution’ be the bedrock of a modern democratic society? “'My body, my right’ is an integral part of the right to personal liberty … [Read more...] about Delhi High Court split ruling: Marital rape still not a crime in India
