Thailand News Today | Crashed China eastern flight possible “intentional nosedive”

May 18, 2022 by thethaiger.com

Black box data on crashed China Eastern 737 suggests possible “intentional nosedive” Investigators are now examining further if the crash of China Eastern Airlines 737-800 on March 21 was indeed due to “intentional action on the flight deck”. The early reports say that there is, so far, no evidence of a technical malfunction. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that flight data from one of the two “black boxes” on the Boeing jet indicated that “someone in the cockpit intentionally crashed the plane”. The comments were made by people the WSJ cited as “familiar with the preliminary assessment by US officials”. US National Transportation Safety Board officials have been working with engineers from Boeing and investigators from the Civil Aviation Administration of China since the crash. Boeing, the US manufacturer of the jet, has so far declined to comment on the early leaks and, instead, referred all questions to the Chinese regulators. At this stage, the CAAC, … [Read more...] about Thailand News Today | Crashed China eastern flight possible “intentional nosedive”

May 18, 2022 by thethaiger.com

LINE, a chat app popular in Thailand, is warning users to be on the lookout for scammers who might use SMS and LINE chat to steal personal information. The app said today that recently, some scammers claimed to be company officials, and posted job announcements via SMS and Line chat. LINE said that scammers are also adding people as ‘friends’ in order to steal their personal information, and hurting people and companies involved. The app tells users they can report scammers by clicking ‘Other settings’ and ‘Report’. “…we would like to ask Line users not to click on links with unknown origin or provide personal information through online channels without checking thoroughly.” This news comes after Thai police warned the public last month not to fall for so-called ‘deepfake’ scams . A Thai deputy police spokesman warned that scammers are using deepfake technology to pretend to be police on video calls, and pressure people to transfer money to them. Rules, traditions and quirks in Thailand that Malaysians should know

May 19, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

There's plenty of hustle and bustle a minute before 8am in Lumphini Park, the greenest area of Bangkok in Thailand. Hundreds of people go jogging beneath the fragrant frangipani trees, elderly ladies work on their Tai Chi, while another group is practising Zumba. But all stand still when the clock strikes the hour. People stop dead in their tracks as the national anthem sounds through the park. Joggers slow down, old men rise from their benches, in line with the rule. People in public places are meant to stand at attention when the Phleng Chat Thai anthem plays – twice a day, at 8am and 6pm. Only the large lizards who prowl the pavements and dart through the undergrowth can be seen scurrying about. This is their home too and they are unimpressed by the tradition that governs activity in the lakes and gardens of Lumphini Park. Locals are expected to stop whatever they are doing and stand still whenever the Thai national anthem is played. Newcomers to Thailand have much … [Read more...] about Rules, traditions and quirks in Thailand that Malaysians should know

Thai officials visit Saudi Arabia for roadshow, push for more tourists

May 18, 2022 by thethaiger.com

As part of a push to draw more Middle Eastern tourists to Thailand, tourism officials visited Saudi Arabia on May 15-16 in a roadshow. There, the Tourism Authority of Thailand signed a memorandum of cooperation with Almosafer, the biggest OTA in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The TAT also signed an MoC with Saudia, Saudi Arabia’s flag carrier, to promote a global campaign as well as luxury and wellness products. At the roadshow, Thai operators received 128 business appointments on average, estimated to generate 1 billion baht this year. Thailand now also plans to set up halal food centres in every province in order to promote halal tourism. This news comes after the TAT set a goal in March of attracting 200,000-500,000 Middle Eastern tourists to Thailand this year. Thailand is particularly seeking to attract Middle Eastern tourists for medical and wellness tourism. Last week, TAT brought 24 operators to the Arabian Travel Market 2022 at Dubai World Trade Centre, hoping to attract … [Read more...] about Thai officials visit Saudi Arabia for roadshow, push for more tourists

New Krabi Airport terminal scheduled to open in November

May 18, 2022 by thethaiger.com

Krabi International Airport is hoping to double its passenger capacity when a new passenger terminal opens, car parking areas increased and renovations are completed on the old terminal. The terminals were expected to officially open in October, but the schedule is now postponed until November due to delays caused by the Covid pandemic in Thailand (although The Thaiger notes the terminal has been largely empty for most of the past year). Yesterday, the Department of Airports updated the development of the construction and renovations at Krabi International Airport. The department says that the project is now 80% complete, and was expected to be finished before November this year. The report says that the new terminal and 2 renovated terminals would provide 68,000 square metres – doubling the passenger capacity from 4 million passengers to 8 million passengers per year. The car parking building would be able to accommodate 2,000 cars. Airport officials say that the new or third … [Read more...] about New Krabi Airport terminal scheduled to open in November

Malaysia is set to increase the value of its location-based incentives from the current 30% to 35%, the government is expected to announce this week in Cannes. The Film in Malaysia Incentive (FIMI) was launched in 2013, around the time that the Iskandar Malaysia studios were opened in the south of the country, and is administered by the National Film Development Corp (Finas). Finas and Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa will lead a Malaysian delegation at the Cannes Market and is expected to reveal details of the FIMI upgrade at a Malaysia-focused conference on May 19. "Finas intends to use the Marche film market as a platform to promote Malaysia as an international filming destination that offers 30% cash rebate through FIMI and up to 5% [additional] through a cultural test," Finas chief executive Prof Dr Md Nasir Ibrahim told state news agency Bernama, in a pre-departure briefing. Details of the cultural test may be outlined at the Cannes presentation. … [Read more...] about Malaysia to increase location production incentives to attract investors

Thailand's Puripol Boonson celebrates winning gold in the men's 100m final at the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi on May 18, 2022. (AFP photo) Thai teenager Puripol Boonson destroyed the opposition to win the men's 100m in 10.44secs at the SEA Games on Wednesday and grab a sprint double in Hanoi. Kayla Anise Richardson of the Philippines won the women's 100m to add to 200m bronze in the Vietnamese capital. But the night belonged to wonder kid Puripol, 16, who easily beat the rest of the field to silence the almost wholly local crowd at My Dinh stadium. "Before the competition I was under a lot of pressure... but I made it and I'm very glad," he told reporters. The teenager had already made headlines at the regional showpiece after twice breaking the Games record in the 200m, his best time of 20.37secs bringing gold. "My target for this year is that I will try to consistently improve my record and break my own record," Puripol … [Read more...] about Record-breaking Puripol, 16, wins SEA Games sprint double

Second US shooting in 2 days leaves 1 dead and 4 seriously injured in California

May 17, 2022 by thethaiger.com

A shooting at a church around 70 kilometres outside Los Angeles, California, has left 1 person dead and 4 critically injured. It comes just a day after a man opened fire and gunned down 10 people at a supermarket in New York state. According to media reports, the second US mass shooting in as many days took place at the Geneva Presbyterian Church, when a lone gunman began shooting the congregation at around 1.30pm on Sunday (03.30am Monday morning in Thailand). Jeff Hallock from the Orange County Sheriff’s department says members of the congregation managed to get hold of the shooter, using an extension cable to “hogtie” his legs and confiscating at least 2 of his weapons. “That group of churchgoers displayed what we believe is exceptional heroism, and bravery. They undoubtedly prevented additional injuries and fatalities.” It’s understood most of the congregation are Taiwanese and authorities are still waiting to question up to 40 witnesses. Prosecutor in Red Bull heir case kicked out of civil service

May 18, 2022 by thethaiger.com

Today, Thailand’s public prosecution committee unanimously agreed to kick ex-general attorney Nate Naksuk out of the civil service for choosing not to indict the “Red Bull heir,” who killed a police officer in a hit-and-run incident back in 2012. Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidya – the grandson of billionaire Red Bull co-founder Chaleo Yoovidhya – became a fugitive after speeding through the Thong Lor area of Bangkok in his Ferrari, running over police officer Wichian Klanprasert, dragging his body through the road, resulting in his death. The meeting held today was chaired by Chairman of the Public Prosecutors Board Pachara Thuttadamrong. A total of 8 people unanimously voted to remove Nate from the civil service after 40 years of service. The board agreed that Nate “lacks prudence in listening to important facts and evidence.” The case is resurfacing now because one of five original charges the Red Bull heir faced – “cocaine use” – will expire on September 3 2022. Two years ago, … [Read more...] about Prosecutor in Red Bull heir case kicked out of civil service
