Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan - A + A YAN (June 26): Areas identified as being at high risk of geological disasters, especially debris flow, will be given priority for the installation of Early Warning System (EWS), said Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan. He said the Minerals and Geoscience Department (JMG) has information on the risky locations, but it cannot be disclosed at this time. "According to our experts, there may be an area at risk and needs to be given priority. We cannot wait until a disaster strikes before taking action," he told reporters after attending the EWS Debris Flow Geological Disaster awareness programme with the Jerai Geopark community on Sunday. He said the EWS, which was installed at Titi Hayun here following the debris flow disaster in August last year, is a pilot project that will be used as a national benchmark and model in reducing the risk of such disasters. The system will be installed in other … [Read more...] about Takiyuddin: EWS to be installed in areas at risk of geological disasters

Roe V. Wade Overturned: The Ultimate Explainer On What It Means
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Supreme Court on Friday overturned the nationwide right to abortion in its landmark Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization ruling, causing major uncertainty about the future of abortion access in the United States. Here are answers to some of the biggest questions: What did the Supreme Court’s ruling say? In a decision by Justice Samuel Alito, the court upheld a Mississippi law banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. A majority of justices also voted to strike down Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992), effectively ruling abortion is no longer a nationwide right and giving states the power to ban the procedure. Alito called Roe v. Wade “an abuse of judicial authority” that relied on “egregiously wrong” reasoning, and argued the right to abortion is not expressly mentioned in the Constitution and isn’t “deeply rooted in this Nation's history and tradition.” Four other conservative … [Read more...] about Roe V. 5G is coming to Denver, and it’s not just for smartphones: It could mean super-fast internet at home, too
Starry, a Boston technology company, launched a 5G broadband service in Denver late last month, one it promises will bring, for the dollar spent, much faster and more reliable broadband services to thousands of people living in apartments and condos. “There is so little choice of internet-only service out there,” said Alex Moulle-Berteaux, the company’s chief operating officer. “Many of our subscribers are cord cutters.” Starry is targeting those frustrated with the slower and sometimes spotty DSL service from CenturyLink and the faster, but more expensive and entangled packages from Xfinity. It is bringing a third option to the table, 5G wireless . For those in reach of the signal, the network provides a minimum speed of 200 Megabits per second (Mbps), up and down, for a flat $50 a month, without caps on data usage, no equipment charges and no long-term contracts. Moulle-Berteaux said the company has speeds that are five times as fast. Starry represents a “fixed” use … [Read more...] about 5G is coming to Denver, and it’s not just for smartphones: It could mean super-fast internet at home, too
What is the EU gas crisis? Here’s all you need to know
Representative image (Image: Shutterstock) Amid reduced flows of Russian gas supply, European nations are left scrambling for alternative choices buoyed by inflationary pressures and supply chain disturbances. Gas prices have hit record levels in Europe, adding to challenges for policymakers trying to haul Europe back from an economic slowdown. Also Read: What are Europe's options in case of Russian gas disruption? EU relied on Russia for 40 percent of its gas needs before war: The European Union (EU) relied on Russia for as much as 40 percent of its gas needs before the Russia-Ukraine war — rising to 55 percent for Germany, leaving a huge gap to fill in an already tight global gas market. According to experts, coal is the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel in terms of emissions, yet the most important target for replacement to alternative energy sources, reported Reuters. Electricity tariff surcharge status quo a negative surprise for TNB
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 26): While the public welcomed the government's decision not to raise electricity tariff surcharge in the coming six months, the move is a negative surprise for Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), which already saw cash flow squeeze, rising debt levels and record-high receivables in the first quarter as a result of rising fuel costs. TNB, which procures coal and natural gas for Peninsular Malaysia's power generation, may need to borrow more to fund the procurement if it cannot quickly recover the earlier spending on fuel costs, analysts said. Last Friday (June 24), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government had maintained the 1H22 (first half of 2022) electricity tariff surcharge of 3.7 sen/kwh for non-domestic users, and a rebate of two sen/kwh for domestic users for the July-December 2022 period. In a nutshell, TNB pays upfront for fuel costs before they are compensated six months down the road through a higher tariff … [Read more...] about Electricity tariff surcharge status quo a negative surprise for TNB
Goldman says signs are here of belt-tightening impact on profits
- A + A SINGAPORE (June 26): The first hints that consumer belt-tightening is passing through to corporate earnings are coming in, posing a bigger risk to US equities than stock-selling by American households, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. High inflation and declining asset prices had started to strain household finances, Goldman strategists led by David Kostin wrote on Friday. They cited the 0.3% drop in retail sales in May and the record-low Michigan consumer sentiment reading for June. Retailers such as Target Corp and Walmart Inc appeared to have overestimated consumer demand in some general merchandise categories and were now discounting items to clear excess inventory, the strategists said. "Declining consumer spending does represent a threat to earnings for consumer discretionary stocks and the autos industry group in particular," they said. "Used car prices have declined 6% since January, a sign that demand for vehicles overall may be … [Read more...] about Goldman says signs are here of belt-tightening impact on profits
The rich-poor divide on clean power is getting wider
Representative Image To look at the way richer countries are spending money on the energy transition, you might think we’re within reach of bringing Climate Change under control. Investment in clean energy has only accelerated in the years since COVID-19 struck. In the second half of the last decade, it grew at a 2 percent annual rate. Since 2020, that’s risen to 12 percent a year. This year, it will hit $1.4 trillion, the International Energy Agency wrote in its annual investment report on June 22, putting green power comprehensively ahead of the roughly $1 trillion that’s being spent on fossil fuels. If you assume those trends will continue, it looks even more promising. Just continuing to inflate existing spending at current growth rates would imply that advanced economies and China spend in the region of $650 billion a year on clean power over the remainder of this decade, the IEA wrote — within sight of the $850 billion-odd that’s needed to put the world on track to … [Read more...] about The rich-poor divide on clean power is getting wider
Striking Railway Workers Should Cease Using Disabled Passengers As A Bargaining Chip
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Over the past seven days, striking railway workers have plunged much of Britain’s rail network into chaos causing misery for passengers in a dispute over pay and guarantees around future redundancies. Following walkouts undertaken by members of the National Union of Rail Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) on June 21 and 23, which paralyzed much of the country’s rail infrastructure, yesterday saw the third day of strikes in a week — with more expected to arrive over the course of the summer. The recent spate of railway strikes has been described as the largest of its kind in three decades. One of the arguments against staff cutbacks routinely trotted out by the likes of General Secretary of the RMT Mick Lynch is that any move towards driver-only trains with no guard on board will have a deleterious impact on disabled passengers as there will be nobody available to provide assistance. While there is … [Read more...] about Striking Railway Workers Should Cease Using Disabled Passengers As A Bargaining Chip
