Segregation By Design: How one architect is visualizing the legacy of America’s racist urbanism

May 16, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Walking around the north side of Philadelphia’s University City neighborhood, it’s difficult to imagine what stood before the sprawling University of Pennsylvania medical campus, replete with scores of half-empty parking lots and franchise restaurants. But for Segregation By Design , a new initiative that seeks to unearth the legacy of racist planning in American cities, the visual history is clear. What stood before University City was Black Bottom , a thriving Black working-class community whose proximity to Philadelphia’s urban core made it a prime target for the 1950s slum clearance, freeway construction, and redevelopment projects that decimated hundreds of low-income neighborhoods across the country. advertisement advertisement Segregation by Design, which takes the form of a blog-style website, various social media pages, and a forthcoming book helps long-time residents and the urban-curious alike visualize the legacy of racist … [Read more...] about Segregation By Design: How one architect is visualizing the legacy of America’s racist urbanism

How Can I Help? Why ‘Adding Value First’ Is the Winning Formula for Growth

October 14, 2014 by www.inc.com

If you have been blessed with an entrepreneurial spirit, then you are no stranger to hard work or commitment. But a great idea and a strong work ethic alone are not sufficient to grow your business. Today your customers have virtually unlimited options that are only a click away, so competing on price alone will not be enough to fuel growth. In fact, the historically tried and true four P's of marketing (Product, Price, Place & Promotion) are all being challenged by a simple winning formula--add value first. What is your gift to the world? What is the one thing your company is willing to give away that both provides value to your customers and illustrates your company's value? If you're Google, that would include everything from Android (its mobile phone operating system) to Gmail. Google's market cap is almost $400 billion dollars, and the majority of its customers have never paid Google a dime. Same goes for Facebook. These companies figured out how to give value to the … [Read more...] about How Can I Help? Why ‘Adding Value First’ Is the Winning Formula for Growth

Vietnam versus Thailand – which is the best for travel or living?

September 12, 2019 by thethaiger.com

They are both beautiful countries and stand out amongst their south east asian counterparts for their food, culture and scenery. But which one is your choice for travelling or living in? Here are some introductory thoughts… Influences Thailand is a constitutional monarchy and the former king, King Bhumibol, was greatly loved and respected. His son, King Maha Vachiralongkorn, now maintains the customs and traditions of the Thai monarchy. His coronation was an elaborate ceremony in May 2019 celebrated by all Thais. The main religion in Thailand is Theravada Buddhism. Monks retain high status and are a big part of daily life, from festivals to daily blessings. Young Thai men become novice monks for a period – usually 1-3 weeks – to earn “merit” for their families. Thailand is a hodge podge of old culture and traditions fused with modern western influences – often at the same time. Thais celebrate everything and are reasonably tolerant to all cultures. Thai people always try … [Read more...] about Vietnam versus Thailand – which is the best for travel or living?

So you want to move to Vietnam?

December 12, 2019 by thethaiger.com

“Whilst Thailand is often nicknamed the ‘land of a thousand 7-elevens’, with a convenience store on just about every corner, there are very few of these in Vietnam, for now.” With the Thai Baht on a high at the moment, along with stricter enforcement of visa rules, some expats say they’ve had enough and are heading to Vietnam, or some other south east Asian country, where they might improve their personal situation. For example, an expat pensioner, on a fixed income, from a country where the Thai baht has risen against your currency, Thailand has become a more expensive option – perhaps impossible to make ends meet anymore with your old pension. The British pound, as just one currency, has gone from around 55 baht to the pound four years ago, to now around 39 baht, a big loss in value. Meanwhile the cost of living in Thailand has risen over the last decade. But Vietnam has its own challenges and, whilst being an amazing place to explore as a tourist, may not be to everyone’s … [Read more...] about So you want to move to Vietnam?

Why The Eternal Optimism Of Paul McCartney Never Goes Out Of Style

May 17, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It was 46 years ago Paul McCartney answered his critics and John Lennon, who claimed he often wrote songs that were too corny and sentimental, with the No 1 smash, "Silly Love Songs." In the song's opening stanza, McCartney sings, “You’d think that people would have had enough of silly love songs/I look around me and I see it isn’t so/Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs/And what’s wrong with that?/I’d like to know/’Cause here I go again.” Though McCartney wrote the song somewhat tongue in cheek, like so many geniuses, he turned out to be stunningly prophetic. Because watching McCartney Friday night at L.A.'s Sofi Stadium it was abundantly clear how much the world still needs his silly love songs. The eternal optimism of McCartney, at least publicly, is the ninth wonder of the world. Most perceptive people look at the world, and even before the horrific racially motivated shootings that happened … [Read more...] about Why The Eternal Optimism Of Paul McCartney Never Goes Out Of Style
