BIDEN INVOKES EMERGENCY WAR POWERS TO BUILD SOLAR PANELS… NY POST: Biden draws heat for invoking Defense Production Act to boost solar panels President Biden drew criticism Monday after invoking the Defense Production Act to potentially expedite the production of solar panels — with journalists and Republicans questioning the rationale for using special wartime powers. Renewable energy advocates, meanwhile, cheered the White House announcement that Biden would invoke the act “to accelerate domestic production of clean energy technologies, including solar panel parts.” […] The Biden administration did not specify a national-defense reason for using the act to boost solar panels. When Biden was vice president, the Obama administration aggressively pushed for solar energy production — sparking the Solyndra scandal when a politically-connected firm went bankrupt after getting $535 million in federal loan guarantees. U.S. Recession: Just A Technicality? [Infographic]
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When the U.S. recorded two consecutive quarters of negative growth in Q1 and Q2 of 2022, the Biden administration was quick to point out that while the development constituted a widespread definition of recession, the official classification was indeed a different, less clear-cut one and that the U.S. had in fact not entered a recession officially until the National Bureau of Economic Research said so. So far, no unsatisfying. But government analysts might have a point when alleging that a recession only happens when there is “a significant decline in economic activity over more than a few months, which is assessed using several indicators, including the labor market, consumer and business spending, industrial production, and incomes.” Contradictory economic data has characterized the current “weird economy”— as one CNN correspondent put it —which isn’t exactly struggling, but also not exactly doing well. Archie Battersbee: U.K. Boy At The Center Of Life Support Battle Dies
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A U.K. boy who’s been the focus of an international legal battle has died hours after his life support was switched off. The parents of Archie Battersbee, 12, who suffered severe brain injuries in April, have been trying to keep him on life support for weeks, taking the case as far as the United Nations and the European Court of Human Rights. But doctors, and courts, argued Battersbee was “ brain stem dead ” and that further efforts to keep him alive were “futile.” He died just after midday on Saturday, almost exactly four months after he was found unconscious at home. His parents, Peter Battersbee and Hollie Dance, believe he may have been taking part in a social media challenge at the time. He has been in the care of the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel ever since. The tragic case has gripped the nation, with each legal appeal covered widely in the media. Assisted by the Christian Legal Centre, his … [Read more...] about Archie Battersbee: U.K. Boy At The Center Of Life Support Battle Dies
Is Home Ownership Still A Good Idea?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Almost everyone who grew up in the United States after the end of World War II understood that an indicator of economic success if not the indicator was owning “your own home.” Homeownership attained mythic status representing not just climbing a rung up an economic ladder but a social and psychological one; owning a home meant being a full member of society. But is it really a good idea? While there are real, measurable economic gains that can be attributed to owning a home – or rather borrowing for one – has it had deleterious effects? Is it time to ask this question more seriously along with the essential one: “Is there an alternative and do we even need one?” A film by The Economist a couple years ago sets the stage for this conversation. The film’s title, “How an obsession with home ownership can ruin the economy,” might overstate the case just a bit, but it lays out in 12 minutes some of the most compelling challenges … [Read more...] about Is Home Ownership Still A Good Idea?
Study: Housing Providers’ Rent Increases Often Don’t Match Market
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Perhaps one of the most iconic portrayals of a greedy landlord is Benoit from Puccini’s La Boehme . The character arrives on the scene at the opening of the play looking to collect rent and then proudly confesses infidelity to the poor artists he’s trying to shake down. They pretend to be outraged by his immorality, eject him, and use the rent money for a night on the town. The image of the poor but righteous tenants is so compelling a modern musical adaptation of the opera is called Rent . But are housing providers really trying to squeeze every last cent from their residents? A study from Berkeley indicates that often, housing providers leave money on the table, giving discounts and often failing to keep up with the market. The study, Affordable Housing Without Public Subsidies: Rent-Setting Practices in Small Rental Properties , takes a look at how housing providers set their rents and how those rents relate to … [Read more...] about Study: Housing Providers’ Rent Increases Often Don’t Match Market
He wouldn’t have done it
In Memoriam: Fidel Valdez Ramos FVR was a revolutionary. FVR was a hero. He put adherence to the nation’s Constitution and support of the people over loyalty to his boss. He staked his life in a daring coup that risked failure but instead succeeded when the people massed in support. Cory Aquino had won the snap election, and FVR defended it. Later, perhaps in gratitude, Cory anointed FVR to replace her. The populace agreed, he became the second post-Marcos leader. He immediately sat down to work. Complete staff work (CSW) in red pen and frequent meetings with Congress (83 in all), coupled with a work ethic that wore everyone else out resulted in a complete overhaul of the country’s political, social, and economic condition. He opened up the economy and instituted reforms to provide a fairer, more attractive condition in which business could flourish. He traveled extensively to convince foreign businessmen this was the place to invest. They did. What stood out was how, through … [Read more...] about He wouldn’t have done it

Box office: ‘Bullet Train’ arrives with so-so $30.1 million debut, ‘Easter Sunday’ stumbles
- A + A LOS ANGELES (Aug 7): "Bullet Train," a John Wick-ian romp with Brad Pitt in the aisle seat, arrived in theaters with a $30.1 million opening weekend. That's enough to top the domestic box office chart, but it's only a so-so result given "Bullet Train's" $90 million price tag and Pitt's star power. The Sony Pictures release will need to maintain its momentum in the coming weeks as it tries to break even or turn a profit. "Bullet Train" is trying to prove that an action flick that isn't based on a comic book or a toy-line can defy the odds and resonate with audiences. But part of the issue for the film is that critics weren't on board. "Bullet Train" landed a mediocre 41% approval rating on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviewers faulting the movie for being overly derivative of the work of Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino. Variety chief film critic Peter Debruge was mixed on "Bullet Train," writing that "neither the characters nor the … [Read more...] about Box office: ‘Bullet Train’ arrives with so-so $30.1 million debut, ‘Easter Sunday’ stumbles
Annuar: Do not hoard cooking oil
Tan Sri Annuar Musa (Photo by Zahid Izzani Mohd Said/The Edge) - A + A SERDANG (Aug 7): Those directly involved in the ecosystem for production and sale of palm-based cooking oil should avoid hoarding or rationing the commodity following the setting of its maximum price at RM34.70 per five-kilogramme bottle effective from Monday (Aug 8), said Tan Sri Annuar Musa. The Chairman of the Special Task Force on Jihad Against Inflation said if traders and retailers resort to such practices, they will ultimately lose out, apart from creating problems for consumers. "Just because the price of oil will drop, for example, people should not start hoarding. It won't solve the problem," he told reporters after visiting the Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Exhibition 2022 (MAHA 2022) at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang on Sunday. He said this when asked about the possibility of irresponsible parties hoarding cooking oil when its price is low, a practice … [Read more...] about Annuar: Do not hoard cooking oil
An ADHD diagnosis can be expensive and inaccurate. This company’s test addresses both problems
Despite being a strong student in high school, Sydney Dodini struggled during her freshman year at Brigham Young University. She kept showing up late to lectures and found it difficult to focus during class. When she flew home in the spring, she asked her father, Aaron Dodini, a psychologist who specializes in ADHD testing, to give her a QbTest, an FDA-cleared ADHD diagnostic screening tool that can be done online. advertisement advertisement ADHD, or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, is one of the more common neurobehavioral disorders usually first diagnosed in childhood and which can continue into adulthood. Symptoms fall into three categories: inattention, manifesting in difficulty sustaining focus, staying on task, and staying organized; hyperactivity, including excessive fidgeting, extreme restlessness, even talking too much; and impulsivity, including difficulty with self-control, delaying gratification, and considering long-term … [Read more...] about An ADHD diagnosis can be expensive and inaccurate.
