Crunch time after all-night climate talks in Paris
A woman takes a picture of a globe at the COP21, the United Nations Climate Change Conference Monday, Dec. 7, 2015 in Le Bourget, north of Paris. The Paris conference is the 21st time world governments are meeting to seek a joint solution to climate change. The talks are focused on reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, primarily by shifting from oil, coal and gas to cleaner sources of energy. AP LE BOURGET — Weary envoys from 195 nations battling to forge an accord to save mankind from disastrous global warming emerged Thursday from all-night talks facing an imminent deadline with deal-breaking rows still unresolved. More than two decades of bruising international diplomacy have failed to produce such a pact, which would require the world’s energy system to cut back on burning coal, oil and gas that releases planet-warming gases. The 195-nation UN talks in the French capital have been billed as the last chance to avert worst-case-scenario climate … [Read more...] about Crunch time after all-night climate talks in Paris
Revealed: The Four Offers FC Barcelona Star Ousmane Dembele Has On The Table
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin FC Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele has four offers on the table to choose from this summer. On June 30, the €105mn signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 becomes one of football's biggest free agents when his contract expires. With just over a week to run, MAR AR CA in Spain say that the Frenchman has four paths he can head down while approaching the peak of his career at age 25. Despite rebuffing their previous contract renewal offers, Barca maintain interest in keeping their right winger. Or at least head coach Xavi Hernandez still wants to have him on board, reportedly urging Barca's higher-ups in recent days to launch a fresh assault that may convince the player to stay on at Camp Nou after all. Of the other clubs linked to Dembele, Chelsea is probably the likeliest to capture him. This is due to their manager Thomas Tuchel having once commanded the forward at Dortmund, with some outlets claiming that … [Read more...] about Revealed: The Four Offers FC Barcelona Star Ousmane Dembele Has On The Table
Rainforests Nations Want To Be Rewarded For Saving Their Trees — Now
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Honduran government is emphasizing clean energy and the environment when addressing poverty in the country. It is thus moving to protect its ecosystem and rainforest — a proposition that necessitates an $8 million increase in its environmental budget. Indeed, it covets its rainforest, which covers 56% of the country and houses 91 national parks and protected areas. But like a lot of emerging countries, it needs jobs and food. And therein is the paradox that Honduras and other rainforest nations in Asia and Africa face: the forests are the most effective way to suck heat-trapping emissions out of the air . But the same trees could also be harvested for wood, or the land could be farmed. Developed nations are pushing those countries to keep their trees. But they have value, the opportunity cost of what they would otherwise create. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Bonn, Germany spotlighted … [Read more...] about Rainforests Nations Want To Be Rewarded For Saving Their Trees — Now
Not All Carbon Credits Are Created Equal. Here’s What Companies Must Know
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Companies ranging from Xerox XRX Corp. to Walmart WMT to Delta Airlines are pledging to become net-zero — to offset their carbon emissions using energy efficiency, renewable energy, or carbon credits. But the market for carbon credits is varied, and not all credits are alike. What’s a company to do? If the Paris climate agreement has adopted the credits, they are safe for businesses to buy. That implies that they have been scrutinized and verified. Critically, it ensures that the money will be distributed to the rainforest nations preserving trees. Companies want to avoid purchasing proprietary credits that do not fully disclose how they dole out the money. Voluntary markets, generally, lack that oversight, tarnishing their image. Rainforest nations may end up getting pennies on the dollar. “If they are voluntary, nothing has been agreed to by the governments in need of the money,” says Federica Bietta, managing … [Read more...] about Not All Carbon Credits Are Created Equal. The Stark Difference Between Global Warming Of 1.5°C And 2.0°C
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin By Andrea Willige When it comes to climate, a seemingly small temperature change can make a world of difference – literally. Since the Industrial Revolution, global temperatures have been rising – by .07 degrees Celsius between 1880 and 1980, and by twice that rate over the last 40 years, due to human activity and the corresponding influx of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The result of our warming planet is extreme weather and unprecedented droughts and floods that harm people the world over. To stabilize the climate, the Paris Agreement aims to limit global temperature increases to well below 2°C (or 3.6 Fahrenheit) compared to pre-industrial levels. The treaty’s target is 1.5°C (or 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2050. Whether we reach 1.5°C or 2°C – a modest-sounding increase of .5°C degrees – has dramatic implications for the health of the planet and its inhabitants. Not surprisingly, the Paris … [Read more...] about The Stark Difference Between Global Warming Of 1.5°C And 2.0°C
