For seven happy years, from 2003 to 2010, I lived on Tran Hung Dao Street, Hanoi. Right behind our elegant French villa, within a few blocks, there was a food paradise. The area to the south was full of wonderful eating places, from grand restaurants to sidewalk cafés. I loved the oceanic taste of stir fried squid, the freshness of rice-paper spring rolls, the strength of beef in black pepper sauce… But perhaps my biggest favorite was bun cha, which we used to purchase from a little restaurant on Le Van Huu Street, to eat at home on Sundays. Renowned chef Anthony Bourdain once wrote: “You don’t have to go looking for great food in Vietnam. Great food finds you. It’s everywhere. In restaurants, cafes, little storefronts, in the streets; carried in makeshift portable kitchens on yokes borne by women vendors.” I was not at all surprised that the little restaurant on Le Van Huu Street where we used to buy our Sunday bun cha was the place where … [Read more...] about Fast food and its invasion of Vietnam’s culinary paradise
Many of the dealings in the so-called Paradise Papers – obtained by Süddeutsche Zeitung and shared by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists with media partners including Swedish television, the Guardian and the New York Times – are perfectly legal in the eyes of the law. But Skatteverket said its team of 300 workers tasked with locating international tax evaders were nevertheless looking into the 13.4 million files to find or rule out evidence of wrongdoing by Swedes. "We learned a lot from the work (with the Panama Papers in 2016) and it was then not a question about if there would be a new leak, but when. I think many more may come," the tax agency's international coordinator Margareta Nyström told Swedish public television SVT on Monday. Meanwhile Leif Östling, the chairman of Sweden's largest business federation, the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise (Svenskt näringsliv), ended up in hot water after the leak revealed he kept … [Read more...] about Swedes hit out at tax avoidance exposed in Paradise Papers leak
For all its sun, sand and craft beer, San Diego has pined to be great.About 150 years ago, city father Alonzo Horton called it “Heaven on Earth.” Around 1910, merchant and philanthropist George Marston dubbed it California’s Plymouth Rock. And in 1972 Mayor Pete Wilson named San Diego “America’s Finest City” despite the Republican national convention’s relocation to Miami Beach.A couple of out-of-town academics arrived soon after that and produced a visionary plan that’s been republished, translated into Spanish and augmented by seven new essays. It’s called “Temporary Paradise?” but unlike most planning documents, this one remains as relevant today as it was in 1974.Its authors, MIT’s Kevin Lynch and UC Berkeley’s Donald Appleyard lauded San Diego’s attributes that make it a paradise — the weather, the seaside setting. But they also but pointed out its shortcomings — traffic congestion, … [Read more...] about San Diego — a ‘temporary’ paradise?

caption A beach in the Seychelles. source Jean-Marie Hullot/Flickr A top secret meeting. A far-flung tropical archipelago. International political intrigue involving President Donald Trump. While it might sound like the tagline for an upcoming spy movie, these are the details of a newly disclosed meeting that took place in the Seychelles Islands between a Trump-linked private security entrepreneur, a Russian CEO, and a representative of the United Arab Emirates, according to The New York Times. Special counsel Robert Mueller has looked into the meeting in the Russia investigation, and has reportedly gathered evidence that its purpose was to establish a back-channel of communication between the incoming Trump administration and the Kremlin. But the Seychelles Islands where the meeting took place are themselves a fascinating yet little-known location. Here’s a look at why these beautiful islands off the coast of Africa were chosen to host … [Read more...] about Inside the tropical paradise that’s like something out of a James Bond movie, where a Trump associate had a secret meeting with a Russian and the Emirati crown prince
