GDEX falls into the red for the first time ever amid stiff competitions in 1QFY22
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (May 24): Logistics and express carrier provider GDEX Bhd posted a net loss of RM1.9 million in the first quarter ended March 31, 2022 (1QFY22), the first time since it was listed in 2005, amid tough competitions at home and higher operating costs. The group reported a 13.16% decline in revenue during the quarter to RM91.89 million, compared with RM105.81 million a year ago, amid lower contributions from its courier services segment. Geographically, Malaysia and Vietnam collectively made up the majority, or 99.6%, of GDEX's revenue, while Singapore contributed the balance 0.4%, according to GDEX. GDEX managing director Teong Teck Lean said in a statement accompanying the results that the group continues to face headwinds in Malaysia due to predatory pricing. "The competitive pricing environment is destructive, with some players offering free delivery service to grow their volume. However, this practice seems to be slowing down and we … [Read more...] about GDEX falls into the red for the first time ever amid stiff competitions in 1QFY22
Monkeypox can be contained if people recognise it, says WHO
- A + A ZURICH (May 24): The recent outbreak of monkeypox is unusual but is still containable, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). "It's not something we've seen over the last few years," said Sylvie Briand, director of the WHO's epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention department on Tuesday. She said it is still containable and that countries can cut the chain of transmission by raising awareness and getting people to recognise the symptoms early. The illness itself begins like many acute viral diseases — with high fever, muscle pain, and swollen lymph nodes. Those symptoms can be followed by a skin rash often starting in the face before spreading elsewhere and sometimes growing into fluid-containing pustules that form a scab. The illness usually lasts two to four weeks. Monkeypox, which has been afflicting developing countries for years, has spread across Europe and the US in recent days, leading to a total of 131 confirmed cases to date … [Read more...] about Monkeypox can be contained if people recognise it, says WHO
Here’s another troubling reason inflation will be hard to fight
London (CNN Business) One of the many buzzwords percolating around Davos this week is "fragmentation," the force economists there warned could have "devastating human consequences." By "fragmentation," they are referring to a breakdown of the kind of free-wheeling, border-crossing trade and investment that's defined the global economic order over the past three decades. It is a form of deglobalization — rebuilding fences around national or regional fiefdoms. "Fragmentation is the sense that we may be having economies protect themselves a little more domestically, and that could slow things down," Josh Lipsky, director of the Atlantic Council's GeoEconomics Center, told me. "And then it may make things more expensive in return." It's not a new issue, of course — supply-chain upheaval was turbocharged by the start of the pandemic more than two years ago — but the war in Ukraine, growing political divides and lingering trade disputes are renewing concerns … [Read more...] about Here’s another troubling reason inflation will be hard to fight
She thought a dark moment in her past was forgotten. Then she scanned her face online
By Rachel Metz , CNN Business Updated 1124 GMT (1924 HKT) May 24, 2022 (CNN Business) Cher Scarlett, a software engineer, has a history of being misidentified by face-scanning technology, including one instance that may have surfaced a distant ancestor in a photo. So when she was introduced to an online facial-recognition tool she hadn't heard of, she wanted to see whether it would mistake photos of her mom or daughter for her. On February 1, Scarlett uploaded some images of her teenage daughter and her mom to PimEyes , a facial-recognition website meant to be used to find pictures of yourself from around the web — ostensibly to help stamp out issues such as revenge porn and identity theft. She didn't get any images of herself in return — pictures of her daughter yielded other kids, she said, while one of her mom led to some pictures of her mother, plus images of other, similar-looking women. Anyone can use this powerful facial-recognition tool — and … [Read more...] about She thought a dark moment in her past was forgotten. Then she scanned her face online
Google’s new Street View camera is more portable (and looks weirdly cute)
(CNN Business) Since launching in five US cities in 2007, Google's Street View cars have been circling the globe, using roof-mounted cameras to map more than 10 million miles of imagery — pictures that have been stitched together to build a visual map of much of the world. Yet while these cameras have made it possible for Google to capture many far-flung places, they tend to be bulky, heavy, and require a bunch of computing power that has to be added on inside Street View cars. On Tuesday, Google unveiled a new Street View camera it thinks will make it a lot easier to take pictures of the world, particularly in remote spots such as small islands and mountain tops. The camera weighs 15 pounds (about a tenth the weight of the current camera plus all the electronics the existing one requires); is modular so it can be customized with different sensors such as lidar when needed; and can quickly be connected to the top of a car's roof rack without needing the car to be … [Read more...] about Google’s new Street View camera is more portable (and looks weirdly cute)
Reliability is key as F1 season takes another twist
FILE PHOTO: Formula One F1 – Spanish Grand Prix – Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain – May 22, 2022 Red Bull’s Max Verstappen celebrates after winning the race REUTERS/Albert Gea BARCELONA— Max Verstappen was 46 points behind Charles Leclerc after the first three races of the Formula One season and now, three races later, he is six ahead of his Ferrari rival and leading the championship. The fact that Red Bull’s reigning champion has won every race he has finished also emphasizes the importance of reliability in a season of major rule changes and rapid development. Leclerc took 71 of 78 available points in the first three races. He has scored 33 since then. Verstappen had 25 after round three in Australia and is now on 110, his tally boosted by an Imola sprint race that handed him eight extra points. Champions Mercedes were down, and about to be counted out as they wrestled with a bouncing car, and yet Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix suggested George Russell and … [Read more...] about Reliability is key as F1 season takes another twist
