Strong winds leave Phuket King’s Cup triple-champ beached

December 2, 2011 by thethaiger.com

PHUKET: Strong onshore winds last night left a three-time class champion in the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta stranded on the sand at Kata Beach. Matt Allen’s 44-foot Ichi Ban , on which he won the IRC 1 class at the Phuket King’s Cup last year, was left standing vertically in the sand after the tide ran out this morning. “It looks like the boat has not suffered any damage. It is pointing out to sea and should be able to safely sail way at high tide at about 3pm this afternoon,” a regatta organizer at the scene told the Phuket Gazette . Ichi Ban was one of the many yachts stranded by strong onshore winds during regatta last year. All were recovered safely. Serena And WNBA Show Its Possible For Gender Equality In Sports

February 4, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On Women’s Sports day, I reflected on the last 25 years where I have seen the struggle to promote gender equality in sports, seemingly to no avail. I recall representing Lisa Leslie, arguably the greatest WNBA player ever, and first women to dunk a basketball, in her footwear negotiations with Nike. Every year Nike would reduce the amount of money they were willing to pay her, despite her MVP status. The reasoning was that Nike discovered that male athletes were still driving the sales of the shoes anyway (girls looked up to the male athletes more because of the additional exposure and promotion that they received). When I asked for a “signature” shoe, Nike’s head of sports at the time, Ralph Green, told me: “girls don’t buy basketball shoes because of what WNBA players wear, they want to wear what Michael Jordan wears.” The reason is quite obvious: cultural bias. “Air” Jordan was flying through the air in Nike commercials … [Read more...] about Serena And WNBA Show Its Possible For Gender Equality In Sports

Phuket Youth Sailing Club stars in King’s Cup dinghy events

December 19, 2011 by thethaiger.com

PHUKET: A strong fleet of 34 Optimist and eight Lasers took part in the recent King’s Cup International Dinghy Regatta, with fifteen sailors from the Phuket Youth Sailing Club (PYSC) between the ages of seven and 15 who joined other sailors from Phuket, Phang Nga, Samui, Songkhla and Sattahip to take part in the three-day event. On day one, the course was set to challenge the youngster’s sailing skills by making them thread their way through moored boats off Kata Beach. With two races completed, race three got underway in disappointingly calm conditions. Shortly thereafter, the fleet was hit by a very strong squall bringing winds of up to 35 knots which caused many of the boats to capsize. The more experienced sailors enjoyed the extreme conditions and three Optimists finished in style with the PYSC’s Akapoj Kankaew posting his first win of the day. In the Laser Fleet, all the sailors finished the race with Patteera Mee-u-samsen winning the race to give her three wins for the … [Read more...] about Phuket Youth Sailing Club stars in King’s Cup dinghy events
