MANILA, Philippines — The NCAA will soon include 3x3 basketball, one of the fastest-rising sports in the country today, in its regular calendar. NCAA president Anthony Tamayo of Season 94 host University of Perpetual Help said the move to make 3x3 basketball a regular sport is gaining ground within the league’s Policy Board and Management Committee. “For Season 94, 3x3 basketball will be played as a special event,” said Tamayo. “We will tackle it in the next meeting and hopefully it will be included as regular event in the future because we feel 3x3 basketball is one sport Filipinos are good at.” This is the second season in a row that 3x3 basketball will be played in the NCAA. FRESNO, Calif.—A fading John Moralde knocked down Ismael Muwendo twice then withstood the Ugandan fighter’s final assault to prevail in their lightweight bout at Save Mart Center here on Saturday. Unleashing counter left hooks, Moralde floored Muwendo in the first round and in the end of the fifth to win by unanimous decision, 76-74, 76-74 and 77-73, in a supporting bout to the Jerwin Ancajas-Jonas Sultan world title fight. Moralde, 24, visibly exhausted in the last 3 rounds, rebounded from a bungled US debut last December and climbed to 20-1 with 10 knockouts. Muwendo, now fighting out of Minneapolis, Minn., suffered his first loss in 20 fights, 12 of those he won via knockout. UAAP: NU appoints veteran referee as volleyball commissioner
MANILA, Philippines -- National University (NU) on Thursday announced that it has appointed international referee Yul Benosa as the commissioner of the UAAP Season 81 volleyball tournament. An international volleyball referee since 2009, Benosa has officiated various tournaments such as the Asian Men’s Club Championships held in Manila in 2014 and the ASEAN University Games in Singapore in 2016. Benosa, who hails from Pangasinan, was the UAAP's chief referee from 2008 to 2018. Aside from officiating in the collegiate league, he has been serving as assistant tournament manager of the Palarong Pambansa volleyball tournaments since 2012. He is also a coaching clinician and volleyball event organizer for the Philippine Volleyball Federation and teaches senior high at the Pasay City North High School-Tramo Campus. The 12-year old Mojdeh broke a five-year old record after finishing two minutes and 22.69 seconds in the secondary girls’ 200m butterfly finals. Mojdeh, an international campaigner, erased the 2:25.21 record by Suzanne Vermon Himor in 2014.
