Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Big data and analytics player Palantir’s stock (NYSE: PLTR) has already lost about 21% of its value year-to-date in 2022, underperforming the S&P 500 which is down by about 6%. The stock also remains down by almost 45% from its November 2021 highs. While high-growth software stocks have seen a sell-off, due to the prospect of rising interest rates and the broader market rotation out of pandemic winners into real economy sectors, there are some stock-specific factors that are impacting Palantir, as well. For example, investors are likely a bit concerned about the slower growth at the company’s government business over Q3 2021 and also due to its growing dependence on the U.S. market for commercial revenue growth. However, we think that Palantir stock looks like a good pick at its current market price of about $15 per share. Despite the recent concerns, Palantir’s overall growth rate is likely to remain solid. Our online selves are not always our real selves, especially when work is involved. Whether we’re selecting the right headshot for LinkedIn or attempting to sound clever to peers on Twitter, everything that’s already confusing and shifty about internet identity is buttoned up in a suit that doesn’t quite fit. And the worst part is that as you attempt to score that next job, the recruiter you’re trying to impress might just be an automated piece of software, using an algorithm to sort your awkward suit-self onto a spreadsheet. advertisement advertisement But what if there were a way to fight back—at LinkedIn culture, at recruiting bots, at the pressure to be a so-called thought leader? That’s the vision of Deepwork by a publication called The Pudding . It’s a satirical but also functional website that offers working AI tools that will do anything from write a CV to generate a headshot to populate your Twitter feed with witticisms. The Keurig machine –that handy gadget that produces one perfectly portioned cup of coffee–has 37 patents. Two of those integral patents expire this September, opening the simple but legally exclusive technology behind K-Cup coffee pods to retailers that want to produce their own, cheaper versions. Keurig’s parent company, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, prepared a two-pronged defense: Partner with popular coffee companies (such as Folgers and Dunkin’ Donuts) to make branded K-Cups, and introduce the Vue, a new, fancy espresso machine that comes complete with a Starbucks alliance. To understand how important this is to Green Mountain–and how attractive it is to everyone else–just look at the rapid growth of single-serve revenue. advertisement So Long, Coffeepot 118M U.S. Homes 10.8M U.S. Homes With Keurig Brewers Brewing Is Cheap, Unless It’s By The Cup Folgers In A Cup 5 cents per cup 67 cents per cup Starbucks In A Bag 27 cents per cup 93 cents … [Read more...] about Why Big Coffee Is Betting On Single-Serve Cups
Eric Topol M.D., director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute and author of The Creative Destruction of Medicine , describes what’s next in the continuing saga of technology-based industry disruption as the great inflection of medicine . advertisement advertisement While moderating a California Innovation discussion for expediting drug discovery and cures, and as a long-time Silicon Valley participant, I couldn’t help but notice parallels in medical discovery to the evolution of the Internet as a platform. It appears that a key milestone igniting Topol’s predicted future is emerging–the formation of a Health Innovation Highway. The Health Innovation Highway has the potential to do for medicine what the Internet did for business. The widespread adoption of the Internet in the 1990s unleashed a flood of entrepreneurial activity by dramatically reducing the cost of innovating, launching, and growing a startup. Today we are experiencing … [Read more...] about A Look Around The Bend On The Health Innovation Highway
PHOTO BY BRIAN FINKE What chefs Michael Chernow and Daniel Holzman wanted when they opened their 39-seat New York eatery the Meatball Shop in 2010 was to create a comfortable local joint for Lower East Siders. What they got? A 150-person line waiting in the February freeze. The Meatball Shop was a bona fide hit, and that presented an unexpected dilemma: “Locals weren’t going to tolerate waits like that,” says Chernow. To keep hungry neighbors happy, he had hostesses take phone numbers and call folks when a table was ready. That plan worked but was inefficient–and didn’t keep patrons from pestering the hosts or dining elsewhere. advertisement advertisement Then, in the fall of 2011, Chernow got a cold call from Wes Adams, a designer, and Eric Eng, a developer, about an app they were launching. Called WaitAway , it allows hostesses to input a customer’s name and number into an iPad or laptop, which then sends a text when a table is ready.
