What should FAO’s new director general focus on?ROME: On June 23, 2019 Mr Qu Dongyu of China was elected as the new director general of the Food and Agriculture Organization. FAO is one of the largest UN specialized agencies with a budget for 2018-19 of $2.5 billion, offices in over 130 countries and more than 11,000 employees. Mr Qu takes over from José Graziano da Silva who has been in the post since 2012 and completes two terms in July 2019. Mr Qu has a doctorate in agricultural and environmental sciences from Wageningen Agricultural University in the Netherlands, and has held several senior positions including as vice president of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. His most recent job was that of vice minister of agriculture. He will take over his new position on Aug. 1, 2019. I happen to throw back on the report because judging from news accounts, majority of the attendees in the recently concluded 2nd Belt and Road Initiative Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing went home from the event carrying packages of grants, economic development assistance funds and business investments from Chinese entrepreneurs. President Duterte is said to have struck up deals with China’s business community amounting to $12.5 billion, thereby raising China’s investments and aid packages in the Philippines to $37 billion to date. The US has retained its spot as the most powerful country in the world in 2019 according to an annual ranking, followed closely by some of its closet allies and traditional adversaries. The US News and World Report rankings look at a country’s political and financial influences, as well as its international and alliances, the strength its military and how it acts as an international leader. The rankings come as part of US News and World Report’s “2019 Best Countries” ranking in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania, which surveyed more than 20,000 people on their opinions of 80 countries.
