June 26, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A fall in the price of solar glass and rising costs for raw materials have contributed to a warning of a drop in first-half profit at Xinyi Solar, one of the world’s largest suppliers of glass to the solar power industry. Profit is likely to drop by 33% to 43% from HK$3.07 billion a year earlier, based on preliminary five-month data, the company said in a statement Friday evening, Xinyi Solar, controlled by Chinese billionaire Lee Yin Yee, fell 3.5% in trading at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange to HK$12.66 at approximately 10 a.m. on Monday after the announcement; its shares have lost more than a fifth of their value in the past 12 months. The drop in profit is “primarily due to the decrease in the profitability of the solar glass business” owing to “around 10-20% decreases in the average market prices of solar glass products” along with “significant increases in the costs of raw materials and energy, such as soda … [Read more...] about China Billionaire Trio’s Xinyi Solar, Xinyi Glass Warn Of Profit Drop; Stocks Slide

August 1, 2017 by dailycaller.com

Thousands of ageing solar panels sited throughout China could trigger an environmental crisis over the next two decades, according to industry experts. China has more solar power plants than any other country, operating roughly twice as many solar panels as the U.S. with no plans on how to dispose of the old panels that break down. “It will explode with full force in two or three decades and wreck the environment, if the estimate is correct,” Tian Min, general manager of a Chinese recycling company, told The South China Morning Post . “This is a huge amount of waste and they are not easy to recycle.” There could be 20 million metric tons of solar panel waste, or 2,000 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower, by 2050 according to Lu Fang, the secretary general of solar power at the China Renewable Energy Society. The "special" OPD fee structure that has been doing rounds on social media. (Image credit: @gdalmiathinks/Twitter) Tired of patients looking their symptoms up on Google before consulting him, a doctor in India has designed a special fee structure for such people. A poster put up at the unidentified doctor's office lays down the OPD charges like this: If patients rely on the doctor's diagnosis and treatment, they have to pay only Rs 200. But, if patients insist on a different type of treatment after getting diagnosed by the doctor, the fee spikes to Rs 500. Moreover, if people who have looked up their symptoms on Google want to clear their doubts, they will be charged Rs 1,000. The fee climbs higher if the doctor is asked to suggest a course of treatment that the patients have diagnosed while surfing the internet. Doing so will cost them Rs 1,500. But, what takes the cake is the last category. If patients decide to look up their symptoms on the internet and decide to … [Read more...] about Googling symptoms when ill? Sonu Sood on Explurger app: “I always believe that I am an engineer first”

June 11, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Sonu Sood and Jitin Bhatia. A couple of years ago, Sonu Sood and his friend Jitin Bhatia asked a simple question: did any of their social media apps have a record of the places they had checked into, and uploaded photos of? When they couldn't find one, they decided to make their own app to do this: Explurger. Explurger - the name is a portmanteau of explore and urge - is a gamified, AI-powered app that allow users to connect and share moments. It also gives rewards, discounts, level-ups and creates travelogues. In an interview, Sonu Sood spoke about Explurger, putting India on the global map, his upcoming films, why the popularity of OTT is actually good for the film industry and more. Excerpts: How did you come up with Explurger? We all spend so much time on social media apps, and many times we feel that there are so many things that are missing there... We wanted to bring out a platform where, when you spend your time, it leads to your growth and it helps you get … [Read more...] about Sonu Sood on Explurger app: “I always believe that I am an engineer first”

Advancing cautiously

June 27, 2022 by www.bangkokpost.com

Asia needs good relations with both the US and China "as they play differing but important roles", says Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, governor of Penang state. SUPPLIED Asian economies are bouncing back amid the so-called Great Reset triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic. But a cautious mood prevails given the possible short-term risks of new waves of the virus, rising inflation and political instability. However, corruption remains one of the main challenges that Asian countries must address as they recover from the pandemic-hit downturn, experts say. Corruption is one of the three C's that pose challenges for the region. The other two are Capital -- given concerns that investment flows could decline -- and the Cost of living crisis as rising inflation affects countries globally, said Michael Yeoh, president of the Malaysian think tank KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific. "We've seen in many Asian countries, how corruption has affected economic growth and the need to enhance … [Read more...] about Advancing cautiously

Chinese firms are dominating key parts of Hong Kong’s economy

June 27, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (June 28): Half way to the point when Hong Kong will officially be enveloped by China, Beijing is not just calling the shots politically, but in vast swathes of the city’s US$344 billion economy. From the stock exchange to brokerages, construction projects to the retail sector, Chinese state-controlled firms are increasingly dominating, taking market share away from the local tycoons and British trading houses that thrived under the final decades of UK rule. Those behind the growing Chinese influence view Hong Kong’s economy as stagnant, slow to embrace the technology-driven, new economy industries that have been catalysts for growth on the mainland. Chinese enterprises have been handed more political power in the city, including a recent revamp of the electoral system that reduced the influence of local businesspeople and added greater representation for state-backed companies. “Hong Kong has come to a crucial crossroads,” said Simon Lee, a Hong Kong … [Read more...] about Chinese firms are dominating key parts of Hong Kong’s economy

La Niña seen worsening inflation woes in PH

June 27, 2022 by business.inquirer.net

The possibility that the La Niña phenomenon will linger until the end of the year may add to upward pressure on inflation in the Philippines, even as prices of basic commodities are seen starting to peak. The latest advisory from Climate Prediction Center (CPC) at the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows that the weather phenomenon, which brings above normal rainfall to the Philippines and threatens agricultural output, is favored to continue through the end of 2022. There is a 52-percent chance for a La Niña decrease [weakening] into the Northern Hemisphere late summer (July-September) before slightly increasing [strengthening] to 58 to 59 percent through the Northern Hemisphere fall and early winter,” the CPC said. This warning was raised as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said global output of paddy rice or palay was forecast at 694.3 million tons, 3 percent above the five-year average. Record outputs “Record or near-record … [Read more...] about La Niña seen worsening inflation woes in PH
