We’ve see it many times before. The Denver Broncos score a touchdown and out runs the team mascot, Thunder. But what does Thunder, an Arabian horse, do during the rest of the game? Is Thunder a boy or a girl? Who is Thunder’s favorite player? It has to be Von Miller, right? At a recent home game I spent some time chatting with Thunder, HIS rider Annie Judge and owner Sharon Magness Blake to find out what a typical game is like for the Broncos mascot. It turns out that the current Thunder is of legal voting age. The 18-year old is actually the third Thunder. The first died at age 27, the second is retired and is 25. Thunder IV is currently in training and 11 years old. Before a game starts, Thunder delivers the game ball to officials or a special guest of the team. Then he leads the team out during player introductions. During a typical game Thunder, along with his rider and owner, hang out by the south stands, close to the goal posts. They are there for the entire game, … [Read more...] about A game in the life of Denver Broncos mascot, Thunder

Denver Broncos commit faux pas with choice of chile
Ever since I read that 505 Southwestern was named a partner of the Denver Broncos, I’ve been stewing about it. I’m not trying to start World War III here, but I don’t see why the Broncos partnered with a brand that favors New Mexico’s Hatch chiles over one that sells products made from Colorado’s famous Pueblo chiles.Don’t get me wrong. I like 505 Southwestern Flame Roasted Green Chile. I’m just disappointed that the team didn’t choose a chile product from a Colorado grower or producer.“I suspect there was a nice chunk of money that had something to do with the choice,” said Shane Milberger, owner of Milberger Farms in Pueblo and a founder of the Pueblo Chile Growers Association, a group of farmers in Pueblo growing the authentic Pueblo chile. “The Pueblo chile has a better flavor profile than Hatch chiles. I’m not a football fan, but other growers are Bronco fans and didn’t like that our chiles were not … [Read more...] about Denver Broncos commit faux pas with choice of chile

The Denver Broncos mascot’s $23 million Silverthorne ranch is for sale
At the time Sharon Magness Blake’s first husband, Tele-Communications Inc. founder Bob Magness, died in 1996, she estimates they had a ranch with about 900 Arabian horses. She continued racing for about five years after her husband’s death, she says, “but then it became overwhelming.” Magness Blake began to sell the horses off, and by the time she began looking for a new ranch in 2002 with her future husband Ernie Blake, “I only had about 30 horses,” she says. Of the steeds she kept, one was of particular importance: Thunder, the official mascot of the Denver Broncos. Since the early 1990s, she and her husband had been the owner of the pro football mascot. Unofficially, Magness Blake says, there are actually four Thunders. The first died seven years ago; the second is retired; the third is on active duty” he leads the team onto the field before each game, and every time they score he carries a flag down the field” and the fourth is in … [Read more...] about The Denver Broncos mascot’s $23 million Silverthorne ranch is for sale
Wife of Denver Broncos owner says she also has Alzheimer’s
DENVER — The wife of Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen says she has Alzheimer's, a disease which led her husband to give up control of the team four years ago. In an announcement Wednesday, Annabel Bowlen said she wanted to make her diagnosis public right away to help raise awareness about others dealing with it. Annabel Bowlen says there's no reason for those with Alzheimer's to completely give up their daily activities. Based on her experience with her husband, she says she knows there will be both good and bad days ahead. Her five children say they have been inspired by the strength and courage she has shown while supporting their father. They say they're confident she will bring the same grace and determination to her fight. … [Read more...] about Wife of Denver Broncos owner says she also has Alzheimer’s
