When San Miguel Corp. entered into fixed-price agreements to supply electricity to Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) consumers in 2019, little did it know that unforeseen geopolitical forces would cause it to lose billions of pesos on its Sual and Ilijan power plants. For one, the price of coal which powers Sual stood between $60 and $65 per metric ton at the time the contract was entered into, and was expected to stay in that range for the next 10 years. But no one could have foreseen that Indonesia would impose a coal export ban in January of this year, soon to be followed by a spike in energy prices globally due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine the following month. As a result, coal prices skyrocketed to over $400 per MT at present. To make matters worse, the Malampaya gas field which supplies the natural gas for the Ilijan plant was “derated,” resulting in a drop in supply. This forced San Miguel to source fuel from overseas which, as one would expect, is also substantially more … [Read more...] about BIZ BUZZ: Seeking ‘temporary relief’

SMC first half profits declined 33%
Conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC) said higher selling prices and volumes pushed sales higher in the first half of 2022 but profits were pressured by the weakening Philippine peso and pandemic tax adjustments. The food, beverage, energy and infrastructure giant said net income from January to June sank 33 percent to P19.8 billion amid foreign exchange “movements” and normalized tax expenses from last year’s effectivity of the Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises Act. SMC’s total revenues jumped 73 percent to P711.4 billion while operating income rose 41 percent to P85.9 billion. SMC said earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization increased 13 percent to P91.2 billion. The food and beverage segment also sustained revenue and profit growth while the power subsidiary saw earnings drop due to … [Read more...] about SMC first half profits declined 33%
Global energy crisis may hit PH LNG plans
The Philippines wants to import its first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) this year, as LNG infrastructure proposals surge. However, the country is entering the global LNG market at a time of extreme uncertainty. Supply is constrained due partly to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and prices continue to hit record highs. Inability to buy LNG at competitive rates could leave new terminals and LNG-fired power plants unused and stranded. A history of setbacks. According to the Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development, the Philippines has 36.5 million tons per annum of LNG import terminal capacity under development, along with 29.9 gigawatts (GW) of gas-fired power projects. San Miguel Corp. alone accounts for 14.1 GW of that proposed capacity. Although projects on the pipeline have grown dramatically since 2016, LNG projects have been repeatedly canceled since 2003. More recently, LNG companies have been very active due to the depletion of the Malampaya gas field, the … [Read more...] about Global energy crisis may hit PH LNG plans
