Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The American worker is getting lazier. Or at least, that’s what a quick look at recent productivity numbers might make you think. Q1 productivity dropped for American workers while wages actually increased – workers are getting paid more to get less done. Is it laziness though? As tempting as the assertion might be, there’s a lot more to explain recent decreases in productivity. Yes, there’s an incredibly tight labor environment. With unemployment near all time lows and multiple job openings for every person looking for work it definitely seems like workers have all the leverage. They can take it easy on the job and know they won’t get fired, and even if they do, who cares? There’s a position open for them across the street. This comfort factor is definitely part of the productivity narrative, but it’s not the only driver. There’s more to the story if we really want to understand the productivity and wage situation in … [Read more...] about Do Less & Earn More: Declining American Productivity

A US$60 bil crypto collapse reveals a new kind of bank run
- A + A NEW YORK (May 19): Last fall, on the advice of a friend, Odosa Iyamuosa invested his life savings of US$4,000 in a cryptocurrency called Luna. The 28-year-old, who lives in Abuja, Nigeria, researched the coin himself online, and what he found seemed promising. Luna’s price was soaring, thanks to the success of another coin with which it was deeply intertwined, TerraUSD. Some of the crypto industry’s biggest names had already invested, including Galaxy Digital Holdings Ltd, the high-frequency-trading firm Jump Trading, and venture investment arms of the exchanges Coinbase Global Inc and Binance. For Iyamuosa, it seemed like his best hope to get out of Abuja, where he says many jobs pay just US$2 a day, or less. He’d scraped together a little money selling knockoff Nike and Adidas sneakers to local buyers he found on Instagram. He wanted to increase his savings to US$16,000 and enroll in a data-analytics programme at a college in Toronto so he could get a job … [Read more...] about A US$60 bil crypto collapse reveals a new kind of bank run

Why Tesla Could Become The Netflix Of The EV Market
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Netflix NFLX was a pioneer in the online streaming industry. This year, it became clear that the incumbents had finally caught up. What’s more, Netflix is not poised — as it was in 2007 — to enjoy rapid upward growth by creating a new industry that builds on its strengths. Now — after reporting a drop in subscribers — its stock trades 74% below its October 2021 peak. Could the same thing happen to Tesla? An MIT professor and a J.D. Power & Associates executive told me that Tesla — whose stock sits 43% below its high — will face considerable challenges from incumbents. However, by improving its vehicle design, offering a broader product selection, boosting manufacturing quality, and upgrading its customer service, they could envision Tesla sustaining its rapid growth by capturing more mainstream customers. How Netflix Lost Its Edge For years, Netflix defied analysts who said that the likes of Disney, … [Read more...] about Why Tesla Could Become The Netflix Of The EV Market

30 Quotes on Trust That Will Make You Think
Trust is built and maintained by many small actions over time. Trust is not a matter of technique, tricks, or tools but of character. We are trusted because of our way of being, not because of our polished exteriors or our expertly crafted communications. Here are some quotes that may be useful to consider as you think about the role of trust in your life and leadership: 1. "It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it." -- Warren Buffett 2. "We need people in our lives with whom we can be as open as possible. To have real conversations with people may seem like such a simple, obvious suggestion, but it involves courage and risk." -- Thomas Moore 3. "The glue that holds all relationships together--including the relationship between the leader and the led--is trust, and trust is based on integrity." -- Brian Tracy 4. "Trust is like blood pressure. It's silent, vital to good health, and if abused it can be deadly." … [Read more...] about 30 Quotes on Trust That Will Make You Think
10 Small Skills That Can Add Up to Huge Success
Learn to innovate like Elon Musk , hoop like LeBron James, or act like Meryl Streep and you will, barring spectacularly bad luck, end up successful. But achieving this level of skill is, of course, beyond most of us. Helpfully, though, there is another way for those not gifted with world-class talent to achieve impressive success. What's true for money is true for skills. Einstein is often quoted as saying compound interest is the " most powerful force in the universe ." That story is likely apocryphal , but the underlying truth behind the sentiment is undeniable. Modest investments with small rates of return can add up to huge payoffs over time (just like small debts at usurious rates can ruin your life). And what's true for money is true for skills, VC Morgan Housel argued on his consistently thought-provoking blog recently. "It's tempting to want to find the one big skill that will set you apart. But most incredible things come from compounding, and … [Read more...] about 10 Small Skills That Can Add Up to Huge Success
The long struggle to bring a supermarket to a nearly all-Black Buffalo neighborhood
New York (CNN Business) In August of 2001, more than 100 people gathered on the East Side of Buffalo, New York. The setting, an empty lot in a nearly all-Black neighborhood of this upstate New York city, drew prominent visitors. They included Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer, the two US senators from the state at the time; Anthony Masiello, then the mayor of Buffalo; Byron Brown, the current mayor of the city; and other officials. The 90-minute event featured 18 speakers and was described as "Buffalo's longest-ever news conference." The group was there to announce that Tops Friendly Markets, a leading Northeast grocery chain, would be built on the site — located where an A&P supermarket stood in the 1960s when the neighborhood was a hub of economic activity for Buffalo's Black community. The announcement marked the culmination of more than a decade of activism by community advocates and others to address food inequities on Buffalo's East … [Read more...] about The long struggle to bring a supermarket to a nearly all-Black Buffalo neighborhood
Biden Administration Updates Eligibility Guidance For Expanded Student Loan Forgiveness Program
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Biden Administration has updated key eligibility guidance for an expanded student loan forgiveness program for public service workers. Here’s what it means for borrowers. Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Limited Waiver Program The updated guidance pertains to a temporary expansion of relief under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, which the Biden administration first announced last October. PSLF can provide federal student loan borrowers with complete loan forgiveness after 120 qualifying payments — equivalent to 10 years, if those payments are made consecutively. Under the original program rules, however, PSLF was limited to borrowers who paid Direct federal student loans under specific repayment plans tied to their income. The complicated rules, and poor communication of the program requirements by loan servicers, led to a high rejection rate. Borrowers could consolidate non-Direct federal … [Read more...] about Biden Administration Updates Eligibility Guidance For Expanded Student Loan Forgiveness Program
