6:00 a.m. Your alarm blinks and screeches to life; reluctantly, you stretch out a weary arm and fumble the snooze button intermittently for the next thirty minutes. Colman Domingo, Charles Busch, films galore and more at Denver’s CinemaQ Film Festival
Colman Domingo was taking a break from a feature film shoot in upstate New York to talk about his life and career, and the upcoming CinemaQ Film Festival at Denver’s Sie FilmCenter, at which he will be given the inaugural LaBahn Ikon Film Award. His life, while not an open book, he has generously shared in the terrific solo play “A Boy and His Soul,” about growing up in Philadelphia to the sounds of his mother and stepfather’s soul music LP collection. Not long ago, he talked to GQ magazine about how he met his now-husband, Raul Domingo (nee Aktanov). (If you’re hankering for an authentic version of the cute rom-com meeting, look it up.) As for his career, the multi-hyphenate has already had a doozy of a ride. Well-known — and oft reviled — for his turn as Victor Strand in AMC’s zombie-apocalypse show, “Fear of the Walking Dead,” Domingo also played Ralph Abernathy in “Selma” and trombonist Cutler in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” He was a scene-stealer as X, a pimp in Janicza Bravo’s … [Read more...] about Colman Domingo, Charles Busch, films galore and more at Denver’s CinemaQ Film Festival

How to Get Everything You Want. Seriously
Getting what you want in your career and in life isn't as difficult as it may seem. I mean it. I've been very fortunate, both professionally and personally, and along the way learned seven key ways to help make it happen. In essence, I work to put others first, and to be more likeable, to end up with what I want in everything I do. I'll be writing about this in far more detail in my third book next year. In the meantime, here's a sneak peak at how you can be successful in everything you do, too: Listen First and Never Stop Listening Listening is the single-most important skill in professional and personal relationships. Ernest Hemingway said, "When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen." It's sad, but true: Most people have their own agenda and are too busy talking (or waiting to talk) to listen to you. So here's the paradox: If you, unlike most people, can truly listen with empathy, then people will like you--and eventually help you get what you … [Read more...] about How to Get Everything You Want. Every Celebrities’ Favorite Home: The Irresistible Hotel Bel-Air
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There are places celebrities go to be seen, and there are rare places where celebrities go not to be seen. There is only one place, though, that has elegantly enveloped celebrities into its 12 acre seemingly secret garden for more than 70 years: The Hotel Bel-Air. The Prince of Wales supposedly said, “I slept better in the Presidential Suite of the Bel Air than in any other hotel in the world. Tom Cruise once remarked: “I’ve lived at Hotel Bel-Air, and I always feel very comfortable there.” What is it about this classic hotel, complete with gliding swans, no less, that endures as Hollywood’s haven? On a recent stay at the Hotel Bel-Air, I think I uncovered it. The top quality required to endure as a celebrity sanctuary: discretion by design. While located only a mile or so off of Sunset Blvd, the drive to the Hotel Bel-Air is nondescript along a narrow road marked by colossal hedges and fancy gates that shroud the mansions … [Read more...] about Every Celebrities’ Favorite Home: The Irresistible Hotel Bel-Air

‘Vision Of Self’ Jewelry Helps People Manifest Their Dreams
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Manifesting your dreams is no longer just an airy-fairy Disneyland wish. Since Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret documentary hit the mainstream in 2008, we’ve seen an entire cottage industry that has popped up based around the premise of the film (and now bestselling book), which is basically, that you can make your dreams come true by picturing them in your mind, first and foremost, and expecting the best to happen. It’s called the law of attraction, even Oprah Winfrey counts herself a fan. “See yourself living in abundance, and you will attract it,” said Bob Proctor, one of the authors featured in The Secret . “It works every time with every person.” Celebrities have spoken publicly about how they used the law of attraction to make their dreams come true, like Issa Rae, who told Vanity Fair that she created a vision board that almost predicted her career success in TV, while model Ashley Graham explained she is … [Read more...] about ‘Vision Of Self’ Jewelry Helps People Manifest Their Dreams
How Mark Rober became the Willy Wonka of engineering
This story is part of Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business 2022 . Explore the full list of innovators who broke through this year—and had an impact on the world around us. advertisement advertisement Picture the coolest, most ridiculously awesome room you can imagine. Maybe it’s got a golf simulator and a billiards table, or radiant-heat floors, or polychromatic India Mahdavi furniture, or meticulously cultivated hygge. Whatever it is, whatever you’re envisioning, it would be even better if it had a secret door leading to another room. And of course, a secret door has to reveal itself in some sick way, like how you run through a wall to get to track 9 3⁄4, or wade through a coat closet to get to Narnia, or turn a bronze eagle on a bookshelf, or push the correct button on a soda machine. It can’t just be a switch labeled secret door, though that’d be kind of funny. That kind of meta humor would be very on-brand for Mark Rober, except … [Read more...] about How Mark Rober became the Willy Wonka of engineering
