Two years in the making, these jeans are the antidote to fast fashion
When Levi Strauss invented the blue jean in 1873, it was a feat of design. Made from copper rivet-reinforced denim, they could withstand years of manual labor, while still projecting an air of effortless cool. But today, jeans are just another example of disposable fast fashion. Brands like Shein and H&M crank out cheap, trendy pairs every season, designed to be thrown out within months—contributing to the 2 billion pairs churned out every year. advertisement advertisement Asket , a Swedish startup founded in 2015, is on a mission to find out. While fashion brands typically design new collections every season, Asket (the Swedish term for “ascetic”) has created one permanent collection of 30 classic, versatile garments that the company promises will last years of wear and never be phased out. Sabahans lose appeal to reinstate lawsuit against Abdul Hadi
- A + A PUTRAJAYA (Aug 16): The Court of Appeal here on Tuesday (Aug 16) dismissed an appeal by two Sabahans to reinstate a lawsuit against PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang for allegedly making seditious remarks against Christians. A three-member bench led by judge Datuk Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera said the court agreed with the High Court that the suit, which was filed by Maklin Masiau and Lawrence Jomiji Kinsil @ Maximilhian, was wholly unsustainable and ought to be struck out. He said the two declaratory orders sought by the two Sabahans were to ask the court to make a finding that Abdul Hadi had in fact committed an offence of sedition. He said such declarations would not serve any purpose to the appellants (Maklim and Lawrence), as they admitted that they were not compelling the attorney general (AG) to prosecute Abdul Hadi, or to compel the prime minister to dismiss Abdul Hadi from his public office. The judge said Maklim and Lawrence had alleged that … [Read more...] about Sabahans lose appeal to reinstate lawsuit against Abdul Hadi

Nancy Pelosi (Photo by Reuters) - A + A US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is the latest trigger point to strain US-China ties again. Calling the visit a provocative move by the US, China fired ballistic missiles and deployed fighter jets and warships in military drills that encircled Taiwan. The US’ and China’s next course of action will be closely monitored to gauge potential signs of further escalation in the trade war between the two countries. Walmart sees smaller profit drop as discounts draw inflation-hit shoppers
- A + A BENGALURU/NEW YORK (Aug 16): Walmart Inc nudged up its annual profit forecast on Tuesday, partly reversing a hefty cut less than a month ago, as discounts to clear excess merchandise and lower fuel prices helped it beat expectations for quarterly sales. The stock, which has fallen over 8% this year, rose 3.7% in pre-market trading. Shares of rivals Target Corp, Costco, and Best Buy also climbed on the news, while futures for the blue-chip Dow index cut losses. Walmart said it now expected fiscal 2023 adjusted earnings per share to fall 9%-11%. Last month, the top US retailer spooked markets across the globe when it forecast a drop of 11%-13% — down from previous guidance for a 1% fall — and warned consumers were pulling back on discretionary purchases at a far greater pace than feared as soaring inflation hit their spending power. That forced Walmart to make steep price cuts on items such as apparel to try to reduce more than US$61 billion (RM272.45 … [Read more...] about Walmart sees smaller profit drop as discounts draw inflation-hit shoppers
