How algorithm-based hiring tools can increase disability discrimination

· January 14, 2021 ·

Even a résumé screening tool—which might seem like a straightforward way to sift through job applications—can mirror existing pitfalls in the hiring process and inadvertently weed out candidates with disabilities. In 2019, just over 19% of people with disabilities were employed, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as compared to an employment rate of 66% among people without disabilities; nearly a third of disabled workers had only part-time employment. “People with disabilities [are] disproportionately less likely to be employed at all,” Brown says. “We’re more likely to be precariously employed, and we’re more likely to have longer gaps in our work history. I know many people in my life who would be considered highly qualified and highly skilled, who could work a regular work schedule but have months to years long gaps on their résumé—because after a temporary job ended, they were unable to be hired because … [Read more...] about How algorithm-based hiring tools can increase disability discrimination

7 daily productivity hacks to help you work smarter in 2021

· January 11, 2021 ·

As far as working with such a setup goes, I’d recommend having your laptop on the desk in front of you and keeping correspondence stuff on the laptop screen: email, Slack, chat, and the like. Then use the big screen for productivity stuff: web, apps, presentations, and documents. The horizontal resolution you gain lets you keep multiple windows open and side by side at once, while the vertical resolution is great for displaying long web pages and documents. … [Read more...] about 7 daily productivity hacks to help you work smarter in 2021

We’re in the midst of a caregiving crisis. Here’s how Biden may address it

· January 11, 2021 ·

It’s little surprise, then, that many voters are clamoring for a proposal like the one Biden has put forth. His team has projected the plan would augment overall employment by five million, by adding millions of new jobs in the caregiving sector and empowering other women to resume working or enter the labor force. In a recent poll conducted by the Service Employees International Union and the National Domestic Workers Alliance, 88% of respondents—more than 40% of whom were women of color—support Biden’s plan, as reported by The 19th. And while there’s been ample discussion of the childcare issues wrought by the pandemic, a major concern for many people surveyed was long-term care for the elderly. … [Read more...] about We’re in the midst of a caregiving crisis.
