More Controversy In The Bellwether Opioid Trial
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In late April, I discussed what I felt were serious problems with Judge Dan Aaron Polster’s handling of the mass tort trial pitting two Ohio counties against Walmart WMT , Walgreens WBA , and CVS. (link here ). Since then, the jury findings against the three defendants seems to have been interpreted in peculiar ways by Judge Polster, given routine understandings of the tort concept of joint and several liability. Last week a planned two-week bench trial began in Judge Polster’s chambers, the purpose of which was to determine the amount that each of the three defendants would have to pay the counties, over a five year period. [Many other defendants have settled, but the three giant pharmacy operators strenuously deny that they wrongly caused any damage.] Daniel Fisher over at Legal Newsline recently described the bench trial. In brief, based on Fisher’s description, here are the relevant issues as I see them: … [Read more...] about More Controversy In The Bellwether Opioid Trial
States prepare for summer launch of new 988 suicide prevention number
(CNN) This summer, every state will be rolling out 988 as the new National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number to call for mental health crises -- similar to how people can call 911 for medical emergencies. But in some states, questions remain around funding the transition, staffing call centers and having response teams ready. The transition to 988 is "not optional," according to the US Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. No more than half of states have enacted or introduced legislation in preparation for 988's debut, scheduled for July 16, according to data from the National Academy for State Health Policy . "Beginning July 16 of this year, all 988 calls will be routed to the national suicide hotline, so there isn't a need for state legislation to make that critical step happen," Jodi Manz, project director of behavioral health, aging and disability at the health policy group, … [Read more...] about States prepare for summer launch of new 988 suicide prevention number
Subway shooting suspect denied bail on federal terrorism-related charge
(CNN) The man arrested after a roughly 30-hour manhunt in the shooting of 10 people on a subway train in Brooklyn was denied bail at his initial court appearance Thursday. Frank James, 62, did not enter a plea on charges of violating a law that prohibits terrorist and violent attacks against mass transportation . In court, Assistant US Attorney Sara Winik described the attack as "premeditated and carefully planned" as prosecutors requested James remain behind bars. Defense attorneys told the federal judge they consented to him remaining in custody for now but may press again for bail later. The lawyers further asked for a psychiatric evaluation to determine James' medical needs. Wearing a khaki prison uniform and blue surgical mask, James spoke only once, to acknowledge he had seen the complaint. Outside the courthouse, his attorney, Mia Eisner-Grynberg, cautioned against a rush to judgment. "We are all still learning about what happened on that train," she said. "What … [Read more...] about Subway shooting suspect denied bail on federal terrorism-related charge
Eating as a family helps maintain healthy weight
For people obliged to follow a special diet or those who have undergone bariatric surgery, taking part in meals together as a family, rather than alone in front of a computer or television, could help maintain balanced eating habits, a new study suggests. Published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior , the study also indicates that patients were more likely to have family meals when they had good communication and moral support from their loved ones. The study involved 259 patients, all parents of a child between the ages of two and 18, who were registered at accredited weight management and bariatric surgery centres at Ohio State University and Wake Forest University in the United States. The patients were asked questions about family meal practices, as well as parent-child discussions on specific topics such as diet, weight and body image. According to the survey, families with younger children were more likely to eat dinner and breakfast together. The … [Read more...] about Eating as a family helps maintain healthy weight
Meet The Women Who May Make History In The Midterms
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Women are poised to achieve new firsts in the 2022 midterm elections in November, potentially building on the history-making wave of lawmakers who won office in 2018, when Congress welcomed the first Muslim and first Native American congresswomen, and Arizona and Tennessee sent women to the Senate for the first time. Here are some big potential firsts to watch out for this year. Florida Could Elect Its First Black Female Senator Val Demings, a rising star in Democratic politics, is making a long-shot bid for Republican Marco Rubio’s Senate seat in a state that’s grown increasingly red. The state’s elections division reported 5.14 million active registered Republicans at the end of March compared with 5.03 million Democrats. What’s more, Demings has consistently trailed Rubio in the polls . Whether or not she beats the odds, Demings’ race is one Democrats are keeping a close eye on to gauge how much to invest in … [Read more...] about Meet The Women Who May Make History In The Midterms
Sen. Blumenthal’s Family Splurged On Intel Stock Before He Voted For A Massive Subsidy Bill
Democratic Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal recently disclosed that an investment fund managed by his wife’s family bought between $1 million and $2 million in tech company stocks, including shares in Intel. Blumenthal’s disclosure came three weeks before a Senate hearing where Intel’s CEO backed legislation handing billions in subsidies to the semiconductor industry. Five days after the hearing, Blumenthal voted in favor of the America COMPETES Act, which grants $52 billion in subsidies to the semiconductor industry. Democratic Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal disclosed in early March that an investment fund managed by his wife’s family purchased between $250,000 and $500,000 worth of Intel stock. A little over three weeks later, he voted for legislation handing billions in subsidies to semiconductor manufacturers that could benefit Intel. The senator’s actions seem to indicate a conflict of interest, congressional watchdogs told The Daily Caller News Foundation. … [Read more...] about Sen. Trump Endorses Hard-Right Doug Mastriano In Pennsylvania Governor Race
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Former President Donald Trump said Saturday morning he's backing Pennsylvania state Sen. Doug Mastriano (R) in the state's gubernatorial contest, a candidate some Pennsylvania Republican officials reportedly worry is too extreme to win in the general election. Key Facts Mastriano was one of the most prominent figures in Pennsylvania peddling false claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election, with Trump saying in a statement: "There is no one in Pennsylvania who has done more, or fought harder, for Election Integrity than State Senator Doug Mastriano." Mastriano traveled to Washington, D.C., for Trump's "Stop the Steal" rally on January 6, 2021, but claims he left before riotous Trump supporters stormed the Capitol. Mastriano has surged in recent polls ahead of next week's GOP primary—the latest RealClearPolitics polling average has him at 25.7% support, more than 10 percentage … [Read more...] about Trump Endorses Hard-Right Doug Mastriano In Pennsylvania Governor Race
In early primaries, voters favor polling places over mail
ATLANTA — The great vote-by-mail wave appears to be receding just as quickly as it arrived. After tens of millions of people in the United States opted for mail ballots during the pandemic election of 2020, voters in early primary states are returning in droves to in-person voting this year. In Georgia, one of the mostly hotly contested states, about 85,000 voters had requested mail ballots for the May 24 primary, as of Thursday. That is a dramatic decrease from the nearly 1 million who cast mail ballots in the state’s 2020 primary at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. The trend was similar in Ohio, Indiana and West Virginia, which held primaries this month; comparisons were not available for Nebraska, another early primary state. A step back in mail balloting was expected given easing concerns about COVID-19, but some election officials and voting experts had predicted that far more voters would seek out the convenience of mail voting once they experienced it. … [Read more...] about In early primaries, voters favor polling places over mail
