Representative image Some corporate leaders are grasping at whatever they can to get back to the way things were. But they might find themselves fighting a culture shift beyond their control. As long as work has existed, employers have tried to size up their employees’ commitment to their jobs. Are you on the fast track? The mommy track? The leadership track? Now, if some corporate leaders have their way, there will be a new test for workplace devotion — and anyone who opts for remote work gets a failing grade. But can C.E.O.s really claw their way back to 2019? This past week, Elon Musk issued an ultimatum to Tesla and SpaceX employees requiring them to return to the office for at least 40 hours per week — or lose their jobs. Mr. Musk, who is known for having camped out for weeks at Tesla factories, thinks remote work is an affront to productivity and personal commitment. Last month, he praised Chinese workers for “burning the 3 a.m. oil,” comparing them with … [Read more...] about The Office Monsters Are Trying to Claw Their Way Back to 2019

Paytm to allow ‘work from home’ for these roles. See CEO Vijay Sharma’s tweet
Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma At a time when companies across the world are ordering employees to return to office, Paytm’s Vijay Shekhar Sharma is expounding the benefits of working from home. On Thursday, the Paytm chief announced that his digital payments platform will allow employees in tech, business and product roles to work from home or any location of their choice. This is a continuation of the remote working movement that began during the coronavirus pandemic. “We at Paytm allow you to work from home/anywhere for product, tech and business roles,” Vijay Shekhar Sharma wrote on Twitter alongside an animated video which contrasts the hectic routine of an office-going employee with the leisurely pace that is the luxury of those working from home. The Paytm founder and CEO encouraged job-seekers to visit the careers section of the Paytm website to look for current openings and “join the team that has revolutionised India’s payments for good.” We @Paytm … [Read more...] about Paytm to allow ‘work from home’ for these roles. Friday Box Office: ‘Elvis’ Tops With $13 Million, ‘Black Phone’ Grabs $10 Million
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis topped the domestic box office on Friday with a solid $12.7 million. That includes $3.7 million in Thursday (and week-of) previews. If the film plays over the weekend like Dexter Fletcher’s Rocketman (which opened with $25.7 million from a $9.17 million Friday in June of 2019), then the $85 million rock biopic earns an impressive $35 million in its Fri-Sun debut. That may be optimistic since the Paramount-released, crowd-pleasing Elton John flick was R-rated. However, Taron Egerton’s Rocketman was also an hour shorter than Warner Bros. Discovery’s Austin Butler and Tom Hanks-starring 160-minute epic. With strong reviews and solid buzz, I’d expect the Austin Butler/Tom Hanks flick with around $30 million and duking it out with Top Gun: Maverick for the weekend crown. One year ago, we were all mourning the $11.8 million opening weekend of In the Heights (and celebrating the $70 million opening … [Read more...] about Friday Box Office: ‘Elvis’ Tops With $13 Million, ‘Black Phone’ Grabs $10 Million
How to Radically Improve Your Work Life Without Quitting Your Job
When your job is a depressing slog, sometimes the best thing to do is simply take the leap and quit (even if you don't have something else immediately lined up) . But other times that's just lunacy. Maybe you have no financial cushion. Maybe your job has some redeeming qualities, or there is more learning to be wrung out of it. Maybe you just need to hold out until your other ducks are in a row. Whatever the reason, for lots of us the reality is that work kind of sucks but we can't quit right now. So is there nothing left to do but white knuckle your way through it? Jobcrafting to the rescue? The answer might not be sheer grit (supplemented by occasional glances at your less-than-impressive bank balance), but something called jobcrafting. Coined by researchers out of Yale and other institutions and embraced by the likes of Google, the term refers to the process workers use to subtly shift their jobs away from their grimmer aspects and toward something more enjoyable … [Read more...] about How to Radically Improve Your Work Life Without Quitting Your Job
The war in Ukraine hasn’t ended. Here’s how these founders continue to build their businesses
In those first few fraught hours of February 24th, after Russian forces invaded Ukraine, Anastasiia Smyk, CEO and co-founder of aviation software startup Input Soft , recalls being in a state of shock and incredulity. She was in Kyiv at the time, but her 11-strong team was scattered around the country. advertisement advertisement “The first week we were just thinking about how to survive at a human level,” says the 25-year-old entrepreneur. “So we decided to rent a house for our team in the Carpathian mountains, in the [safer] western part of Ukraine, and told them they could go there with their families to wait until we knew more about what was happening. Some of them went. Others were unable to get out.” One of those left behind was the startup’s accountant, whose home town of Kherson, in southern Ukraine, has been under Russian occupation since early March. Why Marc Jacobs and Ohio State both fought to trademark the word ‘the’
The is one of the most common words in the English language. But two separate entities want consumers to associate them with the word. advertisement advertisement Fashion designer Marc Jacobs and Ohio State University separately filed applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2019 to trademark “the,” which would allow them to emblazon it on merchandise like T-shirts and bags—and prohibit anyone else from doing so. This week, the USPTO granted the university the trademark, and while it may seem ridiculous to try to trademark such a common word, experts say it’s actually a clever bit of branding. In some ways, the entire concept of sticking “THE” on a shirt began as a joke. Back in 1986, Ohio State University wanted to move away from the acronym OSU because it’s also used by Oregon State University and Oklahoma State University, which creates a lot of confusion. So the school tried to rebrand itself as The Ohio State University in a … [Read more...] about Why Marc Jacobs and Ohio State both fought to trademark the word ‘the’
Amid startup layoffs, larger job market remains buoyant across sectors
The larger job market in India remains buoyant across sectors – even amid layoffs by a clutch of startups in recent months – and employees will generally continue to call the shots through FY23. “We see FY23 to remain an employees’ market with some amount of adjustments. Employees still have the bargaining power, opportunities and enjoy the benefit of demand,” said RP Yadav, chairman of Genius Consultants, a staffing and human resource company. While information technology and IT-enabled services will continue recruiting, e-commerce, logistics and export-oriented sectors including textiles and leather goods are doing well in terms of hiring. The consumer goods sector will increasingly do well, as will the retail and hospitality segment, according to staffing firms, HR experts and talent managers. The near-normal level of economic activity in retail and hospitality is indicative of a revival in these sectors after a prolonged phase of weakness due to the pandemic and offers a … [Read more...] about Amid startup layoffs, larger job market remains buoyant across sectors

Palace sees ‘politicization’ in ICC prober’s push vs Duterte
Martin Andanar Malacañang on Saturday said the “politicization that has infiltrated” the International Criminal Court (ICC) would be exposed if it allowed its Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan to resume the investigation of President Duterte’s bloody war on drugs. Acting presidential spokesperson Martin Andanar said the Philippine government was “exasperated” over Khan’s application to the tribunal’s Pre-Trial Chamber for authority to resume the probe even though it was the first time that the ICC prosecutor has made the request. Khan requested the authority to resume investigation on Friday after he found “no indication” that the Philippine government had investigated or was investigating police and government leadership conduct in the bloody war on drugs as the administration had promised when it asked that the probe be deferred. Khan’s office suspended its inquiry in November last year. Andanar insisted that the Duterte administration had been transparent in addressing the … [Read more...] about Palace sees ‘politicization’ in ICC prober’s push vs Duterte
