US labour market hot, but declining profits cast shadow over economy

May 27, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A WASHINGTON (May 26): The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week as the labour market remains tight amid strong demand for workers, despite rising interest rates and tightening financial conditions. But the outlook for the economy is uncertain, with other data on Thursday showing corporate profits falling across the board in the first quarter. Some economists believe the erosion of profits and falling share prices could force companies to pause hiring or start laying off workers. Several retailers, including Walmart Inc have lowered their full-year earnings forecasts, citing high inflation. Snap, the parent of Snapchat, issued a profit warning this week, sparking a sell-off of social media stocks. "The biggest expense for most companies is labor always," said Christopher Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS in New York. "High-flying tech companies have seen their share prices plummet which will force … [Read more...] about US labour market hot, but declining profits cast shadow over economy

PHUKET: Do what you love and make money doing it – how’s that for a business plan? That is exactly what Sky Club Asia co-owners Mark Silverberg and Paul Derstoff did when they turned their passion into a prospering business. Did their leap of faith pay off? One of the things that Mark Silverberg brought with him when he moved to Thailand was passion – a passion for flying. He used to go paragliding in mountainous Mexico before getting licensed as a paramotor instructor in the United States. Once in Thailand, he continued flying in his free time… and making wings during working hours. “For the first few years in Thailand I worked as a project manager for a factory making gliders,” he explains. “Through that, I connected myself to a lot of people in the world of paragliding. “I met some people who fly and discovered that Thailand is really a flight friendly country. U.S. confirms 9 monkeypox cases

May 27, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

LOS ANGELES, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The United States has confirmed nine monkeypox cases across seven states, said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday. "These cases were suspected by local clinicians. They were identified by local laboratories and triggered local public health action to help with treatment and management of any potential contacts," CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said at a press briefing. The nine cases have been identified in California, Florida, Massachusetts, New York, Utah, Virginia and Washington state. Some of the nine cases have a recent history of international travel to areas with active monkeypox outbreaks, but others do not, Walensky said. Officials expect more cases to be diagnosed as the CDC has urged doctors and the public to be on the lookout for symptoms. "We shouldn't be surprised to see more cases reported in the United States in the upcoming days. It's actually a sign that Americans are remaining vigilant, and … [Read more...] about U.S. confirms 9 monkeypox cases

The Business Case For Nurturing Mental Health Awareness In And Outside Of The Workplace

May 25, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The month of May is a time of renewal and nurturing new growth. Nowhere is that more obvious than on farms and fields of Nebraska, as another growing season begins. May is also Mental Health Awareness month, which you may be surprised to learn has been observed since 1949. It was established by the National Alliance on Mental Illness to fight the stigma, educate the public and advocate for policies that support people with mental illness and their families. An argument can be made that at no time has the need been greater than now to bring awareness—both in and outside of the workplace—to mental health. Data compiled by the Pew Charitable Trusts indicates that more than 47,000 people die by suicide each year in the United States, making it the 12 th leading cause of death in the country. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a 25% increase in mental health disorders … [Read more...] about The Business Case For Nurturing Mental Health Awareness In And Outside Of The Workplace
