Ken Burns And Ewers Brothers Spotlight Youth Mental Illness In New Documentary
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Youth mental illness has reached crisis levels in America. The percentage of adolescents who have experienced at least one major depressive episode increased by 60 percent from 2007 to 2019. Filmmaker Ken Burns has executive produced a powerful new two-part documentary film on this subject. Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness will air on June 27 and 28 at 9:00 pm ET on PBS and will be available for streaming on the PBS App. The film was directed and edited by Burns’ long-time colleagues Erik Ewers and Christopher Ewers. Box Office: Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Flies Past $1 Billion Worldwide
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Paramount and Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick earned another $30.5 million (-31%) in its fifth weekend of domestic release. That put the film back in the top slot for the weekend, a remarkable achievement in any era let alone our frontloaded, opening weekend-centric theatrical environment and with two solid openers on its tail. That fifth-weekend gross is the second-biggest such fifth-weekend gross ( American Sniper didn’t expand into wide release until its fourth weekend) between Titanic ($30 million in 1998) and Avatar ($42 million in 2010). It also puts its domestic total at $521.723 million. With a new overseas total (it was, again, the top movie overseas too dropping just 26%) of $487 million, Tom Cruise’s $170 million legacy sequel has now earned $1.005 billion worldwide. Yes, the Joseph Kosinski-directed flick just cracked $1 billion worldwide. That’s miracle number one. The film now ranks 15th on the all-time … [Read more...] about Box Office: Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Flies Past $1 Billion Worldwide
Weekend Box Office: ‘Lightyear’ Falls 65% As ‘Jurassic World 3’ Tops $300 Million
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In box office holdover news not related to Top Gun: Maverick , Universal and Amblin’s Jurassic World Dominion continued to play like the Tomorrow Never Dies of summer 2022 (pulling in terrific grosses even while being overshadowed by a zeitgeist-dominating blockbuster). The $185 million dino threequel earned another $26.4 million (-55%) to bring its domestic total to $302.775 million in 17 days. The drop is close enough to Fallen Kingdom (-53% for a $28 million third-weekend gross) to presume that audiences mostly like it at least as much as the last one, even if it’ll have to settle for a “mere” $350-$375 million domestic finish. Colin Trevorrow and Emily Carmichael’s franchise caper earned $42.9 million overseas for a new $443 million foreign and $746.6 million worldwide cume. It might not crack $1 billion, especially with China delivering half of what it did for the last two films ($227 million and $267 million), … [Read more...] about Weekend Box Office: ‘Lightyear’ Falls 65% As ‘Jurassic World 3’ Tops $300 Million
I spent six weeks living in A24-world. Here’s what happened
What makes A24 a cultural powerhouse is not that it released a film last spring in which an inter-dimensional assassin impales himself on an Auditor of the Month trophy, inexplicably shaped like a certain sex toy, although it most certainly did. It’s not that most cinephiles would immediately guess A24 as the company who put out that film, Everything Everywhere All at Once , even if its logo didn’t appear before the credits, although they probably would. No, what makes A24 a steady, sturdy phenomenon is that it started selling $60 designer candle replicas of that unlikely trophy just after the movie’s early-June digital release. advertisement advertisement Whether enough fans purchase the item—a collaboration with Brooklyn-based design studio, Joya —to justify its overhead cost is incidental. Everything Everywhere is now A24’s biggest hit ever , its $89 million box-office haul rendering the digital release a victory lap. The very existence … [Read more...] about I spent six weeks living in A24-world. Here’s what happened

When in Rome, Drink Like A Roman
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Go off the beaten path and drink local with the locals Like all major European capitals, Rome’s touristy neighborhoods are hard to avoid or, sometimes, resist. After a journey of missed connections, jumbled travel directions and mangled language if you’re not an Italian speaker, it’s tempting to fall into a neighborhood like Trastevere, where English is widely spoken and familiar menu items can entice you to give in and settle for something comfortable. But, don’t. If you want to eat and drink like a Roman, get off the beaten track. Just across the river, the adjoining historically working-class neighborhoods of Testaccio and Ostiense have bloomed in the past decade, becoming destinations for more authentic eating and drinking. They’re no secret to the well-traveled set or frequent visitors to Rome, but you’ll see few fanny-packers, selfie sticks and white sneakers here. Take the subway ( Metropolitana ) to the … [Read more...] about When in Rome, Drink Like A Roman
