Ewan McGregor is back for a six-episode "Star Wars" limited series, set in between the events of the prequel trilogy and the original "Star Wars" LOS ANGELES - When Ewan McGregor first played a lightsaber-wielding Jedi hero in the much-maligned "Star Wars" prequel trilogy, he didn't feel much love from the fans. Initial audience excitement about returning to a galaxy far, far away in 1999's "The Phantom Menace" was quickly doused by the prequels' corny dialogue, arcane inter-galactic politics and Jar Jar Binks. But as he steps back into his role for Disney+ series "Obi-Wan Kenobi," out next Friday, McGregor says he has been pleasantly surprised by a major re-evaluation of the prequels, particularly among younger viewers. "One of the difficult things about being in the prequels was that when they came out, they were not seemingly well received," McGregor told a virtual press conference Thursday. "Because there was no social media, there was no direct avenue to the fans at the … [Read more...] about McGregor return to ‘Star Wars’ inspired by love for ‘difficult’ prequels

Nerdle Promises To Be More Than Just Another Wordle Clone
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Last October there were just around 90 or so people playing Wordle, the web-based word game that was developed by Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle. It quickly grew in popularity as users began to share their results on Twitter and other social platforms. That attracted interest from The New York Times Company, which purchased the game in January 2022 for an undisclosed seven-figure sum. Soon after came the wave of clones. While many lack the originality of the original Wordle , one that now stands out is also seeing its own meteoric rise. Nerdle , a numerical-based viral puzzle game, was created by British data scientist Richard Mann after his 14-year-old daughter said she wished there was a version of Wordle for "math nerds." The game's development has also been a true family affair. Daughter Imogen created the design of the logo and the creative for the visual layout, while Mann's 17-year-old son Alex … [Read more...] about Nerdle Promises To Be More Than Just Another Wordle Clone
Hire Clones of Your Best Performers: Performance Benchmarking
I come from engineering and manufacturing. In other words, I'm literal. And so, when I first began recruiting, I took a very face-value approach. I walked the manufacturing or warehouse floor, found the gaps, and observed the people doing similar work quite well. That's all I needed for a job description; that's all I needed for an interview. Today, I'd call this performance benchmarking. Back then, I called it focusing on the 'doing,' not the 'having.' And all these years later I still think it's the best approach to recruiting: Figure out what the best performers are doing differently, and hire people with a proven track record of doing the same. Degrees and skill sets matter far less than an ability to deliver results. It sounds so simple, yet few leaders or recruiters take this systematic approach to hiring . Here are four case studies to illustrate my point -- real-life examples of clients who have mismatched job descriptions to necessary deliverables so … [Read more...] about Hire Clones of Your Best Performers: Performance Benchmarking

$100,000 Wine Gamble Turned Into 100-Point Scores From Top Wine Critics
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sitting on the back porch drinking a beautiful glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, the sunset painted the sky with colors of saffron and gold; there, a veteran wine producer in Napa Valley took in the recent catastrophe that destroyed so much of his community while he contemplated the luck of no loss of human life in the disaster, and less importantly, that five of his best barrels of wine survived. All of a sudden the song "That Old Black Magic" started to play in his head, and he knew "Black Magic" would be the perfect name for those special barrels of wine as it was a "black moment" for his winery as they lost a lot of wine yet at the same time those barrels have an "aura of real magic". That moment happened after the 2014 massive 6.0-magnitude Napa Valley earthquake that violently destroyed wineries, structures and catapulted people out of their beds around 3 am. The victims were randomly selected as "some wineries lost … [Read more...] about $100,000 Wine Gamble Turned Into 100-Point Scores From Top Wine Critics
