Lindsey Vonn Conquers The World’s ‘Most Notorious’ Downhill—In The Dark
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The word in 2019 was that Lindsey Vonn, the four-time USA Olympian and winner of 82 World Cup victories, had retired from competition. But even in retirement, Vonn is always moving. But late this week in Austria, Vonn conquered another huge feat. On Thursday evening, Vonn became the first woman to ski the legendary Streif in Kitzbühel, Austria , a 3,312-meter pass that is known as the most notorious downhill course in the world. And on top of that, Vonn is the first ever to ski the course at night. Nicknamed the Mausefalle or “The Mousetrap” by fellow former professional skier Toni Sailer, the course, which starts at a height of 1,665 meters with an 860-meter vertical drop, has been likened to a jump into the unknown, even when undertaken in daylight. “Only when you ski the Streif are you a real downhiller, ” Vonn said Thursday. France Travel: 19 January Strikes Could Be The Biggest In Decades
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin France's notorious yellow vest protesters are back—but this time the whole country appears to be behind them, and any upcoming travel plans could be seriously impacted. The French might have a reputation for going on strike, but for the first time in 12 years, everyone is proposing to strike next Thursday 19 January, against President Macron's plan to reform the pension system—meaning any travel you had planned will be heavily affected and everything from schools, petrol stations and trains will be closed or out of service. Before Covid, the weekly Saturday protests across France against President Macron's proposed pension reform and the huge disparity in wealth across the country were starting to seem like a regular part of the landscape. However, the pension reform was a key part of President Macron's manifesto when he was … [Read more...] about France Travel: 19 January Strikes Could Be The Biggest In Decades
Inmate Deaths, Threat Of Federal Takeover Will Determine The Fate Of Rikers Island
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin By Alan J. Krawitz Rikers Island jail is waging its own war. At issue is whether a federal receiver takes the reins of the jail from New York City's control. The next hearing on Rikers' fate is in April. However, on Nov. 17, a federal judge declined the request from lawyers, criminal-justice advocates and family members of inmates for a third party to try and reform the notoriously dangerous facility. Judge Laura Taylor Swain agreed to allow NYC's Department of Corrections, run by Commissioner Louis Molina, to try and improve the jail despite an independent monitor's report that found conditions "dangerously unsafe" for both inmates and staff. The embattled facility is located on an island in the East River between Queens and the Bronx. "We don't need the federal government to run our city, we can fix these problems," New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at a recent news conference from City Hall. Green hydrogen: Why low-carbon fuels are not benefiting from high fossil fuel prices
The number and scale of projects using and making hydrogen, a gas that releases energy when burned without emitting carbon dioxide, is rapidly growing. If its construction goes to plan, a Euro 2.5 billion (GBP 2.18 billion) undersea pipeline will convey green hydrogen from Spain to France from 2030. In the US, some power stations are being upgraded to allow hydrogen to be blended with fossil gas, and the Norwegian oil company Equinor is teaming up with Thermal SSE to build a 1,800 megawatt (MW) “blue hydrogen power plant in Britain. Meanwhile, China unveiled a plan in March which includes deploying 50,000 hydrogen vehicles by 2025 and early December saw the first hydrogen-fuelled tractors and forklifts leave the assembly line at a new plant in Guangdong province. Hydrogen is produced in multiple ways. A colour spectrum is used to render it simple.
