PM Prayut announces Thailand will fully reopen within 120 days
In a speech this evening, PM Prayut Chan-o-cha announced that Thailand must reopen in 120 days, which would be October 14, despite slow vaccine rollout and risk of increased Covid-19 outbreaks. The speech seemed to mark a shift from trying to eradicated Covid-19 in Thailand through controlling the spread and vaccinating the population to an acceptance of the virus’s long-term presence and balancing the risks with the need to move forward. “We have to come to terms that it [Covid-19] will continue to be around in the world and in Thailand for some time. We cannot wait for a time when everyone is fully vaccinated with 2 shots to open the country or for when the world is free of the virus. We must be ready to live with some risk and just try to keep it at a manageable level, and let people go back to being able to earn a living.” PM Prayut lauded the progress in vaccination procurement, manufacturing, and distributing to the population, highlighting the negotiations with 6 suppliers … [Read more...] about PM Prayut announces Thailand will fully reopen within 120 days

Greeley man gets 120 years in prison for 16 charges related to drug trafficking organization
A judge Monday sentenced a 49-year-old Greeley man to 120 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections for 16 drug charges related to his involvement in a large-scale and long-running drug trafficking organization. Luke Braziel, 49, appeared in person Monday afternoon with defense attorney Stephanie Stout for a sentencing hearing before Weld Judge Julie Hoskins. Braziel’s case dates back to 2019 when the Weld County Drug Task Force started an investigation into a major drug trafficking organization operating in Weld County. The investigation led to the arrest of multiple people. Braziel — who has a criminal history relating to drugs dating back to 1998 — and other members of his organization distributed a total of 28 pounds of crystal methamphetamine and heroin into the county, according to Greeley police. The task force learned that Braziel distributed drugs from his residence in the 1800 block of 7th Avenue in Greeley. Bryde’s whale found dead at Bangkok’s Bang Khun Thian coast
The death of bruised Bryde’s whale washed ashore at the Bang Khun Thian coast in Bangkok, near the mouth of the Chao Phraya river on Friday, still remains a mystery. Investigating officers spotted a bruise on the mammal’s belly but couldn’t conclude the cause of death. The owner of a nearby restaurant informed Thai media that local fishermen saw the body of a floating whale on Bang Khun Thian coast on Friday evening. The next day the body was found washed up in a mangrove forest at the border of Bangkok and Samut Sakhon province. An officer from the Marine and Coastal Resources Research Department, Surasak Thongsookdee, arrived at the scene Saturday with a team of vets and collected meat samples for further investigation. The vet team acknowledged the bruise on its belly but were unsure whether it was caused before or after the whale had died. The officer added that the whale’s bones would be kept at the Marine and Coastal Resources Research & Development Institute in … [Read more...] about Bryde’s whale found dead at Bangkok’s Bang Khun Thian coast

Malaysia rules out curbs on cooking oil exports, minister says
Zuraida: So far, we have no worries because we definitely have no shortages at all. - A + A (May 24): Malaysia, the world’s second-biggest palm oil producer, has ruled out curtailing cooking oil exports as it has enough supplies to meet local demand and will instead focus on targeting subsidies to ensure it benefits the most needy consumers. “So far, we have no worries because we definitely have no shortages at all,” Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin said in an interview Tuesday (May 24). “Most of the time we export more than half of what we produce, and we still have an excess to export,” she said from her office in the administrative capital Putrajaya. The nation aims to fill the gap in the edible oil market caused by the Ukraine war, as well Indonesia’s export curbs on palm oil, Zuraida said. She forecasts Malaysia’s palm oil production may rebound to 23 million to 25 million tonnes in 2022, versus last year’s 18.1 … [Read more...] about Malaysia rules out curbs on cooking oil exports, minister says

She thought a dark moment in her past was forgotten. Then she scanned her face online
By Rachel Metz , CNN Business Updated 1124 GMT (1924 HKT) May 24, 2022 (CNN Business) Cher Scarlett, a software engineer, has a history of being misidentified by face-scanning technology, including one instance that may have surfaced a distant ancestor in a photo. So when she was introduced to an online facial-recognition tool she hadn't heard of, she wanted to see whether it would mistake photos of her mom or daughter for her. On February 1, Scarlett uploaded some images of her teenage daughter and her mom to PimEyes , a facial-recognition website meant to be used to find pictures of yourself from around the web — ostensibly to help stamp out issues such as revenge porn and identity theft. She didn't get any images of herself in return — pictures of her daughter yielded other kids, she said, while one of her mom led to some pictures of her mother, plus images of other, similar-looking women. Anyone can use this powerful facial-recognition tool — and … [Read more...] about She thought a dark moment in her past was forgotten. Then she scanned her face online
