Amid concerns North Korea could be preparing to conduct its first nuclear test in five years, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and U.S. President Joe Biden agreed in May to deploy more U.S. weapons if it was necessary to deter the North. The North’s state news agency KCNA said on Saturday a number of workers’ organizations had held meetings to “vow revenge on the U.S. imperialists,” blaming the United States for starting the 1950-1953 Korean War. Thai AirAsia X to honour paid bookings
A file photo shows a Thai AirAsia X A330-300 jet taking off from Don Mueang airport. Thai AirAsia X is committing to paying a refund in full to all 6,500 paid bookings during the two years of the pandemic, even as the airline is undergoing bankruptcy. Tassapon Bijleveld, director at Thai AirAsia X, said after a Thai bankruptcy court accepted its petition on May 17, the court will hear from creditors in case there are any objections. The airline reportedly has accumulated debt of around 25 billion baht, with the major proportion attributed to aircraft leasing contracts. The airline previously had 15 jets in the pre-pandemic years, but downsized to five aircraft this year. If creditors vote in favour of the bankruptcy petition, the airline could continue with its rehabilitation plan, which it hopes will be completed by the third quarter next year, said Mr Tassapon. The 6,500 bookings made prior to the bankruptcy process and new bookings from May 17 will not be affected by … [Read more...] about Thai AirAsia X to honour paid bookings

S.Korean won breaches 1,300-mark for first time in 13 years
- A + A SEOUL (June 23): South Korea's won fell below the psychological threshold of 1,300 per U.S. dollar for the first time in 13 years, amid global economic recession worries and the dollar's strength, but traders said market sentiment was relatively calm. The won weakened as much as 0.42% in onshore spot trade on Thursday to touch the lowest since July 14, 2009, at 1,302.8 per dollar. The 1,300-mark, a level seen during the 2008-2009 global financial crisis and 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis, has been considered for years as a sign of major economic risks. However, domestic foreign exchange dealers said it was different this time, as changing supply-demand landscapes in recent years, such as increasing overseas investment, should also be a factor influencing the price in addition to the dollar's strength at two-decade highs. The won has weakened more than 8% this year, following an 8.6% drop in 2021 that was the fastest annual fall since 2008. Last year, … [Read more...] about S.Korean won breaches 1,300-mark for first time in 13 years

[JOINT PRESS CORPS] President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol's transition team Thursday criticized the appointment earlier this week of a friend of President Moon Jae-in's brother as CEO of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME). The Blue House shot back, expressing "surprise" that the incoming government "covets" the DSME position, which it said should be filled by qualified individuals. Park Doo-seon, vice president of DSME, was appointed president and CEO of the shipbuilder at an annual general meeting Monday. He will serve a three-year term. DSME, one of Korea's three leading shipbuilders, is considered a quasi-public company as its largest shareholder is the state-run Korea Development Bank (KDB), which owns a 55.7 percent stake. Yoon's team pointed out … [Read more...] about Moon, Yoon clash on DSME CEO appointment
Afghanistan ends search for survivors of earthquake that killed 1,000
KABUL (Reuters) -Authorities in Afghanistan have ended the search for survivors of an earthquake that killed 1,000 people, a senior official said on Friday, adding that supplies of medicine and other critical aid were inadequate. About 2,000 people were injured and 10,000 houses were partially or completely destroyed in Wednesday's earthquake in a remote area near the border with Pakistan, Mohammad Nassim Haqqani, a spokesperson for the disaster ministry, told Reuters. "The search operation has finished, 1,000 are dead and the injured are around 2,000, both serious and superficial injuries," Haqqani said. He did not elaborate on why the search for survivors was being called off after some 48 hours. Survivors have been pulled from the rubble of other earthquakes after considerably more time. The 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck about 160 km (100 miles) southeast of Kabul, in a region of arid mountains dotted with small settlements that has often been at the centre of … [Read more...] about Afghanistan ends search for survivors of earthquake that killed 1,000
