Crunch time after all-night climate talks in Paris

December 10, 2015 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

A woman takes a picture of a globe at the COP21, the United Nations Climate Change Conference Monday, Dec. 7, 2015 in Le Bourget, north of Paris. The Paris conference is the 21st time world governments are meeting to seek a joint solution to climate change. The talks are focused on reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, primarily by shifting from oil, coal and gas to cleaner sources of energy. AP LE BOURGET — Weary envoys from 195 nations battling to forge an accord to save mankind from disastrous global warming emerged Thursday from all-night talks facing an imminent deadline with deal-breaking rows still unresolved. More than two decades of bruising international diplomacy have failed to produce such a pact, which would require the world’s energy system to cut back on burning coal, oil and gas that releases planet-warming gases. The 195-nation UN talks in the French capital have been billed as the last chance to avert worst-case-scenario climate … [Read more...] about Crunch time after all-night climate talks in Paris

India At G7 | Expectations from and support for India will rise rather than fall

June 24, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

(Representative image: Shutterstock) We need to look at India’s presence in the forthcoming G7 summit on June 26-27 beyond the positive hypes and negative hopes set by domestic constituencies and global narrative peddlers. On its own, there is nothing exclusive about this invitation. Apart from India, the German presidency has invited Argentina, Indonesia, Senegal, and South Africa to the summit to be held at Schloss Elmau, Bavaria. Yet, if some folks take Western pressures seriously (we don’t), India is expected to be on the back foot because it did not toe the G7 line and stood its own on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The dominant narrative today is that India needs to be punished. So far gone are these voices that global news agencies have forgotten basic journalism. They are mixing wishful thinking with facts, using the convenience of unnamed sources as cover. When they report that “ Germany is debating whether to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Group of … [Read more...] about India At G7 | Expectations from and support for India will rise rather than fall

UK PM Johnson may face new ouster effort after election loss

June 25, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (June 25): UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who survived a confidence vote just two weeks ago, is facing fresh threats to his leadership after his Conservative Party lost two key parliamentary seats, according to reports. Tory rebels seeking his ouster want to scrap the party’s rule that prevents another leadership poll from taking place for a year, the Times and the Telegraph reported. They’re organising to take over an internal panel of backbenchers known as the 1922 Committee that sets party rules on confidence votes, according to the reports. Andrew Bridgen, a Tory lawmaker, told GB News on Friday (June 24) that he would stand for the election to the executive of the 1922 Committee to try and change the rules. Nominations open next week and the vote could be the following week, he said. The rules can be altered at any time by a simple majority of the typically 18-member executive, according to the Telegraph. Ukrainian city falls to Russia in one of war’s bloodiest fights

June 26, 2022 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

Ukrainian service members walk in the industrial area of the city of Sievierodonetsk, as Russia’s attack on Ukraine continues, Ukraine June 20, 2022. (REUTERS/Oleksandr Ratushniak/File Photo) KYIV/POKROVSK, Ukraine — Russian forces have fully occupied Sievierodonetsk, the mayor of the eastern Ukrainian city said on Saturday, confirming Kyiv’s biggest battlefield setback for more than a month, after weeks of some of the war’s bloodiest fighting. Ukraine called its retreat from the city a “tactical withdrawal” to fight from higher ground in Lysychansk on the opposite bank of the Siverskyi Donets river. Pro-Russian separatists said Moscow’s forces were now attacking Lysychansk. The fall of Sievierodonetsk — once home to more than 100,000 people, now a wasteland — was Russia’s biggest victory since capturing the port of Mariupol last month. It transforms the battlefield in the east after weeks in which Moscow’s huge advantage in firepower had yielded only slow gains. Russia will … [Read more...] about Ukrainian city falls to Russia in one of war’s bloodiest fights

Beer giant to trial completely recyclable fibre beer bottle across Europe

June 25, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

Beer giant Carlsberg is set to conduct its biggest trial in a bid to launch its fibre beer bottle across Europe. Eight thousand of the group's new bottles - all completely recyclable - will be sampled by customers in eight markets across the continent including the UK, Poland and France. The bottle has been made with wood-based fibre shell and contains a lining made of a plant-based Polyethylene Furanoate (PEF) polymer. Carlsberg said the materials can all be recycled and claimed it will retain the beer's "taste and fizziness" against the same product in glass bottles. Carslberg's new offering could potentially stay colder for longer compared to its glass and can counterparts too due to the fibre exterior, the company claimed. Stephane Munch, vice president for group development at Carlsberg, described the product as a "great achievement" and said the company will continue to work with partners Avantium, who specialise in renewable chemistry and developed the polymer lining, … [Read more...] about Beer giant to trial completely recyclable fibre beer bottle across Europe

How Metro Brands’ massive offline presence is helping its online journey

June 25, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Metro Brands, according to the company’s Draft Red Herring Prospectus filed before launching its IPO last year, operated about 598 exclusive and multi-brand outlets across 136 cities in the country. Footwear retailer Metro Brands, which sells footwear and accessories under in-house brands such as Metro Shoes, Mochi, Walkway, and partner brands such as Crocs, embarked on an omni-channel journey during the pandemic, which led to exponential surge in its sales. According to the company, it currently draws about 10 percent of its sales from digital channels, such as marketplaces, compared to 2 percent in the pre-pandemic period. Alisha Malik, president, e-commerce and marketing and a member of the promoter-founder family, in a conversation with Anuradha Sengupta, said two years of pandemic made people digitally savvy and pushed the growth of the channel. “The pandemic also taught people how to understand what they really want in terms of the comfort of their footwear and how they … [Read more...] about How Metro Brands’ massive offline presence is helping its online journey

Amid startup layoffs, larger job market remains buoyant across sectors

June 23, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

The larger job market in India remains buoyant across sectors – even amid layoffs by a clutch of startups in recent months – and employees will generally continue to call the shots through FY23. “We see FY23 to remain an employees’ market with some amount of adjustments. Employees still have the bargaining power, opportunities and enjoy the benefit of demand,” said RP Yadav, chairman of Genius Consultants, a staffing and human resource company. While information technology and IT-enabled services will continue recruiting, e-commerce, logistics and export-oriented sectors including textiles and leather goods are doing well in terms of hiring. The consumer goods sector will increasingly do well, as will the retail and hospitality segment, according to staffing firms, HR experts and talent managers. The near-normal level of economic activity in retail and hospitality is indicative of a revival in these sectors after a prolonged phase of weakness due to the pandemic and offers a … [Read more...] about Amid startup layoffs, larger job market remains buoyant across sectors

Digital lenders seek 6-month extension, meeting with RBI, on PPI-based lending

June 25, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Representative Image After multiple rounds of deliberations, the Digital Lenders Association of India (DLAI) has decided to seek a six-month extension and meetings with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) representatives on the regulator's recent clarification barring several fintechs from facilitating credit through Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPIs) of their partner banks. While a final representation is yet to be sent to the regulator, Moneycontrol could gain access to the draft letter of June 24 addressed to the Department of Payment and Settlement Systems and the Department of Regulation within the RBI. In the letter, DLAI argued that business models that involve lending through prepaid instruments like wallets and prepaid cards were developed with: (a) the objective of ensuring accessibility of affordable and easy credit to the middle and low-income households in India and achieving financial inclusion; and (b) safeguards to account for systemic risks in transactions as … [Read more...] about Digital lenders seek 6-month extension, meeting with RBI, on PPI-based lending
