STOCKHOLM/LONDON – Rapid technological advances such as the ChatGPT generative artificial intelligence (AI) app are complicating efforts by European Union lawmakers to agree on landmark AI laws, sources with direct knowledge of the matter have told Reuters. The European Commission proposed the draft rules nearly two years ago in a bid to protect citizens from the dangers of the emerging technology, which has experienced a boom in investment and consumer popularity in recent months. The draft needs to be thrashed out between EU countries and EU lawmakers, called a trilogue, before the rules can become law. Several lawmakers had expected to reach a consensus on the 108-page bill last month in a meeting in Strasbourg, France and proceed to a trilogue in the next few months. But a 5-hour meeting on Feb 13 resulted in no resolution and lawmakers are at loggerheads over various facets of the Act, according to three sources familiar with the discussions. Asylum Rule Faces Immigration Questions On Logic And Legality
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Department of Homeland Security’s proposed asylum rule likely will need to overcome design flaws and legal problems to achieve its goals. The rule may violate U.S. immigration law and relies on policies providing lawful paths of entry that might not be available in the future. As a result, the rule may fail in its objective to reduce illegal entry and could lead to fewer people receiving humanitarian protection. The rule could enable a future administration to end virtually all or most asylum applications at the Southwest border by allowing few or an insufficient number of appointments to be scheduled via the government’s mobile app. What Does The Asylum Rule Do? Under current law, to receive asylum, an “applicant must establish that race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion was or will be at least one central reason for persecuting the applicant.” The proposed … [Read more...] about Asylum Rule Faces Immigration Questions On Logic And Legality
Cleveland Guardians Have An Ideal Roster For New Major League Baseball Rules
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As currently structured, the roster of the Cleveland Guardians has efficient, effective contact hitters with plenty of speed. Last year, the young Guardians showed the ability to get on base, get in scoring position, and score. Given the new rules introduced this year for Major League Baseball, “get em on, get em over, and get em in” makes great sense. It’s a plan that will likely work for Cleveland. Several rules changes introduced this spring training have already illustrated quicker games, much better flow and pace of games, and more action on the bases. Pitch Clock and the Guardians: Under Major League Baseball rules, pitchers have 15 seconds between each pitch to release the ball to the plate. With a runner or runners on base, the time changes to 20 seconds. Pitchers may disengage from the pitching rubber twice. If they throw over to first base in an attempt to pick off the runner a third time, they … [Read more...] about Cleveland Guardians Have An Ideal Roster For New Major League Baseball Rules

Some of the world’s top professional golfers slammed plans by golf’s ruling bodies to impose restrictions on the distance that golf balls can travel during elite tournaments. US PGA champion Justin Thomas and former US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau both publically voiced opposition to the move proposed by the R&A, and the United States Golf Association USGA) . The plans have also been met with criticism from Titleist , a leading manufacturer of golf balls. The governing bodies of golf are proposing the use of a “tournament ball” for professional and elite amateur competitions, which would not travel as far as the current balls used in the game. The rationale behind this proposal is to address concerns that the increasing distance that golf balls can travel is making some courses obsolete, and that this is threatening the integrity and viability of the sport. However, many players and industry insiders are not convinced that this is the right approach. Thomas … [Read more...] about Golf’s ruling bodies clash with pros over plans to reduce golf ball distance

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Wednesday she is not considering any new “blanket” insurance to back up all U.S. bank deposits beyond the current $250,000-per-account limit, even though the federal government let Silicon Valley Bank depositors recover all their money after its collapse earlier this month and Yellen suggested Tuesday regulators might take similar action in the future. Key Facts Yellen claimed at a Senate appropriations subcommittee hearing she has “not considered or discussed anything having to do with blanket insurance or guarantees of deposits.” The comments strike a different tone from remarks she gave to the American Bankers Association on Tuesday, where she said lifting the $250,000 cap for SVB customers “was necessary to protect the broader US banking system,” adding, “similar actions could be warranted if smaller institutions suffer deposit runs.” Bloomberg also … [Read more...] about Yellen Rules Out ‘Blanket Protections’ For All Bank Deposits After Protecting SVB Customers
