Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The bourbon revival continues to gather steam with literally hundreds of new expressions being released every year. The sector has been growing exponentially over the last decade. Every state now has craft distillers producing bourbon. More importantly, we are beginning to see, in states like Texas and Colorado, the emergence of a distinct regional style of bourbon. In the meantime, inspired in part by the proliferation of craft distillers and their innovative mash bills, distillation techniques and maturation protocols, many of the larger established and historic distillers have also embarked on a new cycle of experimentation and innovation. We are truly at the beginning of what will be the golden age of American whiskey. This year the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) judged hundreds of bourbon expressions across a range of different categories. Below are some notes on the finalists in each of the … [Read more...] about The Best Bourbons In America: 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition

The Good Girls: Sonia Faleiro’s chilling chronicle of the 2014 hanging of two teens in Uttar Pradesh
London-based author Sonia Faleiro’s latest book The Good Girls: An Ordinary Killing (Penguin Hamish Hamilton, ₹599) is the tragic, real-life story of two village girls, who, in the summer of 2014, were found hanging from a tree in the Katra Sadatganj village in the Badaun district of western Uttar Pradesh. After several conflicting eyewitness interrogations, post-mortem examinations and CBI inquiries, the authorities concluded that the girls had taken their own lives—they were afraid that being found with a boy would bring dishonour to them and their families. Several people questioned this verdict. Padma (16) and Lalli (14)—whose names have been changed in accordance with Indian law—were inseparable. Cousins and best friends, “people called them Padma Lalli, like they were one person.” One evening, the girls were given permission to attend a village fair—presumably the best day of their lives—after which they returned home. When they went to relieve themselves in the … [Read more...] about The Good Girls: Sonia Faleiro’s chilling chronicle of the 2014 hanging of two teens in Uttar Pradesh

This Is What It’s Like To Order A One-Of-Three Rolls-Royce Boat Tail
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Earlier this month, in the grounds of the Mandarin Oriental hotel on the picturesque shores of Lake Como in northern Italy, Rolls-Royce revealed its second Boat Tail. Finished in a chameleon-esque paintwork that shifts from near-white to deep bronze depending on how the sun hits it, this is the second of only three to ever exist. Commissioned by a Rolls-Royce client who has worked closely with the company for four years, the car shares its platform and overall look with the first Boat Tail, revealed in 2021, but is otherwise a total one-off – right down to the rose gold cutlery and carbon fiber folding stools that form its al fresco dining set. The car is inspired both by racing yachts of the early 20th century and the Rolls-Royce Phantom II Boattail from 1932, which one contemporary Boat Tail customer also owns. This particular example was commissioned by a loyal Rolls-Royce customer based in the Middle East, and whose … [Read more...] about This Is What It’s Like To Order A One-Of-Three Rolls-Royce Boat Tail
The Collison Brothers Built Stripe Into A $95 Billion Unicorn With Eye-Popping Financials. Inside Their Plan To Stay On Top
Billionaire brothers John and Patrick Collison built Stripe into one of the world’s most-hyped, highest valued — and profitable! — startups, worth some $95 billion. Now they must stave off going from disruptor to disrupted. I t’s just before five o’clock, and Stripe Cofounder John Collison is preparing to address his hundreds of Ireland-based employees on the top floor of his headquarters in Dublin’s “Silicon Docks” District. Such regular Friday town halls, which are also simulcast to New York, San Francisco, Singapore and anywhere else its 7,000 employees want to tune in from over Zoom, are an almost sacred tradition at Stripe, the payments company that Collison cofounded with big brother Patrick in 2010. With Patrick away getting married, it’s up to John, 31 and with a dusting of gray hair now topping his boyish face, to field questions. It could get contentious: There’s a social media “kerfuffle” playing out over Twitter this week: Stripe has been accused in a … [Read more...] about The Collison Brothers Built Stripe Into A $95 Billion Unicorn With Eye-Popping Financials. The iPod and my musical education
Without the iPod, we may have never known the iPhone. And yet, it was the iPhone that absorbed the iPod whole and relegated it to the category of tech you would maybe only want, never again strictly need. (Representational image: Insung Yoon via Unsplash) Back in 2006, I was given my first iPod: The first-gen iPod Nano. It was my father’s gentle way of creating a diversion from my blinkers-on desire for a Moto Razr that all us college kids were hopelessly infatuated with. And it worked. Like millions, the iPod was my first brush with an Apple device - this was the third iteration of the iPod, after iPod Classic and the iPod Mini - and I was instantly enamoured. Unboxing was not a thing back then, nor was ASMR – but ripping that plastic off this black box was deeply satisfying. The click wheel! The tiny colour display! The possibility of carrying 500 songs (mine was the budget 2GB version) and photos everywhere! All in a device so slim and tiny it fits into that little pocket … [Read more...] about The iPod and my musical education
Teenage Mental Health Grades Are Failing. What Should Be Done?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A new study published in The Journal of Psychology adds another data point to a disquieting trend in clinical psychology: teenage mental health is plummeting and social media is a major contributing factor. The researchers, led by María Dolores Sánchez-Hernandez of the University of Granada in Spain, found that teenagers’ moment-to-moment emotional state was directly linked to the number of likes they received on an Instagram post. Moreover, teenagers who tended to engage in social comparison were particularly affected by the number of likes they received on their posts, as were older teenagers (ages 15-18). “Peer support and acceptance is a major concern during middle and late adolescence,” says Sánchez-Hernandez. “Therefore, adolescents in this stage may engage to a greater extent in ‘social surveillance’ and approval-seeking based on the content posted on Instagram.” This study comes on the heels of recent … [Read more...] about Teenage Mental Health Grades Are Failing. “The will to stop crimes against women is simply missing”: Sonia Faleiro
'The Good Girls: An Ordinary Killing' by Sonia Faleiro (right) was on the RSL Ondaatje Prize 2022 longlist and the prestigious Crime Writers’ Association’s ALCS Gold Dagger for Nonfiction 2022 longlist. (Image collage courtesy eShe magazine) They were 16 and 14 years old. Two individuals, but one for the villagers in Katra Sadatganj: Padma-Lalli (names changed). Midnight of 26 May 2014, they disappeared, and the next morning their bodies were found hanging from a mango grove. The horrific photograph that revealed Padma and Lalli hanging from the tree was circulated on social media. It elicited the same panic that had engulfed the country when it witnessed the rape and murder of a 23-year-old medical student in Delhi two years ago. For the opinionated, Katra Sadatganj was an open-and-shut case. Sensationalism and misreporting followed. In this haze, London-based investigative journalist Sonia Faleiro decided to visit the village for something that she was already working on, but … [Read more...] about “The will to stop crimes against women is simply missing”: Sonia Faleiro
Why we need ’emotional diversity’ at work right now
Emotions are energy in motion. Without them, we wouldn’t feel compelled to act, create, or move an inch. This is why they are so vital, not just in our personal lives, but also in the workplace. A company’s formal organizational structure is always invisibly overlaid with an informal network of relationships fueled by emotions. advertisement advertisement Studies show us that emotions impact how we perform, lead, make decisions, innovate, and commit to our organizations. Recent research from Wharton management professor Michael Parke indicates that expressing emotions in the workplace among teams results in their enhanced ability to solve problems and generate ideas. Toxic positivity is forcing us to fake it And yet, showing emotions at work, especially the more complicated ones, still seems inconceivable for many managers. Some fear losing face or authority, while others think they’ll be perceived as soft or weak. For many of us, … [Read more...] about Why we need ’emotional diversity’ at work right now
