Francisco Lindor And Gleyber Torres Illustrate Significance Of World Baseball Classic

March 22, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The World Baseball Classic ended with a dramatic Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani confrontation Tuesday that seemed like a perfect ending regardless of the outcome. It resulted in Ohtani striking out Trout to give Japan the title and capped a stretch of a few weeks that saw various debates about the value of playing such an event in the midst of spring training. The debate intensified last week when Mets’ closer Edwin Diaz injured his knee in a celebration of Puerto Rico’s 5-2 win over Dominican Republic. Diaz wound up with a season-ending injury and a few days Jose Altuve broke his thumb and will be out two months. The Yankee presence at the event was minimal as they opted not to let Luis Severino pitch for the Dominican Republic citing his recent injury and an early hamstring injury prevented Nestor Cortes from suiting up for the United States. Without two prominent pitchers taking part, the Yankee contingent … [Read more...] about Francisco Lindor And Gleyber Torres Illustrate Significance Of World Baseball Classic

2023 World Baseball Classic Was A Triumph As Improvements Begin With Timing

March 22, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The 2023 World Baseball Classic was a resounding success as evident in attendance, viewership, and merchandise sales. It also didn’t hurt to have the United States and Japan battle to the bitter end in an epic championship ball game. No one will ever forget how Shohei Ohtani struck out Mike Trout with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to solidify Japan’s 3-2 victory and the country’s third World Baseball Classic championship and first since 2009. Regardless of the highly competitive ball games and ebullient crowds in Miami, Phoenix, Taichung, and Tokyo, critics still found fault with the timing of the two week tournament, its overall relevance, and injuries to perennial all-stars. Credence can be given to arguments regarding why the World Baseball Classic occurs in March during the middle of spring training. However, it can no longer be viewed as a meaningless tournament as evident in the effusive praise and … [Read more...] about 2023 World Baseball Classic Was A Triumph As Improvements Begin With Timing

After World Baseball Classic, Miami Airport Dreams Of Nonstop To Tokyo

March 22, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Japan national baseball team got a dreamlike win in the World Baseball Classic final game on Tuesday. The WBC also gave Miami International Airport new hope for an old dream. The baseball tournament enabled the first ever nonstop flight to Tokyo, something the airport has long sought. A 13-hour charter flight by Japan Airlines on a Boeing 787 arrived just before 3 a.m. on March 17. It carried more than 100 passengers, including players and staff from the eventual WBC 2023 championship team. That plane departed Miami the following day. On Monday, JAL flew a 787 into Miami, ready to depart whenever the team’s run ended. The Dreamliner departed Wednesday after Japan won the championship game on Tuesday. “It was wonderful to welcome our first nonstop flight from Japan to Miami-Dade County, and to see the Japan Airlines aircraft parked at MIA, basking in the Miami sunshine,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor, Daniella … [Read more...] about After World Baseball Classic, Miami Airport Dreams Of Nonstop To Tokyo

Mets option top prospect Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse to start season

March 22, 2023 by www.denverpost.com

PORT ST. LUCIE — Francisco Alvarez will start the season in Syracuse. The Mets optioned their top overall prospect to Triple-A on Wednesday morning as well as sent catcher Nick Meyer to minor league camp. Brett Baty, the club’s second-ranked prospect, remains in Major League camp to compete for a spot on the Mets’ Opening Day roster. The 21-year-old catcher showed flashes of the power tool he has long been known for but he didn’t exactly put up monster numbers in Grapefruit League play, going 3-for-28 (.107) with two walks, one RBI and 10 strikeouts. He hit no home runs. After undergoing surgery on his right ankle in October, Alvarez was worked into Grapefruit League games somewhat slowly, but playing time behind the plate opened up for him when Omar Narvaez left for the World Baseball Classic. Now that Narvaez is back in camp, the Mets want him to catch their regulars for the rest of the week. There was some offseason speculation that Alvarez would be used as a DH this … [Read more...] about Mets option top prospect Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse to start season

Remember Neopets? This Hong Kong Company Is Trying To Revitalize The Nostalgic Game With Web3 Technology

March 22, 2023 by www.forbes.com

The heyday of Neopets has long gone. But Dominic Law, CEO of Neopets Meta, thinks the two decades-old virtual pet game has all the right ingredients to become a Web3 title. From a base in Hong Kong, Law is building a blockchain-based 3D virtual world for these fantasy creatures, even as the future of Web3 gaming is blurred amid a crypto winter. L ike tens of millions of preteens who got on the internet for the first time in the early 2000s, Dominic Law used to spend his free time on Neopets.com . He spent hours feeding jellies to his dragon-like digital pet (called a Shoyru, the most popular Neopet species), earning virtual currencies by playing mini-games like Extreme Potato Counter and exploring the website’s vast online world where a giant dinosaur egg omelet exists. Within a few years, however, Law’s virtual pets, like millions of others, were forgotten as he got busy with school exams. After more than two decades later, Law, who is now 35 years old, got … [Read more...] about Remember Neopets? This Hong Kong Company Is Trying To Revitalize The Nostalgic Game With Web3 Technology
