The time between getting the admission offer and joining a foreign university provides a unique window to hone new skills, learn about socio-cultural fitments, pick up a language, and master part-time work laws to fit into the new destination well. Pawan Adhikari, founder of international education consultancy start-up, DP Cube Learning, tells Moneycontrol about five key areas students must work on before joining a campus overseas to make their stay at the study destination smooth. 1. Breaking the language barrier : If you are going to an English-speaking country, try to learn the local pronunciations. Watching videos is a good way to get a hang of the way English is spoken there. As an example, even within the UK, spoken English will vary depending on where you are – Ireland, Scotland and Welsh, for example, have very different accents. If you are travelling to a destination where English is the second language, make an effort to familiarise yourself with the native … [Read more...] about Study abroad: Five things to remember before joining a foreign university

The Edge | Knight Frank Kuala lumpur and selangor office Monitor (1Q2022): Downward pressure on rental, occupancy rates to continue
This article first appeared in City & Country, The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on June 20, 2022 - June 26, 2022. - A + A The rental and occupancy levels of office space in KL city are anticipated to see downward pressure, as a result of substantial incoming supply and low occupancy in office buildings this year. The occupancy level in KL fringe, however, is expected to remain relatively stable, driven by a wider pool of tenants/occupiers and high-quality decentralised offices, particularly in areas with ease of accessibility and adequate transport links. Meanwhile, the Selangor office market will remain resilient with more leasing activities expected, especially for buildings with Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) status and Grade A buildings, says Knight Frank Malaysia executive director of corporate services Teh Young Khean in presenting The Edge /Knight Frank Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Office Monitor 1Q2022. With 60 independent hotels currently under management (and another 40 expected before year’s end), as well as five Life House-branded hotels welcoming guests (and another two slated to open in 2022), the company is harnessing travel’s triumphant return to drive its ambitious agenda. I recently spoke with Zeidan to learn more about what makes Life House tick, and what the future holds for the company post-pandemic. His responses have been edited for length and clarity. Q: How would you explain Life House and its mission to someone who knows nothing about technology? A: Life House’s mission is to make travel more accessible and reliable for all types of travelers. However, because hotels are pieces of commercial real estate owned by investors seeking a financial return, we focus on owner issues (i.e., profitability) rather than … [Read more...] about This CEO Won’t Stop Until He Reinvents The Hotel Management Business Worldwide

Thailand News Today | Govt officials slammed for wasting tax money
Government officials have been slammed by the public for wasting taxpayer money. Thai netizens have slammed government officials in the central province of Pathum Thani for wasting taxes on a pointless trip to Phang Nga and Phuket. Government officials from the Mueng ท่าโขลง District were supposed to be taking part in a working seminar to develop women’s potential in Phang Nga, and Phuket, from June 23 – 26. But the non-profit organisation, Anti-Corruption of Thailand, criticised the government on its Facebook page, saying they used the 490,000 baht trip as a holiday. The pictures posted on the non-profit organisation’s Facebook page were taken from the Facebook accounts of the seminar participants. The picture captions were cutting. One said, “Others might go to the sea to escape from love and hot weather, but we escape from work.” Another said, “Go to Phuket! Thanks to the kind sponsors,” and another, “Wonderful activities for ท่าโขลง women.” The pictures reveal … [Read more...] about Thailand News Today | Govt officials slammed for wasting tax money

Inside Didi’s US$60b crash that changed China tech forever
- A + A (June 30): It was an unusually frigid December weekend when Cheng Wei summoned his inner circle to his Beijing office. The founder of Didi Global Inc, dressed entirely in black, told his lieutenants to slash spending by a fifth in 2022 and begin layoffs after staff return from Lunar New Year vacations. He delivered his bombshell flanked by a giant Powerpoint slide that read: “Don’t live with illusions. Face reality.” “We had a tough year,” said the reserved billionaire known as Will, who that day seemed even gloomier than normal, according to people briefed on the gathering. “But next year will be even tougher.” That sombre gathering encapsulated what many in the room already suspected — the ride-hailing champion once feted for running Uber Technologies Inc out of China was no more. In its place was a defeated shell worth a fifth of its value at the peak, bleeding users, blocked from raising funds for cherished projects — and whose executives were constantly … [Read more...] about Inside Didi’s US$60b crash that changed China tech forever

However, in Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index slipped 0.62% to 21,859.79 points at the close, while Chinese H-shares listed in Hong Kong edged down 0.36% to 7,666.88 points. China's central bank needs to keep cuts to interest rates and banks' reserve requirement ratio among its policy options while waiting for … [Read more...] about China stocks log best month in two years on recovery hopes, easing Covid-19 curbs
How to Do What You Love for a Living
Regular readers of this column know that I almost never write about my personal life. I figure this column isn't about me; it's about making readers more successful. However, my editor asked me to write about what made me passionate about my job, so here goes. I'm going to explain how my passion for writing led me to this, my dream job, and how the years I spent avoiding my dream job turned out to be essential to achieving it. I'll start with some background. I always knew I was supposed to be a writer. I wrote (dictated) my first story when I was four. By age eight, I was creating hand-drawn newspapers with stories about dinosaurs. At age 14, I bought my own printing press and began publishing my own newsletter. By high school, I was writing nonfiction at a college level (e.g., 35 pages of "Analysis of Marijuana Usage in Contemporary California") and writing almost readable pastiches of Kafka and Lovecraft. Whilst in college, I had my first short story … [Read more...] about How to Do What You Love for a Living
