Each week leading up to the 2019 NFL draft, our draft expert Eric Edholm will be breaking down a position of need for the Denver Broncos along with the top prospects at those positions – their strengths, weaknesses, draft range and how they might fit in with the Broncos. Today, we start with the quarterbacks. The Broncos have two quarterbacks on their roster – Garrett Grayson and Joe Flacco. The team’s trade for Flacco just became official Wednesday, but the agreement has been in place almost a month now. Asked how Flacco might fit in with his new team after coming over from the Baltimore Ravens, Broncos president of football operations/general manager John Elway praised his new starter’s arm strength, winning track record and high usage under center. To that last point, Elway said that Flacco fits the system that the team plans to run offensively under new coordinator Rich Scangarello. That last part is important to consider for whatever quarterback the Broncos … [Read more...] about 5 quarterbacks the Broncos should consider in the NFL draft — and how they would work in Denver

Carlos Monarrez Detroit Free Press Published 7:00 AM EST Feb 25, 2019 Big dudes running the 40-yard dash in underwear! Little dudes trying to bench press the bejesus out of 225 pounds! And, of course, kickers and punters trying to do anything! Yes, it’s finally here. The NFL scouting combine kicks off Tuesday in Indianapolis, when we get to see the future generation of stars take part in the closest thing sports has to a livestock auction. At this point, is there really much need for the combine? With so many other tools available to NFL teams like pro days and private workouts and official player visits, not to mention each team’s massive scouting department and the ability to watch game film from every snap of every player’s career, I'm starting to think NFL teams need a centralized operation to guide their judgment. When was the last time you heard a team say, “We weren’t going to draft this guy. But man, he was off the charts in the … [Read more...] about 2019 NFL combine predictions: How tall is Kyler Murray?
Cork Gaines, provided by Published 11:32 am CST, Sunday, February 3, 2019 Al Bello/Getty Tom Brady was the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft and is now considered the greatest quarterback to play the game. The pick is viewed as lucky by many, but Bill Belichick had targeted Brady and likely would have taken him much sooner if not for the mess he inherited as head coach. The one thing the New England Patriots did not need in 2000 was another quarterback, but at some point, they could no longer pass on the talent and the value. In 2000, the New England Patriots were a mess. The Pats lost six of their final eight games during the 1999 season and fired head coach Pete Carroll. Bill Belichick was hired, and the team made the biggest steal in NFL Draft history: selecting Tom Brady in the sixth round. Snagging Brady late in the draft, was a move that would win the franchise nine AFC titles and five Super Bowls in the next 19 seasons. A decade and a half later, the Patriots are … [Read more...] about Tom Brady was the biggest steal in NFL Draft history, but there was more to it than just luck
Kirkland Crawford Detroit Free Press Published 12:58 PM EST Jan 17, 2019 As we march closer to the Super Bowl, the focus for many other NFL fans has shifted to the 2019 NFL draft. On Thursday, the preeminent NFL draftnik has published a first-round mock. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has predicted each of the 32 picks scheduled for April 25 in Nashville, Tenn. The Detroit Lions have the eighth overall pick. According to Kiper, they should go with defense, namely LSU linebacker Devin White. "White is a fly-to-the-football linebacker with similar athletic traits as Detroit middle linebacker Jarrad Davis, who was taken in the first round in 2017. The two could form a stellar tandem, as both are three-down linebackers. White isn't a true pass-rusher, but he makes plays in the backfield," Kiper wrote. White, entering the NFL draft after his junior season, had 123 tackles, 62 solo, three sacks and three forced fumbles in 2018. Kiper has Michigan defensive lineman Rashan Gary going with … [Read more...] about NFL draft: Mel Kiper says Detroit Lions take LB Devin White
Marlowe Alter Detroit Free Press Published 7:20 PM EDT Oct 2, 2018 If the 2018 season ended after four weeks — and some Detroit Lions fans may wish it did — the Lions would pick second overall in the 2019 NFL draft April 25. The last time the franchise picked second was in 2010, when it selected Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. The Lions also picked second in 2007 (Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson) and 2003 (Michigan State receiver Charles Rogers). As a reminder, the NFL draft order is determined by record, using strength of schedule as a tiebreaker. Teams 21-32 make the playoffs, so the order for playoff teams is determined by the results of postseason play. Of course, there are 12 games left in this season, so a lot will change.
