In 2017, a reporter asked Theo Epstein about potentially transitioning from being a baseball president to an NFL general manager. The question was prompted by an MLB front-office executive, Paul DePodesta, who switched sports to take over as chief strategy officer for the Cleveland Browns. Epstein demurred. “I know how long you have to be around the game of baseball before you can develop the right kind of instincts and intuition,” the former Red Sox GM and current Chicago Cubs president replied. “I wouldn’t presume to be able to do that in another sport. I think that would take 10 years to get up to speed.” It seems DePodesta is ahead of schedule. Since his hiring in January of 2016, the Browns have seen a dive to rock-bottom — a 1-31 record over the 2016 and 2017 seasons — followed by a resurgence led by rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield. Mayfield set the first-year mark for touchdown passes (27) in the Browns best season since 2007. Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 7:30 AM EDT Mar 13, 2019 All those deals you’ve heard about for the last 48 hours, the wild trades – Odell Beckham Jr. is a Cleveland Brown! – and oversized contracts, can start to become official at 4 p.m. today. That’s when the NFL’s 2019 league year opens, and that’s when the Lions will undoubtedly be crowned by one person or another as Offseason Winners. Not that that means anything, of course, but the Lions have made two deals official in the last two days, signing wide receiver Danny Amendola and running back Zach Zenner to one-year deals. They could consummate those contracts because Amendola already was a free agent, having been released by the Miami Dolphins last week, and Zenner still was under contract from last season. They’ve also released Nevin Lawson and Trevor Bates, and have 14 players currently on their roster scheduled to become unrestricted free agents at the stroke of … [Read more...] about What to expect from Detroit Lions as NFL free agency opens

Associated Press Published 12:24 PM EST Dec 31, 2018 Miami — Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase has been fired and executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum has been demoted after the team missed the playoffs for the 15th time in 17 years. General manager Chris Grier, who has been with the team in various capacities for 19 seasons, was given more authority and will oversee football operations while reporting directly to owner Stephen Ross. The team said it will immediately conduct a search for a new coach who will report to Grier. Ross made the moves Monday following a 7-9 season. Gase, 40, who attended Marshall High School and Michigan State, went 23-26 with the Dolphins, and a 42-17 loss Sunday at Buffalo sealed his fate. Tannenbaum, who held his job for four years and was involved with several disappointing drafts, was reassigned within the organization. After beating New England on the play of the season — a pass and double lateral for a … [Read more...] about Eight NFL teams without a coach; Dolphins fire MSU alum Adam Gase
