Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has also voiced her concern and assigned Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung to take charge of security in the capital. However, the National Police chief and national security agencies said the imposition of the Internal Security Act (ISA) to cope with possible violence was not necessary and there was nothing to worry about. PHUKET MEDIA WATCH – World news selected by Gazette editors for Phuket’s international community Deutsche Bank to cut 1,900 jobs after profits drop 46 percent Phuket Gazette / News Wires PHUKET: Deutsche Bank said yesterday that it plans to cut 1,900 jobs, most of them at its investment bank, as part of an effort to save approximately 3 billion euros ($3.69 billion). The German bank, which employs more than 100,000 people in more than 70 countries, said its profit had dropped to 650 million euros ($800 million) in the second quarter of this year. This was a drop of 46 percent when compared to the same period last year, when the figure was about 1.2 billion euros ($1.47 billion). After reporting the results, the bank said it had identified measures to slash costs by approximately 3 billion euros ($3.69 billion). PHUKET: Police are keeping a close eye out for gambling during the World Cup, and yesterday nabbed one suspect and five computers in a raid in Patong. “We were notified by an undercover officer of an illegal online gambling den in a retail shop on Soi Paradise,” Lt Col Sutthichai Thianpho of the Patong Police told the Phuket Gazette . “We raided the shop and found computers set up for gambling in the back room.” The shop owner, known only as “Mr Lee”, and gamblers fled the scene when police arrived, said Col Sutthichai, but officers were able to capture an employee, 47-year-old Lae Choomjit. The US has surpassed the 6 million mark for the total number of Covid-19 cases. Brazil (3.7 million) and India (3.3 million) are the countries with the 2nd and 3rd highest number of cases. Around the world there is now a total of 24,331,524 Covid-19 cases, 829,664 deaths with 16,872,542 recorded as ‘recovered’. Of note, both the trend in new cases and deaths is dropping again, gradually.
