New Maps Limit Minority Voting Power
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For nearly two decades, U.S. Representative George Kenneth Butterfield has faithfully served the residents and citizens of North Carolina’s 1st District. When he announced his retirement in November 2020, Rep. Butterfield and his constituents became the first victims of partisan redistricting or, the more stark term, gerrymandering. "Every ten years, the North Carolina legislature enacts a new congressional map," said Rep. Butterfield, chairman of the House Administration Subcommittee on Elections, in a video announcing his retirement. "The map that was recently enacted by the legislature is a partisan map. It is racially gerrymandered and it will disadvantage African-American communities all across the first congressional district." The Brennan Center for Justice defines gerrymandering as the intentional manipulation of district (state, local or federal) boundaries to discriminate against a group of voters based on their … [Read more...] about New Maps Limit Minority Voting Power
Pakistan’s new foreign minister seeks to broaden U.S. ties
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Pakistan's new Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Thursday he would like to pivot away from single-issue transactional relationship with the United States as he seeks to repair frayed ties with Washington. "Our relationship with the United States has been colored too much by the geopolitical context in our region, and particularly by the events and circumstances in Afghanistan," Bhutto-Zardari told reporters at the United Nations during his first visit to the United States as foreign minister. "We would like to pivot away from a transactory relationship, a one point agenda relationship, to a more broad-based relationship with a particular emphasis on trade," he said a day after meeting U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appointed Bhutto-Zardari, son of assassinated former premier Benazir Bhutto, three weeks ago. Sharif took over last month after Imran Khan lost a confidence vote moved by a … [Read more...] about Pakistan’s new foreign minister seeks to broaden U.S. ties
What’s New In Additive Manufacturing?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Bill King, PhD, Co-founder and Chief Scientist at Fast Radius . Over the past decade, 3-D printing has transformed from a hobbyist or prototyping tool into an industrial-grade production process, referred to as additive manufacturing. Today, additively manufactured parts are everywhere—from visually appealing consumer goods to the inner workings of automobiles and jet engines. Yet, many engineers and product designers who work closely with other manufacturing methods are still learning about additive technologies and how to sort out today’s very real opportunities from yesterday’s significant limitations. Until recently, many additive manufacturing technologies couldn't produce end-use parts. But now, the additive manufacturing industry has developed new materials, techniques and technologies to become a true competitor to more traditional manufacturing processes like injection molding and CNC machining. Still, … [Read more...] about What’s New In Additive Manufacturing?
US university charges on with ‘power suit’ as a new battery for electric cars, spacecraft
ORLANDO, Florida: University of Central Florida scientists are charging on with an experimental battery capable of reinventing how automobiles and spacecraft are made. By reworking the idea of energy sources, a UCF research group is creating a lightweight battery that would double as the outer shell of a vehicle in what the group is calling its “power suit” project. Led by UCF College of Engineering Professor Jayan Thomas, the group plans to accomplish this with nanotechnology – supercapacitor composite material involving graphene arranged over carbon fiber in a fan-like structure, Thomas said. “The advantage is its lightweight, and can increase the mileage because you’re reducing the weight of the car and in addition to that, you can store energy like your battery in the same composites,” said Thomas, who conducts his research at UCF’s NanoScience Technology Center. While reducing weight, the suit is thought to increase an electric car’s range by 25% to 30%; equating to about … [Read more...] about US university charges on with ‘power suit’ as a new battery for electric cars, spacecraft
New app urges people to report shark sightings in US
As great white sharks start to arrive along the Cape ahead of the summer, a new program will be urging people to report any white shark sightings off the Massachusetts coast. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy and the New England Aquarium on May 17 announced that they’re partnering on an initiative that encourages residents and visitors to report shark sightings off Cape Cod through the Conservancy’s Sharktivity app. The Conservancy is contracting the Aquarium to employ a local citizen science coordinator who’s responsible for verifying shark sighting reports made by the public through Sharktivity – and documenting accounts of shark-seal interactions or other predatory behaviour. The coordinator – Massachusetts-based shark expert John Chisholm, who is with the New England Aquarium and who has been tracking shark sightings for many years – will also submit white shark photos and videos from the public for the Conservancy’s White Shark Logbook. “This is really something I’ve … [Read more...] about New app urges people to report shark sightings in US
Are Russia’s New Drone Killing Lasers Effective Weapons or A Sign of Desperation?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov claimed Wednesday that Russian forces in Ukraine used a new laser to destroy a Ukrainian drone. What may be a new capability may also reflect Russian forces’ crucial shortages of anti-air missiles and desire for any good news in a stalled campaign. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy quickly took to the media, comparing Russia’s laser counter unmanned aircraft system (CUAS) hype to the “wonder weapons” that Nazi Germany unveiled in the closing days of WWII as Allied and Soviet forces converged on Germany from West and East. That’s an exaggeration Hudson Institute Senior Fellow, Bryan Clark, says. “I think he’s overstating it when he says this is desperation. I think the Russians are doing what they’ve done in Syria and Ukraine for years. They’ve taken systems to the battlefield as a way of demonstrating or experimenting with them. I think this is what they’re doing, trying a … [Read more...] about Are Russia’s New Drone Killing Lasers Effective Weapons or A Sign of Desperation?
